Michelin New York City (Michelin Green Guide New York City) ReviewI purchased the Michelin Green Guuide New York City after borrowing it from the library several times. It was a worthwhile purchase, if only for the subway map. It gives a tourist all the information he/she needs to plan a trip to NYC, how to chose places to see, subway information and restaurant suggestions in the area of the attraction. The other plus about this guide is the shape, which fits into the pocket of cargo shorts or into a tote bag.Michelin New York City (Michelin Green Guide New York City) OverviewThe long-standing Michelin Travel Guides are an ideal travel companion for travelers who really want to connect with the world. Get to know the local way of life through detailed background information on the country, people, and culture. Quickly identify the best places to visit using Michelin's star rating system. The best sites are highlighted on the sites map or you can follow a pre-planned driving tour. With the Michelin Travel Guide to New York City, explore the Statue of Liberty, ride the subway to jazz at Lincoln Center, step outside the USA to mingle with the 192 member states of the United Nations, hobnob with polar bears at the Bronx Zoo or enjoy medieval sculpture at The Cloisters.

Time Out Lisbon (Time Out Guides) ReviewTime Out city guidebooks are typically pretty good, and this one is certainly no exception. It provides an excellent list of restaurants and hotels, as well as plenty of useful information about museums, the aquarium, as well as various shops. If you're headed to Lisbon, pick up this book.
One other tip: taxis in Lisbon are inexpensive and useful, but from the airport they try to take advantage. We were charged 25 euro for a ten minute ride. Why not take the airport bus right from the terminal, for 3 euro, or even the city bus for half of that?Time Out Lisbon (Time Out Guides) OverviewRising on seven hills overlooking the River Tejo and dotted with monuments testifying to Portugal's former maritime glory, Lisbon is a sightseeing delight and a partier's mecca. Written by locals, this award-winning guide profiles the coffeehouses of the Chiado, the bars and restaurants of the Bairro Alto, the clubs of the Docas and Santa Apolónia, down into the city's deepest African and Brazilian dives and out to the finest beaches of the Caparica Coast. Special sections cover gay and lesbian life, sports and fitness, children's activities, and more. This edition features new sidebars and chapter introductions, a new culture chapter, and rechecked listings.

Lonely Planet California (Regional Guide) ReviewI'm a Californian, and know several cities reviewed by this guide very well. While I love Lonely Planet guides, I cannot recommend this book after spending an hour looking through it one day at a Borders. (We were headed so San Francisco and I needed a good CA guidebook.)
I live in San Diego and so - as a test case - I graded the book on its coverage of San Diego. I gave it a "D" because every time I checked what it had to say about a location/restaurant I knew, this book got it wrong or missed the fine points. An example? One of the finest restaurants in La Jolla (or all of San Diego, for that matter) is George's at the Cove, but dinner entrees start at $30. Restaurant-savvy Sandiegans know this pricey restaurant has an upstairs open-air sister restaurant, Ocean Terrace Café, with a fabulous view of the bay - and offers a chance to sample a limited selection of George's entrees, at - relatively reasonable - prices ($14 to $20 for dinner entrée). LP Californian seemed to always miss helpful little tips like that, and Frommer's seemed to include many of them. Now maybe Lonely Planet California book has great coverage of all the other cities besides San Diego, who knows? If that's the case then my review is inaccurate. However, if their San Diego coverage is representative of the rest of the book, then I suggest don't buy it! We ended up buying Frommer's California 2006, which I'll give a lukewarm endorsement to because at least its coverage of CA cities I know was better than LP California. Of course, Frommer's guides are so dry and boring, lacking the character that LP guides sometimes have.
Lonely Planet California (Regional Guide) OverviewTempt vertigo on the hills of San Francisco and rub elbows with a star in an LA boutique. Sample syrahs in the Wine Country, cruise cliff-hugging Hwy 1 or hike in the heat of Death Valley. Whether you're a city slicker, road tripper or adrenaline junkie, grab this in-depth, cheeky guide and let our local authors steer you to the treasures of the Golden State.Plot Your Route - 120 detailed maps and seven handy itineraries help you navigate and plan your adventure.Take It Outside - surfing Steamers Lane, climbing Half Dome, skiing Tahoe, diving San Diego: the scoop on the hottest California activities.Eat Your Heart Out - hundreds of restaurant reviews, from tasty taquerías to celebrity-chef bistros.Sleep Easy - the best places for California dreaming, from mountaintop campgrounds to oceanfront resorts.Cross The Border - expanded Las Vegas chapter shows you how to hit the jackpot in flirty, fabulous Sin City, plus tips on heading south to Mexico.

Fodor's Pacific Northwest, 16th Edition (Fodor's Gold Guides) ReviewWe used this book on a 10 day trip to Oregon and Washington and had a great experience. Any of the Fodor's recommendations we tried were excellent, including scenic highways to take, restaurants to try, and hotels to stay in on the coast. We had a great trip and much of it can be attributed to the excellent tips in this book. It's important to check costs of entry to different places before going, though, because the book can't stay updated with the changes these places make. We found a few places where prices have changed since it was published.Fodor's Pacific Northwest, 16th Edition (Fodor's Gold Guides) OverviewHike to thundering waterfalls near a volcano, climb slopes of gold and red on a drive through the cascades, wander around the largest Chinese garden outside China, browse the stalls of a bustling historic market, or educate your palate with delicious pinot noir and pinot blanc—Fodor's Pacific Northwest offers all these experiences and more! Our local writers have traveled throughout the area to find the best hotels, restaurants, attractions and activities to prepare you for a journey of stunning variety. Before you leave for your trip be sure to pack your Fodor's guide to ensure you don't miss a thing. The San Francisco Chronicle sums it up best —"Fodor's guides are saturated with information."- We frequently update our Pacific Northwest guide, and we make every effort to bring you the most accurate and thorough book. Plus we provide timely updates about the area to Fodors.com.- Unlike other travel books, Fodor's guides rely heavily on local experts who know the territory best—so you know you're seeing the real Pacific Northwest.- We give you the planning tools you need to tailor your trip. Frommer's Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call 2008 (Frommer's Cruises) ReviewThis is a very helpful guide for those taking an Alaska cruise; it helps you choose the right cruise for your objectives. It reviews the various landtours available but I particularly like the section in each port-of-call that suggests self-conducted tours with detailed maps, costs, and directions. For example, I will be taking a bus available near the pier to see Mendenhall Glacier (near Juneau); I can set my own departure/return time and save 70% of what the cruise ship company wanted to charge me for taking their (the same!) tour.Frommer's Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call 2008 (Frommer's Cruises) OverviewExperience the best a place has to offer on the cruise that's right for you. Frommer's. Your trip begins with us.
Exact prices, including brochure rates, with tips on how to find deep discounts, so you can plan the perfect trip no matter what your budget.
Extensive descriptions of all the major ships sailing in Alaska, with information on everything from cabins and ship facilities to shore excursions and recreational activities.
Comprehensive ship ratings that grade the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's programs, public areas, cleanliness, and overall enjoyment) from "poor" to "outstanding."
Complete coverage of the Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska, with off-the-beaten-path experiences and new takes on top attractions.
Bonus wildlife guide in the appendix highlights the animals you're most likely to see-from whales to bald eagles to bears.

The Voluntary Traveler: Adventures from the Road Best Traveled ReviewThere is a new and growing trend. Men and women leaving their homes for vacations that will take them to other lands and other peoples. Then instead of simply seeing the sights, they participate in directly helping those communities by volunteering their labor and expertise to accomplish whatever tasks are needed to elevate the standard of living and/or the quality of life for the people who reside there. In "The Voluntary Traveler: Adventures From The Road Best Traveled", Nola Lee Kelsey has compiled and edited the personal stories of more than twenty men and women who have engaged in traveling around the globe to become more than simple tourists, participating in helping, often through the focus of a charitable organization, those communities they have visited. As 'volunteer travelers', their personal service brought memories and feelings of accomplishment that ordinary tourists and recreational visitors could never know. From Thailand, India, South Africa, and the Marshall Islands, to Mexico, Romania, Nepal, and Cambodia, these are personal stories that illustrate and exemplify what volunteer travel is all about. Of special note is the final section profusely listing additional volunteer organizations, resources, opportunities, and more. For anyone seeking adventure beyond their own local communities and ordinary lives, reading "The Voluntary Traveler" can be the first step towards making a difference when and while journeying to anywhere else in the world. The Voluntary Traveler: Adventures from the Road Best Traveled OverviewPart anthology and part travel guide, this book opens new worlds through intriguing real-life stories by travelers who have walked the walk of volunteer travel. The collection also includes a detailed volunteer guidebook section, listing charities needing volunteer assistance and organizations coordinating service-oriented travel.

Rick Steves' Best of Europe 2007 ReviewI traveled through Europe last summer with the '97 edition of this book, and found it to be the best travel guide out there - and several jealous travelers, who either forgot, lost, or never knew about the book until they arrived in Europe, envied mine, echoing my sentiments.
Rick has a great philosophy towards travel: see the world through the "back door." He thinks a traveler can have a much richer travel experience if he meets and interacts with the locals, living as they do (or living with them, in quaint pensiones and B&Bs,) eating where they eat (or better yet, eating with the locals they meet along the way) and seeing the world with an open mind. I agree. This book lists some of these great (and budget-friendly) sleeping and eating establishments.
Better yet are Rick's 'what to see' recommendations. Like all the guidebooks out there, he gives a description of the top tourist sights. But what sets this book apart is two things not found in other travel books: Rick gives his opinions on each sight, and recommends many other lesser-known sights.
Rick isn't afraid to tell you if seeing or doing something is a waste of time; on the flip side, there are sights that he says you'd be crazy NOT to see. If my time was short in a city, I'd be sure to see Rick's "must-see" sights and skip the rest - I never felt as though I missed anything, and had a wonderful experience.
Secondly, Rick recommends lesser known, out-of-the-way (and not so out-of-the-way) places. It was in these places that I often got the best "feel" for what a country was truly like, as these were the places that locals frequented. I remember lying on a beach in Cinque Terre, Italy (one of Rick's favorite "back door" towns) talking with my travel companion. A Milanese man on the next beach towel over asked us how we found out about his favorite vacation spot - he'd never heard anyone speaking english there before! (Although we found the town to be full of Rick Steves followers!) We had a wonderful time there, met many locals, and truly experienced Italy.
This is a fantastic guide book - friendly budget hotels, yummy places to eat, descriptions of Europe's "must-see" sights, places you'd be better off not seeing, and back-door towns where you can really meet the locals and learn about each country's culture and individuality. Don't leave home without it!Rick Steves' Best of Europe 2007 Overview

Snorkel Bob's Reality guide to Hawaii ReviewWe stumbled into the Snorkel Bob phenomenon early in our first visit to the Kona Coast, and we were grateful for the no-poop attitude. We found a couple of lovely little restaurants, a terrific massage place, and even used some of the snorkel advice.
No, it's not a complete guide, but it helped us to avoid some of the standard-tourist pitfalls and to enjoy the place, not the prefab experiences offered by some of the land sharks.
And, yes--horrors--occasionally he mentions environmental and native-Hawaiian political issues. We think they're worth bringing up.
It's a relaxed bunch of hints from someone who lives there. Take it for what it is and enjoy it.Snorkel Bob's Reality guide to Hawaii Overview

Mobil 2009 Travel Guide New England (Forbes Travel Guide New England) ReviewI toured New England August 2008 and I took this guide with me (along with Frommer's and Fodor's). In my two weeks of driving through out this area I found the Mobil guide useless.
Up front, the guide is incomplete - for an example: Portsmouth, NH, where there are scores of great restaurants (travel.yahoo lists 564) the Mobil guide does not list any restaurants. Not one!
The guide often gives a recommendation but with no description, IE the write up of the recommended "Mike's City Diner" in Boston has two words, "American Menu". That's all.
Mobil Travel Guides give out Five-Star & Four-Star to the country's best Restaurant and Hotels. You want to know where and which ones - right? Well, good luck, as there is nothing to help you find them in the book. Also, there are no maps to help you to find the restaurants or hotels they do recommend. So when you get to a challenging city like Boston you're lost, unless you know the city or pay for a cab. Not good at all.
This is a guide that critical critiques other establishments but did not apply the standard of "excellence" to its own publication. What a disappointment. At best, it is only conditionally recommended. I did find Fodor's New England 2009 to be a super guide.Mobil 2009 Travel Guide New England (Forbes Travel Guide New England) OverviewMobil Travel Guide offers 15 Regional Travel Planners for 2008, featuring extensive reviews of destinations to visit in the United States and Canada.Updated annually, each book features in depth profiles of the best lodgings, restaurants, sights and attractions that each easily drivable region has to offer.Comprehensive and easy to use, each Regional Travel Guide is full of exciting new tours and loaded with maps.--This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Insider Travel Secrets: A collection of strategies and advice for travelers of all kinds ReviewThis book is a little gem for someone like me who has hardly travelled anywhere. The format takes the form of a series of tips for anyone traveling, flying or staying away from home.
I'm not sure I would have the courage to try everything the author suggests. The range of tips is broad from getting discounts to dealing with jet lag.
For me, as someone who is not well travelled, the information is new. For someone who is a bit of a globetrotter it would not be as informative.

Fodor's Washington, D.C. 2009: with Mount Vernon, Alexandria & Annapolis (Fodor's Gold Guides) ReviewTHe reason that i bought Fodor's guide to DC was because at the time it was the only book that included some of the new sights that are in DC such as the Newseum, etc. The book is well laid out by districts and sights we used it alot before we went out. There was one problem however, in the book on the front cover it has the metro lines and stops laid out but they must have forgot to color in the orange line as the bullets and stop names were there but no line to follow, not a problem as there are free metro maps in DC everywhere. Also it was helpful that it had a pullout map of the city to use. Romania & Moldova (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) ReviewThis book is great.
Last summer I took my first overseas trip in my life. Being a lazy American, I did no real research and I landed in Bucharest Romania with nothing to fall back on but the 3rd Edition of Lonely Planet's "Romania & Moldova."
I was supposed to meet a friend who was traveling from Russia, but long story short... I was not able to meet up with him until 5 days later. I did not have any travel itinerary but this book allowed me to make the most of those 5 days by myself.
After those first days on my own, I finally met my buddy in Budapest Hungary, but then we traveled back to Romania for another 5 days or so.
The information in this book made it possible for me to have the trip of a lifetime. The only thing wish I did differently was take a Romanian language book with me.
That said, this book was hands down an invaluable asset to me.
I used this book to visit Bucharest, Deva, Hunedoara, Sighisoara, Sibiu and Poienari. (Except for Bucharest
I did not know anything about these towns and cities but this book helped me find them)
Traveling in a country where I could not speak the language and very few people could speak English was a tough experience for me, but this book helped make my trip an awesome adventure.
If I every make it back to Romania, I will be taking this book with me!

Cancun & the Yucatan For Dummies ReviewI hadn't been to Cancun in twenty years and my traveling companion had never been, so we were looking for more than a book that outlined the location and services of area hotels. We wanted tips, how-to's, cautions, insider secrets and local recommendations. This book had them all. While it's true that the book highlights only the authors' picks for restuarants and hotels and can't be called a comprehensive hotel guide, it was invaluable in the information it lent regarding phones, transportation, money, fees and schedules, customs, activities and more. And when we finally got to Cancun and Cozumel, my companion and I were not only informed and prepared but delighted to find that virtually all of the information (both subjective and objective) was correct. The local restuarant we'd highlighted in the book turned out to be a word-of-mouth tradition in Cozumel. We chose our hotel based on the book's description of offshore snorkeling and found out it was widely known on the island for unrivaled aquatic beauty. True, I could've found much of this information by combing the Internet, but I didn't have to thanks to this book, which also includes any contact info you could ever need. We referred to it constantly while in Mexico and can't reccommend what we came to call "The Book" highly enough.Cancun & the Yucatan For Dummies OverviewThe spectacular coastline of Mexico's Yucatán peninsula is a diverse playground where you can bask on pristine beaches, explore ancient ruins, play golf or tennis, go biking, snorkeling or scuba diving, do serious shopping, or escape to a secluded lagoon. With info on Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, plus the nearby ruins, this friendly guide gives you the low down on:
Everything from unique spa experiences to nature preserves and ecoparks
Accommodations ranging from a luxury resort where guests can dabble in a Viking-clad kitchen or where rooms spread out through the jungle to a European-style inn that offers Spanish lessons or a peaceful beachside palapa (thatch-roofed) inn
All kinds of dining options, including fresh seafood, regional specialties such as pork pibil, papadzules, and poc chuc, or Thai, Argentinean, or Italian cuisine
Diving into the clear depths of the Yucatán cenotes (natural wells)
Birding at Isla Contoy, with more than 70 species of birds as well as a host of marine and animal life
The Panoramic Tower on Isla Mujeres. where you get a stunning view of the island and Cancun
Day trips to the archeological sites at Tulum, Chichén Itzá, and Ek Balam
The pedestrian-only Avenida 5 in Playa del Carmen that's the hot social scene
Night life, including live music venues, tequila bars, sports bars, cafes, and plenty of places where you can dance the night away

Fodor's Australia 2009 (Travel Guide) ReviewI bought this guide book to help me plan and execute a route through Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. Since I did not want to buy three books (one for each state) I opted for this one from Fodor's. It's probably one of the least useful guidebooks that I have ever owned. While it IS difficult to make a guide book on an area as large as Australia, the authors spend an awful lot of space on describing single restaurants that they fancy in detail, while leaving out other helpful listings. So if you are not into the same food that evening you stay in a particular town, you are on your own. The authors have a tendency to list a lot more luxurious places instead of a nice mix across all budgets.
The section on Sidney is still acceptable but western Victoria, South Australia (which pretty much does not exist east and south of Barossa) and Tasmania are so bad, I trashed the book in Sydney rather than taking it home (I have never done that before!).
The book can be used for general planning purposes (which part of Australia do I want to visit in which season and roughly what are the major things that I could see along the way) but while you travel its place is on your bookshelf at home and not in your glove compartment of your campervan.Fodor's Australia 2009 (Travel Guide) OverviewFodor's. Fodor's Italy 2009 (Full-Color Gold Guides) ReviewHaving previously used Lonely Planet guides, this was my first Fodor's guide. In terms of information, the guide is good - a little lightweight, perhaps, in accommodation options. The layout could be better, however, a little thought into the arrangement of information would make it easier to quickly locate the desired pages. Don't bother trying to locate information on Sardinia, however - there isn't any... This is my biggest gripe with the guide - we are all familiar with regional guides with in depth information regarding a specific region (eg Tuscany) and it is sometimes hard to decide whether to buy the country guide or the regional guide. I usually go for the country guide to give me an overview of the entire country, so I am very disappointed that this guide does not cover Sardinia. Moon Beijing and Shanghai (Moon Handbooks) ReviewI used this book when travelling in Shanghai for about 10 days. We will probably go back again but I think I will try another guide next time - probably Lonely Planet Shanghai instead. On the trip I took the Moon guide Beijing & Shanghai in paperback form, and the Lonely Planet China on the Kindle. I wish I had just brought the Lonely Planet China in paperback (the maps on the Kindle were useless but otherwise was like having the book).
My biggest complaint is that the sights (and other places, restaurants, etc.) do not have the name listed in the Chinese characters (just the English translation and occasionally the Pinyin name but without tonal indicators) This means I couldn't use the guide to show the taxi driver where to go. We found that if we don't pronounce the place name with the right tones the driver has no clue what we are saying. Instead we had to use the Lonely Planet China book which did show the Chinese character name.
The most useful part of the guide while in Shanghai were the maps of the neighborhoods. I ended up just ripping out the maps from the back of the book and taking those out with me during the day and left the rest of the book in the room. The maps were easy for me to read and indicated the metro stations. I personally wished some of the maps showed a little more of the city but that was because I was staying just south of the French Concession so it would have been nice to see where I was on the map as well.
Overall the book did have good information on the sights in Shanghai. I read the overviews of what to go and see in Shanghai prior to the trip and it gave me an idea of how to plan my days. But I also found myself reading the Lonely Planet China section on Shanghai, and also googling for more info on what to do in the French Concession (I found a good site with suggestions on streets to wander which was helpful). The Lonely Planet had a walking tour of the Bund which was nice and something like that in the Moon guide would be welcome.
The subway map is either out of date or just incomplete - the line we were staying near wasn't even shown on the map. So the subway map was mostly useless - we'd just go to the metro and look at the map there.
The glossary has at least one error - I got sick and wanted to just eat white steamed rice. But the phrase for white steamed rice in the book is incorrect. There are chinese characters provided in that section though which is helpful, and I think the characters are correct for it (my husband went out with the book to get me some rice so I wasn't present). But whatever the phrase in Pinyin was was wrong. I think the book said it was "rice bai fan" or something when in reality it is "mei fan". (Fan means rice). Something along those lines.
Finally, we went on a day trip to Suzhou. The lack of a map was difficult - we ended up buying one there. The map was essential of course, as it was the only way to communicate with the cab driver about which garden to take us to (because again, the garden descriptions in the book did not show the Chinese name, just the English translation). I was annoyed that the book didn't really indicate how far the train station was from the sights of Suzhou and also about the lack of Chinese names. It turns out it was walking distance which we figured out after we had taken a cab in. No big deal but it would have helped if the book had clued us in regarding that.Moon Beijing and Shanghai (Moon Handbooks) OverviewJournalist and TV reporter Helen Iveson offers her unique perspective on Beijing and Shanghai, from experiencing the grandeur of the Forbidden City and slurping noodles at the open-air night market in Wangfujing to sipping a cocktail while enjoying the Pudong skyline.
