Lonely Planet Taiwan (Lonely Planet Taiwan: Travel Survival Kit) ReviewI couldn't help but feel disapppointed in this book. It really seems to miss the point of foreign travel. For example, in the section on Taipei there are 23 listings for Western restaurants and only 13 for Chinese restaurants. Taipei is one of the best cities in the world for Chinese food, and the writer could only manage 13. This seems terribly unbalanced to me. To make it worse, some of the western restaurants introduced are Planet Hollywood (yeah, I went to Taipei to get the Hollywood experience), TGI Friday's, McDonald's and Subway (which in the author's own words, "needs no introduction" -- my point exactly). I went to Taiwan for the food, so this was a big shortcoming in my point of view. Another point , he only lists two teahouses and both are in (or near) a museum. He gives the excuse that teahouses are always closing all the time (of course that didn't stop him from listing a lot of nightclubs). It just seems like he wasn't interested in researching teahouses. He just couldn't be bothered. Also, he writes very little about the excellent night markets. In fact he devotes an equal amount of space to tell us about food courts. Come on!
It's sad, really. I've used a lot of Lonely Planet guides with good results before, which is why I bought this one without looking at it. However, I can't recommend this one unless your idea of a good vacation in Taipei is eating at TGI Friday's, having coffee at Starbucks, and going to a club (why are you going to Taipei? You can do that at home.) Well, to explain why I gave it two stars instead of one, the transportation and hotel information is useful, so I couldn't bring myself to trash it completely.Lonely Planet Taiwan (Lonely Planet Taiwan: Travel Survival Kit) Overview

Lonely Planet California (Regional Guide) ReviewI'm a Californian, and know several cities reviewed by this guide very well. While I love Lonely Planet guides, I cannot recommend this book after spending an hour looking through it one day at a Borders. (We were headed so San Francisco and I needed a good CA guidebook.)
I live in San Diego and so - as a test case - I graded the book on its coverage of San Diego. I gave it a "D" because every time I checked what it had to say about a location/restaurant I knew, this book got it wrong or missed the fine points. An example? One of the finest restaurants in La Jolla (or all of San Diego, for that matter) is George's at the Cove, but dinner entrees start at $30. Restaurant-savvy Sandiegans know this pricey restaurant has an upstairs open-air sister restaurant, Ocean Terrace Café, with a fabulous view of the bay - and offers a chance to sample a limited selection of George's entrees, at - relatively reasonable - prices ($14 to $20 for dinner entrée). LP Californian seemed to always miss helpful little tips like that, and Frommer's seemed to include many of them. Now maybe Lonely Planet California book has great coverage of all the other cities besides San Diego, who knows? If that's the case then my review is inaccurate. However, if their San Diego coverage is representative of the rest of the book, then I suggest don't buy it! We ended up buying Frommer's California 2006, which I'll give a lukewarm endorsement to because at least its coverage of CA cities I know was better than LP California. Of course, Frommer's guides are so dry and boring, lacking the character that LP guides sometimes have.
Lonely Planet California (Regional Guide) OverviewTempt vertigo on the hills of San Francisco and rub elbows with a star in an LA boutique. Sample syrahs in the Wine Country, cruise cliff-hugging Hwy 1 or hike in the heat of Death Valley. Whether you're a city slicker, road tripper or adrenaline junkie, grab this in-depth, cheeky guide and let our local authors steer you to the treasures of the Golden State.Plot Your Route - 120 detailed maps and seven handy itineraries help you navigate and plan your adventure.Take It Outside - surfing Steamers Lane, climbing Half Dome, skiing Tahoe, diving San Diego: the scoop on the hottest California activities.Eat Your Heart Out - hundreds of restaurant reviews, from tasty taquerías to celebrity-chef bistros.Sleep Easy - the best places for California dreaming, from mountaintop campgrounds to oceanfront resorts.Cross The Border - expanded Las Vegas chapter shows you how to hit the jackpot in flirty, fabulous Sin City, plus tips on heading south to Mexico.

Lonely Planet Krakow ReviewDespite having numerous bad experiences using Lonely Planet guides in the past (India, Nepal, Colombia etc.), I was recently forced to buy the LP guide on Krakow. I had previously promised myself that I would never again waste my money on a L.P. guide. However, due to the absence of any other guides for Krakow, I was forced to break down and buy this "guide".
I believe that L.P.'s popularity is based on the fact that they have a virtual monopoly on guides for some obscure travel destinations and they have no incentive to improve. I doubt that many travellers rely on LP guides for travel in France, since so many better options are availible. However, if you are travelling to an exotic travel destination, you are stuck with LP.
In any event, the Krakow guide confirmed my negative view of L.P. guides. As usual, the history portion of the guide was very informative and made great reading during my train trip from Prague to Krakow.
However, upon arrival the flaws of the L.P. format became painfully apparent. The font was (as usual) tiny and required a magnifying glass to read. The information regarding sights was overdone for minor sights and woefully lacking for important ones.
For example the portion of the guide dealing with Wawel Castle (one of the top sights in Krakow) was completely unorganized and indecipherable. The cathedral had many things in it which looked interesting but were not commented on in the guidebook. After whetting my appetite to check out the famous Wawel Chokra, the guide did not give information as to locating the thing. Ultimatly, I tagged on to a tour group to get the information which should have been contained in the guide!
Another weak point are the lousy maps. They do not conform with reality and are utterly useless. The maps are located in the back of the book. As a result, in order to use the maps, the user has to flip back and forth between the maps and the sections regarding the location you are trying to track down. This is irritating when you are walking along trying to find something.
The main maps contain a polyglot of information which mixes hotels, restaurants and sights in no apparent order. Would it be too much to ask to have some kind of practical organization? Would it not make sense to put a map in each section with a simple key to the locales discussed? Say what you will about Frommer's, they do maps well! L.P. just gets you lost! I just don't see the adventure into complicating a trip with needless frustration caused by getting lost, especially in a simply laid out city such as Krakow.
In it's defense, the guide did give good recommendations regarding hotels and restaurants and was well done in the Auschwitz section.
If you need a usable guide to get around Krakow, my recomendation would be to buy one of the $1 maps which are sold in the bookstores which surround the Cloth Hall. I did just that after retiring this guide after I wasted a day with it. L.P. serves a good function by filling guidebook gaps with less common travel destinations. However, they need to realize that organization and ease of use are as important as the information contained in the guide. They continue to produce guides which are unwieldy and poorly organized.Lonely Planet Krakow OverviewComprehensive coverage of the history, art and architecture of Poland's cultural capital. Essential information on all the sights, from the Wawel castle and Copernicus' academy to Schindler's factory. The guide covers where to stay and eat; excursions to national parks, Auschwitz/Oscwiecim and beyond; and a language section.

Lonely Planet the Netherlands (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) ReviewGeneral background -
================
The Lonely Planet Guides contain a lot of information. They are supposed to be of help to the common backpacker. However, due to the extensive coverage they offer about the countries they discuss, they can also be a very good source of information to travelers with greater means that are interested in a thorough coverage of their destination. Moreover, they can be of use to persons that are interested in learning about the country as a starting point for further studies.
When the reader wishes to travel he has two options of dealing with the wide-ranging material:
1. To read the book almost cover to cover in advance, aiming at planning the trip down to the last small detail while learning a lot about the country - culture, history, climate, geography, conduct and so forth.
2. To read the essential highlights from the book using the contents - in a relatively short time - aiming at learning the basic information needed for getting a good head start (forget about the long "facts About" chapter). Upon getting there it is easy to use the guide on a daily basis for further information.
The guide -
========
This guide is a very good one with one major flaw that can't be disregarded: the prices are given in Guilders, more than a year (!) after the country has completely converted to Euros, since the edition hasn't been updated since the 1st of January 2001. That fact poses a great difficulty at planning the budget for the trip (add to that the considerable rise of prices since the transition to the Euro). This is a serious letdown and not something you would expect from a distinguished publication house. Hopefully they will release a second edition soon.
Aside from the problem mentioned above, the guide is a real help for the traveler; the information and recommendations in the different sections were most helpful and the proved accurate. A good example is the emphasis that is given to a certain rental bike service at Amsterdam that offers no advertising for itself on the bicycle, and keeps many preying eyes away from the bike. The pictures presented inside are well taken and offer a beautiful glance at what the reader might see during his journey. The guide contains the wide assortment of maps of many important and interesting towns and cities the reader might visit with the familiar marking of the recommended places to see/eat/sleep.
I would like to point out that not all the best places to visit are pointed out in the book. I reckon they can't put everything inside and they should and do promote self-exploration. I walked around for hours in each and every place I've visited and was rejoiced to find buildings and corners that were breathtaking - on my own. I recommend you to do the same as in some cases - owning to the desire to stay compact and still comprehensive - the book provides rough guidelines that are superficial and personal opinions that might not always suit your taste.
The chapters about the Netherlands in general and the special boxed texts scattered throughout the book are very interesting and are best read during the trip to answer questions that may pop up. By and large, one will have time for that only once he is home and has the special interest in the country he has just visited.
Amsterdam-
-------------
The Amsterdam chapter may be the most important to the common traveler, simply because there is so much to see and do there. The guide offers good and detailed maps of the city, but too bad they are divided to small maps that are made to fit into the book like regular pages, rather than giving the readers a folded map they would be able to take out for their own convenience. That leaves no choice but to buy a map at the local shops, a reality Lonely Planet can change in the next edition.
As to the content itself, it's a mixed bag. They do provide top-notch info but also tend to exaggerate sometimes in describing places up to a tiresome point. The pages about the transportation possibilities are thorough. In the end of the day, it is more than enough and you wouldn't need the Lonely Planet's Amsterdam guide if you don't plan to live there more than a week or two.
Final note -
========
The Netherlands is a strikingly beautiful country. The cities as well as the countryside are absolutely dazzling, and the people are friendly and helpful. I enjoyed traveling in the land so much that I consider it the peak of my long trip that had been mainly to the countries of South East Asia. This guide contributed a lot to the general feeling I got thanks to all its good graces.Lonely Planet the Netherlands (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) Overview

Lonely Planet San Diego & Tijuana ReviewThe book was very good except that is does miss out some Hostel's I stayed out that were just outstanding! One special one was only two blocks "Pacific Beach" in San Diego, corner of Cass and Garnet Streets called the "International House on the Second Floor". They especially cater for international tourist's and students, and are some of the best people I have ever met, it's also the cleanest Hostel around!. San Diego and Tijuana are very interesting and different but are both just beautiful. The book itself was quite detailed and everything was where it was suppose to be. One of the best in the Lonely Planet series!Lonely Planet San Diego & Tijuana OverviewIncludes tips on San Diego's best beaches for sun-bathing, surfing or catching an evening movie; activities that appeal to every traveller, including coverage of the San Diego zoo, Spanish missions, high-class shopping and late-night carousing; a huge range of places to stay; and advice on crossing the border.

Lonely Planet Vancouver (City Guide) ReviewA very good book and a big help on our recient trip, but I do want to update one section in particular. We went up the tram to Grouse Mountain and were lucky to have a clear winter night and the view was spectacular, the snow, lit for skiers was a fairyland, the city below, a carpet of sparkling light, however, I would like to state that the restaurant was far better than you suggest. It has been renovated and has a new chef and management. It was terrific in every way, service, decor and food. While somewhat up-scale, it is well worth the cost. We told them we would let you know of the changes.Lonely Planet Vancouver (City Guide) OverviewCycle the wilds of Stanley Park, gawk at towering First Nations crest poles or even get nekkid at Wreck Beach - no matter where you go, Vancouver is the envy of the Pacific Northwest. Lonely Planet Washington, DC Condensed ReviewLike the other Lonely Planet Condensed books this one is a day pack must have. It's small enough to be able to stick in a pack or a back pocket but is filled to the brim with useful information on what to see in DC, where to eat, how to get there (excellent maps including details on the Metro), and where to lay your head at the end of the day. We picked this up on a whim but found that it helped us narrow down the best sights and points of interest for Washington, DC when we only had a few days to stay. Well worth the very reasonable price and you'll have no trouble finding the highlights and the hidden treasures of the capital.Lonely Planet Washington, DC Condensed OverviewThis guide to Washington, DC contains information on accommodation to suit all budgets, restaurants, local cuisine, nightlife, history, culture and places to visit.

Lonely Planet Melbourne & Victoria (City Travel Guide) ReviewThe Lonely Planet city guide to "Melbourne" was put together by Simone Egger and David McClymont. The guide I am reviewing is the 5th edition of the guide, so please take note that a 6th edition will be out soon, and it is almost always best to go with the latest edition of a travel guide.
I may update my review after my trip, but from my first reading of the guide, I found it to be fairly comprehensive. It covers the city as well as some things to do in the immediately surrounding region. There are sections which cover the culture (`City Life', `Arts',' Food', `History'), the area (`Neighbourhoods'), and most importantly for the traveler, things to do (`Eating', `Drinking', `Sleeping', `Walking Tours', `Entertainment', `Sports, Health, & Fitness', `Shopping', and `Excursions').
I found this guide to be very helpful in my planning, and only found a couple areas where it wasn't accurate. The first was in hotel costs, and that is undoubtedly due to the fact that I am going to be there during a holiday. The guide is also from 2004, so there would undoubtedly be changes each year anyway. The other area where they might want to update is for getting a visa. Tourist visas for many countries can now be applied for online, but they do not mention that. I feel that one of the most useful sections of this book will probably turn out to be the `Directory' section, which covers a wide range of topics from transportation, money exchange, embassies, tipping, tourist information, and much more.
As the city guide for the city in which Lonely Planet is based, my expectations were very high, and so far they have been met for the most part. As I indicated earlier, I may come back and edit this review after my trip, but for pre-planning, these is easily a four star reference. However, I do see that the 6th edition is due out in October of this year, so if possible I would suggest waiting for the more up-to-date version of the guide.

Lonely Planet Rocky Mountains ReviewI'm so glad I stuck with Lonely Planet (LP) for my 4 day trip to Colorado where we covered everything from Rockies to Colo. Springs, Denver, Boulder and also did rafting and hiking.
This book is great and lists everything that you need. Accomodations, maps, rafting companies, tourist traps, restaurants, etc. Very nice, exactly what you would expect from LP. Although I haven't tried other states yet, I'm looking forward to making a trip to Yellowstone soon ...
Thanks lonely planet!!Cons: In case you are new to the lonely planet style of writing, let me warn you that if you are looking for a book which is heavily edited and proofread, then you will be disappointed. This lonely planet book is written in a style which is reminiscent of the old LP books - it seems more like a brain dump of everything the writers encountered. They then tried to put most of the things under appropriate headings and did a fair job. This is what I expect from a 'pack and go' book like LP so it works for me. YMMV.Lonely Planet Rocky Mountains OverviewLists the outdoor activities which draw most people to the region and includes skiing meccas and hip college towns such as Boulder and Missoula. The national parks are covered including bear facts about Yellowstone with information covering the Idaho World Potato Exposition, need we say more?

Lonely Planet: Mexico's Pacific Coast ReviewThe problem with this guide is that it was written by two people: Danny Palmerlee's advice was spot-on, but Sandra Bao's section was awful. Incorrect maps, serious errors and bad hotel advice. It's as though she were never there. She clearly relied on hearsay without checking things out first hand. Avoid this guide and get a more general Mexico book written by more authors.Lonely Planet: Mexico's Pacific Coast OverviewThis guide shows how to avoid the all-inclusive resorts and tourist traps. It offers information on regional cuisine and places from Mazatlan to Oaxaca including Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco and beach spots.

Frommer's Nashville & Memphis (Frommer's Complete) ReviewI just came back from my first trip to Memphis and Nashville. I have to say that this book was my life source. We only had a limited amount of time to see everything on our wish list, and this book made it possible to plan the best sites, the best restaurants, where to stay, shop and everything. All of the information it gave was useful and was essential to our amazing trip. They even include fun and comprehensive walking tours. I would recommend this book to anyone going to Nash and Memphis.Frommer's Nashville & Memphis (Frommer's Complete) Overview

Romania & Moldova (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) ReviewThis book is great.
Last summer I took my first overseas trip in my life. Being a lazy American, I did no real research and I landed in Bucharest Romania with nothing to fall back on but the 3rd Edition of Lonely Planet's "Romania & Moldova."
I was supposed to meet a friend who was traveling from Russia, but long story short... I was not able to meet up with him until 5 days later. I did not have any travel itinerary but this book allowed me to make the most of those 5 days by myself.
After those first days on my own, I finally met my buddy in Budapest Hungary, but then we traveled back to Romania for another 5 days or so.
The information in this book made it possible for me to have the trip of a lifetime. The only thing wish I did differently was take a Romanian language book with me.
That said, this book was hands down an invaluable asset to me.
I used this book to visit Bucharest, Deva, Hunedoara, Sighisoara, Sibiu and Poienari. (Except for Bucharest
I did not know anything about these towns and cities but this book helped me find them)
Traveling in a country where I could not speak the language and very few people could speak English was a tough experience for me, but this book helped make my trip an awesome adventure.
If I every make it back to Romania, I will be taking this book with me!

Lonely Planet Maui ReviewIf you are looking for a guidebook to Maui that has substantial information regarding restaurants and the hidden treasures of Maui, look elsewhere! One of the major activities on Maui is a snorkel trip to Molokini, an underground volcanic crater. This book had a small paragraph on Molokini, but failed to recommend (or even list) any companies offering the boat trip. We had to do this leg work on our own.
Also, while I understand that there are thousands of restaurants in Maui and a book could not possibly list them all, this book listed maybe 5 restaurants in each area of Maui - just a very small fraction. Very rarely did the book recommend against eating somewhere - everything was sugar coated to the point where one would think that all the restaurants in Maui are great (not true!).
The book did get 3 stars for providing basic descriptions and maps. I would not use this book if you are looking for any sort of recommendations on where to spend your time in Maui, etc.Lonely Planet Maui OverviewExperience Maui where the blue water laps white-sand beaches and the world's largest dormant volcano rises from the sugarcane and pineapple fields. Whether lying in the sun, trekking across Haleakala Crater, or swimming in the pools of Oheo Gulch, this detailed guide aims to point the way.

Lonely Planet Costa Rica ReviewJust got back from Costa Rica (2 wks), and had a good time, though it wasn't without serious disappointment.
While there we noticed that almost all the guidebooks people were carrying around were Lonely Planet (LP). But everywhere we stayed that LP raved about was very disappointing, and the few places we stayed that were very understated in LP were excellent.
My theory is that so many people are using LP that if a place gets a rave recommendation the business just pours in. They jack up their prices, sit back and rest on their reputation, and the facility and service deteriorate. But the money keeps pouring in because of that great LP review. Meanwhile the underrated places have to work their butts off to get business. Even though LP CR is only 2 years old, the prices of the highly rated hotels were off by as much as 50%, whereas the ones with understated descriptions were right on.
Generally, I like using LP, but for CR I would say that too many people do. Grab a different guidebook and cross-ref it with LP. If it has a nice sounding place that's not in LP, stay there!
We also used Frommer's even though it doesn't have much of a selection of budget places. Frommer's descriptions are so much more colorful and accurate. You get the impression that they only write about places for which they have first-hand knowledge. Plus Frommer's 2004 edition is new and the prices were exactly right. But, it's not sufficient by itself because it just doesn't list enough places.
Our rule of thumb for LP CR: If LP writes more than half a column about a hotel or lodge, avoid it! It will be overrated by now, with ridiculously high prices, and an inattentive staff.
Next gripe related to the advice in this guidebook: all the concerns and warnings are grossly exagerated. The roads are bad, but they don't swallow cars and break axles. There may be some crime, but there aren't people learching in the shadows to flatten your tires every time you stop. The busy season doesn't fill every hotel -- in fact without reservations, we got our first choice of hotels every night. I wonder how much more fun my trip would have been if I hadn't let this book make me so defensive!
Here's a tip for Costa Rican hotels: it doesn't matter how expensive the place is, the showers are lousy, with very little hot water and terrible water pressure. So don't pay $45 for a place just because it has hot showers when the place next door is only $25.Lonely Planet Costa Rica OverviewThis guide offers travellers the full range of options available for travellers to Costa Rica - from secluded beaches to wildlife reserves, from camping to staying in luxury hotels.

Lonely Planet Mexico, 9th Edition ReviewI live in Mexico, and I bought it to have a better reference while traveling in my own country. I've found places that I didn't know that existed, it has not let me down. The maps are accurate and the recommendations always are correct. The only problem I see is that the prices are not up to date, but it gives you an idea of what to expect to pay in hotels or restaurants.Lonely Planet Mexico, 9th Edition OverviewAn updated guide to Mexico that delivers the whole enchilada, from Aztec and Mayan temples to desert drives and highland hikes.
