Betrayal: An Interactive Novel ReviewBetrayal is a hair-raising page-turner, a beautifully constructed novel rooted firmly in a little-known historical context, that of American experimentation with chemical and nuclear weapons iin the far north. Kathy Kaluk, daughter of a New England mother and an Eskimo father, returns to her native Alaska to take a research job, and is soon doing more research than her superiors want her to do. The involvement of the FBI, not only in covering up the tremendous damage caused by testing in the arctic but in efforts to recruit student moles, is described in harrowing detail, as are the effects of radioactive material on traditional hunting grounds where animals become radioactive by eating contaminated grass and people who eat the animals die of radiation poisoning. This is a thorough exposé, presented in very interesting and readable form.Betrayal: An Interactive Novel Overview ‘We have to distrust each other. It is our only defense against betrayal.'Deep in a rugged section of Alaska, something's making people ill. It's cancer - and it's striking dozens of laborers and soldiers who worked there on a nuclear cleanup site. But when anti-nuclear activist Carrie Graham turns up evidence of the improper disposal of radioactive waste, it reveals something even more sinister. And the U.S. government will stop at nothing to prevent the information's release, even if it means putting an end to Graham's activities - permanently. A multi-voiced science thriller with far-reaching implications, Betrayal follows the repercussions stemming from nuclear, biological and chemical weapons tests during the early days of the Cold War and beyond. From spirited protests at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Northern California, to treacherous intrigue waged inside the ivory towers of academia, Betrayal takes you inside the struggle to expose a massive nuclear cover-up where even those on the same side don't dare trust each other.Truly an interactive novel, Betrayal is fully integrated with the Web site: www.betrayal-interactivenovel.com. The site is packed with supplemental information and primary sources to increase understanding, while empowering readers to share their thoughts on nuclear issues through an online community forum.

Frommer's Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call 2008 (Frommer's Cruises) ReviewThis is a very helpful guide for those taking an Alaska cruise; it helps you choose the right cruise for your objectives. It reviews the various landtours available but I particularly like the section in each port-of-call that suggests self-conducted tours with detailed maps, costs, and directions. For example, I will be taking a bus available near the pier to see Mendenhall Glacier (near Juneau); I can set my own departure/return time and save 70% of what the cruise ship company wanted to charge me for taking their (the same!) tour.Frommer's Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call 2008 (Frommer's Cruises) OverviewExperience the best a place has to offer on the cruise that's right for you. Frommer's. Your trip begins with us.
Exact prices, including brochure rates, with tips on how to find deep discounts, so you can plan the perfect trip no matter what your budget.
Extensive descriptions of all the major ships sailing in Alaska, with information on everything from cabins and ship facilities to shore excursions and recreational activities.
Comprehensive ship ratings that grade the essential elements of a cruise experience (dining, activities, children's programs, public areas, cleanliness, and overall enjoyment) from "poor" to "outstanding."
Complete coverage of the Inside Passage and Gulf of Alaska, with off-the-beaten-path experiences and new takes on top attractions.
Bonus wildlife guide in the appendix highlights the animals you're most likely to see-from whales to bald eagles to bears.

Washington Discovery Guide: A Remarkably Useful Travel Companion for Motorists, RVers, and Other Explorers Review
Although we found several typo-s within the text, the Washington Discovery Guide was proven useful for our vacation. It covered most major and small towns, but certainly not all. The details provided were unique and unlike most guidebooks. It read easily and featured additional information, such as population numbers, elevation, and many other tips for the road.Washington Discovery Guide: A Remarkably Useful Travel Companion for Motorists, RVers, and Other Explorers Overview

Frommer's Alaska 2009 (Frommer's Complete) ReviewAs someone who lives in Alaska, operates a popular Alaska travel website (Alaska.org), and helps people plan custom Alaska vacations, I can confidently say this is the most useful general guidebook to our state. It's more comprehensive, more readable, and more detailed than other Alaska guidebooks.
I think this is mostly because Charles lives in Alaska and updates the book each year. Most travel publishers update their books every couple years and use writers who live in New York or somewhere else. As a result, this book offers details and specifics you learn only by actually doing what you write about--and these are the very details you need to plan your Alaska trip. For example, when writing about halibut fishing in Homer, he mentions the possibility of seasickness. When writing about other activities, he tells you what to bring and wear. Prices and schedules are exact.
Alaska is a complex and unfamiliar destination. Most people don't know where to start when planning a trip. Unfortunately, that's why so many people take a cruise when they might have enjoyed a land tour more--if they only knew how to plan it. That's where the "Planning A Trip" section comes in. It discusses the various travel styles and trip types possible in Alaska and why you would choose one over another.
It contains the kind of insight and authority that come from really knowing a destination. Charles writes, for example, "Studies by Alaska tourism experts have found that many people choose escorted packages to avoid risks that don't really exist." Or, "It's also possible for an independent traveler to obtain some of the predictability a package tour provides. You can reserve accommodations and activities and control your expenses by using a good travel agent experienced in Alaska travel." This is the type of authoritative, insider advice you need to plan a successful Alaska vacation.
This book seems to improve each year--I think because the author maintains a website for reader questions and incorporates the answers into subsequent editions. For example, the book has a section on Suggested Itineraries for trips of different lengths, for family trips, for winter trips, etc.. Itineraries are hugely helpful, because even if you know where you want to go and what you want to see in Alaska, it's sometimes really hard to figure out how long to spend in each place and how best to get from one to the next in a state with limited transportation infrastructure.
In response to reader questions about inaccurate Mapquest information, Charles added a driving times table which sets the record straight on how long it takes to travel the various rural Alaska highways, how fast you can drive, where the best views are, and where you can get gas. Another really useful section is Charles' "Best of Alaska" list. Alaska is so vast, with so many travel options, that this section helps you cut to the chase if know your primary interests.
Two other things separate this book from others. First, it's written from the perspective of someone who seeks out unique and different Alaska travel experiences. Charles writes, "The mistake some people make is to focus only on the largest and most famous destinations." Accordingly, he gives quick coverage to the big attractions you can learn about online or anywhere else and instead gives more coverage to unusual, off-the-beaten finds. Examples include describing a hike near Seward to an old military fort where you can explore underground with flashlights, or explaining how to hook up with a local guide on in Barrow to go polar bear viewing on a Humvee. You won't get these ideas from other guidebooks--and they'll probably end up being your most memorable Alaska travel experiences.
The other thing that differentiates this book is how readable it is. Unlike most travel writers, Charles is a serious author with other non-fiction, non-travel titles to his name. His literary writing style is interesting and fun to read.
I don't really have any criticisms of the book. In fact, if the truth be told, it was Charles' authoritative, honest approach that inspired me when I wrote my own Alaska.org travel planning website. Even today, we keep a copy in our Anchorage travel agency call center for our agents to refer to when helping visitors plan trips to remote parts of the state the agent may not have personally visited.

White Sky, Black Ice (Nathan Active Mysteries) ReviewThis book is a flawless gem! Born in a native village but raised in a big city, a young Alaskan State Trooper is posted to the town where he was born. He is faced with solving a puzzling series of suicides while trying to balance himself between two cultures. It's a corking good mystery and placed in a genuine Alaskan setting.
I was a Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal in Alaska during its final territorial and early statehood years. What impressed me most about this book was its absolute authenticity. The natives, the way they live, their unique speech patterns, the land they live in, and the climate they endure are all true to life. Just as realistic are the problems facing a police officer in the rural areas of Alaska.
WHITE SKY, BLACK ICE turned back the clock for me and I felt right at home, page after page. Read it. You'll learn more about the real Alaska from this book than from any guided tour!White Sky, Black Ice (Nathan Active Mysteries) Overview

Faith of Cranes: Finding Hope and Family in Alaska ReviewWhen I sat sat down to write this review after reading The Faith of Cranes (for a second time), it began as a detailed, multi-paragraph effort to describe how important such a wrenching, tender tale of death, loss, hope and love can be in a world beset by the seemingly inevitable loss of environmental integrity to the juggernaut of development, and how well the author tells it. I went on and on about how heartbreaking and poetic, grinding and glorious, painful and uplifting Lentfer's story is, until the words began to whirl together in a cacophony like that of a thousand cranes croaking and calling as they leap into the air and rise into a spiraling gyre.
And my original excess verbiage was completely unnecessary, because any reader who has ever cared deeply about a wilderness, the fate of our fellow creatures, his or her family, friends, mate, or a child, will find their own nuggets to cherish in this quiet, lovely book. Quite simply, it is one of the best books I have read in years, and for that I give it a solid three-hanky, five-star rating.Faith of Cranes: Finding Hope and Family in Alaska OverviewAn authentic new voice in Alaskan literature FAITH OF CRANES weaves together three parallel narratives: the plight and beauty of sandhill cranes, one man's effort to recover hope amid destructive climate change, and the birth of a daughter. Hank Lentfer listened to cranes passing over his home in Southeast Alaska for twenty years before bothering to figure out where they were going. On a very visceral level, he didn't want to know. After all, cranes gliding through the wide skies of Alaska are the essence of wildness. But the same animals, pecking a living between the cornfields and condos of California's Central Valley, seem trapped and diminished. A former wildlife biologist and longtime conservationist, Lentfer had come to accept that no number of letters to the editor or trips to D.C. could stop the spread of clear cuts, alter the course of climate change, or ensure that his beloved cranes would always appear. And he had no idea that following the paths of cranes would lead him to the very things he was most afraid of: parenthood, responsibility, and actions of hope in a frustrating and warming world.FAITH OF CRANES is Lentfer's quiet, lyrical memoir of his home and community near Glacier Bay that reveals a family s simple acts planting potatoes, watching cranes, hunting deer as well as a close and eccentric Alaskan community. It shows how several thousand birds and one little girl teach a new father there is no future imaginable that does not leave room for compassion and grace.

Frommer's Alaska 2010 (Frommer's Color Complete) ReviewAs the only state I have never visited, Alaska has been on my short list for a long time.
Generally what I look to a travel guide for is recommendations on hotels and restaurants. I have made my reservations online for many many years, looking for out of the way places and a more authentic experience. In that regard, this guide really hits the mark. Written by a Alaska native, seasoned writer of some repute and naturalist, the book is an enjoyable read and unusual, in my experience, in that it really gives you an insider's perspective. Writer Charles Wohlforth points to the most beautiful vistas and how to get there; and provides perspective on Alaska's history, it's residents (both human and wildlife,) how, when and where to approach them.
He and his team go farther than many guides in that they do not just recommend a tour or hotel, they review all of the options and explain which is best for whom. that is he covers luxury travel, economy travel, nature tours... so that you can put together an itinerary best suited to you.
The guide covers all of the things one would expect: an over view of each region and/ or city, average temperature and weather chart, a large coated pull out map as well as numerous smaller detail maps, guides to parks, tours, activities, hotels and various modes of transportation. Where he goes beyond most guides is with his knowledge of native wildlife, where to see it and how to safely approach (or conversely when to keep your distance). That said this guide would also be of interest to bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts in general.
The book is both comprehensive and relatively compact. Because of its dimensions, it is more portable than most books of this scope. That said I believe it is the only guide you would need (speaking as one who usually buys a comprehensive book for planning and a compact guide for actual travel).
The only downside I see to this book is that after reading it I do not know that I would be satisfied with a 7-14 day tour. Alaska is immense, rich with beautiful and unusual vistas, diverse cultural experiences and a wide variety of recreational activities as well. After reading this book I am no longer thinking about hopping a 7 day cruise from Seattle and think I'd like to spend some time on land, inland, and get to experience some of the Alaska that you do not get to see from a cruise boat (or tour bus).Frommer's Alaska 2010 (Frommer's Color Complete) Overview
Completely updated every year, Frommer's Alaska features gorgeous color photos of the sights and experiences that await you.
Our expert author lets you know your best bets for spotting wildlife, catching salmon or halibut, and getting up-close-and-personal with glaciers. Plus, detailed information on Alaska's most scenic drives and where you can go to interact with Native people and culture.
Our cruise experts break down the variety of Alaska cruises, from the debate between small versus large boats to who you can expect to be sailing with when you choose a particular cruise line.
Plus, the best scenic drives along Alaska's highways,a guide to exploring Denali and Kenai Fjords national parks,"when, where and how" for viewing bears, whales, and other wildlife andinsider advice on getting the most out of your Alaska cruise experience

The Quest (GodQuest) ReviewI have just finished reading this book. Very good and powerful. I would recommend it to all of my friends. One of the best Christian novels I have read Amazing. The Quest (GodQuest) OverviewA single phone call launched twenty-three-year-old Emma Seeger on the journey of a lifetime. And it turned out to be a more dangerous and more consequential journey than she could have imagined ... or feared. The call was from the woman Emma despised most in the world her father's wife, Emma's stepmother, a woman who had taken away Emma's father. Not once. Not twice. Three times. She had turned Daniel Seeger into a born-again Christian, married him, and dragged him off to Israel, where they worked as some sort of missionaries. It was an occupation Emma viewed as misguided, if not outright dangerous. Now, Emma learns, her father has disappeared in the midst of escalating political tension and violence. After early efforts to find him prove fruitless, Emma launches out on an odyssey filled with adventure, frustration, danger, and an unlikely partner her stepmother Katya, whose faith alternately repulses and intrigues Emma. Their conflicting personalities and competing beliefs could even endanger the success of the one thing they have in common: their shared goal of finding Daniel and returning him to safety. Will they come together to rescue him before it is too late? Or, will their greatest fears be realized?
