Frommer's Santa Fe, Taos and Albuquerque ReviewWe used this guide to plan a couple of trips to Santa Fe and in and around Taos, and were very happy with the results. The book starts with a general introduction to northern New Mexico, covering history, art, architecture and so on. Then there's a chapter on general visitor information for the region, and a section for foreign visitors. The remaining chapters are:
Getting to Know Santa Fe; Where to Stay in Santa Fe; Where to Dine in Santa Fe; What to See & Do in Santa Fe; Santa Fe Shopping; Santa Fe After Dark; Excursions from Santa Fe; Getting to Know Taos; Where to Stay in Taos; Where to Dine in Taos; What to See & Do in Taos; Albuquerque
The organization is good, with the hotels, for example, clearly broken out by price range ("Very Expensive", "Expensive", "Moderate" and "Inexpensive"). But the real value of the book is the author's candid evaluations. We've been burned in the past by guide books that gave every establishment a glowing review, so it was pleasant to use this book to find lunch in Taos one day last month. Here's some of what we found:
Ogelvie's Bar and Grill: "The food here is not flavorful, and the atmosphere is dated"
Eske's Brew Pub: "The crowd is local, a few people sitting at the bar . . . . At times it can be a rowdy place, but mostly it's just fun, lots of ski patrollers and mountain guides . . . ."
Outback in Taos: "My kayaking buddies always go here after a day on the river. That will give you an idea of the level of informality (very), as well as the quality of the food and beer (great) and the size of the portions (large)."

There were a lot of useful tidbits on local culture and customs (such as the water bottle shrines along the highway), and the reviews of places to stay and dine and explore were up to date and relevant. My only complaint was that the number of restaurants reviewed in Buenos Aires was quite limited...I would have preferred to have had more establishments reviewed there. I understand the problem...there are SO MANY restuarants there! But, it would be nice to have more of them reviewed...sometimes we heard from others about possible places to eat, but could find no review. Frommer's Las Vegas 2007 (Frommer's Complete) ReviewFrommer's Las Vegas was the second travel book on Las Vegas that I have purchased. The First was the Discovery Channel's Insight Guide, which proved to be more history and color photos than travel advice. Frommer's is known for their "opinionated" and "honest" reviews of travel destinations. We'll this one is no exception.
The book is laced with sarcastic tones and comments about the looks and feel of the casinos' and attractions in Vegas. The information is very personal and honest, to a point. The author Mary Herczog, is very opinionated about the feel of the places she visits. In a good sense, she lets you know about the space and attractiveness of each hotel and the feel of being there. But these are merely her opinions. Some of the places she finds distasteful and tacky, you might say magnificent! But never the less the whole book is very helpful in planning a trip to Las Vegas if you have never been before. Read again. Is helpful if you have never been to Las Vegas. Otherwise, you should have visited most of the major casino's there and decided for youself.
The book is more of a Encylopedia of Las Vegas, you pay for the organization of information. Very well written, but very steep in bias. Note to Fellow MEN: This book is written from the perspective of a WOMAN(No Offense). A smokey, crowded and noisey casino to Mary Herczog might be heaven to some of us Male Wager-Holics.
Overall the book is fun to read, informative, helpful in organizing addresses and phone numbers, insightful and interesting. Very opinionated, but good. Frommer's Las Vegas 2008 (Frommer's Complete) ReviewDespite having been to Vegas a dozen times over the past ten years, it had been three years since my last trip. Knowing how much changes, I bought this guide to help sort out what was different for better or worse.
For the most part, its packed with solid advice. The narration takes a very skeptical voice, which is exactly what a place like Vegas needs. Its great to see hyper-advertised shows and hotels laid bare, such as with the very balanced review of Danny Gans and the honest perceptions of The Palms. Its also good to see off strip non-gaming destinations get some print, even all the way out to an Area 51 guide! Everything that's worth seeing gets mentioned.
However, that same skeptical narration is also too self aware. Rather than accepting that a person who has paid money for a guide book of Vegas probably has some idea of what they're getting into, the narration belabors the obvious to the point of mocking the reader for drinking the Vegas Kool-Aid. Stating that the décor is "giggle inducing" or that certain shows are simply so overrated that they're unreviewable is about as cynical as reminding us that Mickey Mouse is really just a guy in a suit, so be sure to look with scorn on children lining up to see him. I don't think anyone is going to select a hotel because of a plaster sphinx, but that's part of why you pick Vegas over Atlantic City or Orlando. Above all, a guide book should respect the reader's decision to go to a destination and perhaps future editions will remember that.
The guide spends copious amounts of text describing how things used to be. While the reflections of a veteran casino dealer are interesting, the discourse continues in the hotel reviews. Many of the hotels seem to be judged relative to how they were in the past; not against comparable properties as they are today. Its useful when used to accentuate something that has changed recently, but extraneous when belaboring how things were decades ago. New properties raise the bar, older properties lose their luster. We got it.
Another frustration is the lack of relative comparison between hotels. While the star ratings are accurate, the reasons why you would stay at one property over another with the same rating aren't spelled out very well. Since a wide range of price and quality are available, the nuances are what make an informed decision. With a lot of that glossed over, it would be easy to select a hotel that you weren't happy with because of a detail you felt misinformed about, say pool size or the general demographics the hotel is trying to attract.
Its easy to get disillusioned with Vegas and focus on what's different today as opposed to what makes a trip to Vegas different than a trip anywhere else. If anything, that's what this guide suffers from. Its like that one member of your family that finds fault with everything while you're on vacation; you wish they would just appreciate the fact that you're there and not somewhere else.

Frommer's Alaska 2009 (Frommer's Complete) ReviewAs someone who lives in Alaska, operates a popular Alaska travel website (Alaska.org), and helps people plan custom Alaska vacations, I can confidently say this is the most useful general guidebook to our state. It's more comprehensive, more readable, and more detailed than other Alaska guidebooks.
I think this is mostly because Charles lives in Alaska and updates the book each year. Most travel publishers update their books every couple years and use writers who live in New York or somewhere else. As a result, this book offers details and specifics you learn only by actually doing what you write about--and these are the very details you need to plan your Alaska trip. For example, when writing about halibut fishing in Homer, he mentions the possibility of seasickness. When writing about other activities, he tells you what to bring and wear. Prices and schedules are exact.
Alaska is a complex and unfamiliar destination. Most people don't know where to start when planning a trip. Unfortunately, that's why so many people take a cruise when they might have enjoyed a land tour more--if they only knew how to plan it. That's where the "Planning A Trip" section comes in. It discusses the various travel styles and trip types possible in Alaska and why you would choose one over another.
It contains the kind of insight and authority that come from really knowing a destination. Charles writes, for example, "Studies by Alaska tourism experts have found that many people choose escorted packages to avoid risks that don't really exist." Or, "It's also possible for an independent traveler to obtain some of the predictability a package tour provides. You can reserve accommodations and activities and control your expenses by using a good travel agent experienced in Alaska travel." This is the type of authoritative, insider advice you need to plan a successful Alaska vacation.
This book seems to improve each year--I think because the author maintains a website for reader questions and incorporates the answers into subsequent editions. For example, the book has a section on Suggested Itineraries for trips of different lengths, for family trips, for winter trips, etc.. Itineraries are hugely helpful, because even if you know where you want to go and what you want to see in Alaska, it's sometimes really hard to figure out how long to spend in each place and how best to get from one to the next in a state with limited transportation infrastructure.
In response to reader questions about inaccurate Mapquest information, Charles added a driving times table which sets the record straight on how long it takes to travel the various rural Alaska highways, how fast you can drive, where the best views are, and where you can get gas. Another really useful section is Charles' "Best of Alaska" list. Alaska is so vast, with so many travel options, that this section helps you cut to the chase if know your primary interests.
Two other things separate this book from others. First, it's written from the perspective of someone who seeks out unique and different Alaska travel experiences. Charles writes, "The mistake some people make is to focus only on the largest and most famous destinations." Accordingly, he gives quick coverage to the big attractions you can learn about online or anywhere else and instead gives more coverage to unusual, off-the-beaten finds. Examples include describing a hike near Seward to an old military fort where you can explore underground with flashlights, or explaining how to hook up with a local guide on in Barrow to go polar bear viewing on a Humvee. You won't get these ideas from other guidebooks--and they'll probably end up being your most memorable Alaska travel experiences.
The other thing that differentiates this book is how readable it is. Unlike most travel writers, Charles is a serious author with other non-fiction, non-travel titles to his name. His literary writing style is interesting and fun to read.
I don't really have any criticisms of the book. In fact, if the truth be told, it was Charles' authoritative, honest approach that inspired me when I wrote my own Alaska.org travel planning website. Even today, we keep a copy in our Anchorage travel agency call center for our agents to refer to when helping visitors plan trips to remote parts of the state the agent may not have personally visited.

Ask Arthur Frommer: And Travel Better, Cheaper, Smarter ReviewActually, contrary to another review I have read on this site, this book is one of the most plain-talking, no-holds-barred travel books I've ever laid my hands on. This guy isn't afraid to say stuff that could get him in trouble with the rest of the travel industry. Like this, on page 410: TripAdvisor.com is "virtually useless" and its rankings "have no value at all." On page 76, he says modern cruise ships look like they were "gigantic, metallic, orgone boxes of the sort envisioned in the 1920s by hallucinating psychologists." (That description is pretty hilarious. But then he goes on to tell you how to get a discount on one.) On p. 450, he calls for a wholesale change of guard at the Department of Homeland Security for the sake of the country's future! It's very fast-moving, with fact after fact coming right at you in between those opinions, and lots of websites worth bookmarking, so if you can't find something to use on one page, the next page is likely to help, and what's more, you get the feeling he really has tried all the things he's writing about. The book is chatty and dishy at times, and always opinionated, but no one can argue that this guy doesn't know his stuff. I don't know any other book that has all these details in one place. For example, Frommer's book mentions an airfare booking website called Yapta twice and it takes three pages to explain the ins and outs. I also have Peter Greenberg's recent book, and he gives Yapta just five lines. There's simply more meat here. I took it along on my recent trip, and it was less than helpful. Many towns and places in HI have native names, but the translation is not in the book, so asking for directions was harder than it needed to be. Several hotels and good local restaurants were not listed. Travel times (either by car or bus) between cities were mentioned in passing, if at all. Local landmarks might get a word or two in description, but there was a detailed listing of every mall and shopping plaza. The following comments are for Frommer:As always, sometimes the prices where a little off, on both sides, sometimes they where a little higher and sometime a little lower. I would recommend to Frommer to research options for getting to and from the hotel in Cancun as when we arrived at the airport this June 2010 you have many taxi options to get to your hotel. And all the services are barking out their services. Options such as riding in a shared van that drop off passengers at different hotels vs. getting an individual taxi are a better option, and how to get around the hotel via the local air conditioned tourist bus vs. the hotel taxi is an option that will save the tourist a lot of money for trip activities. Insiders' Guide to Williamsburg 16th: and Virginia's Historic Triangle (Insiders' Guide Series) ReviewThe Insiders Guide to the historic triangle badly needed this updating, especially in the area of restaurants and shopping; so many have closed and new ones opened.
This is a very satisfactory guide, and unless you really want all the historical minutia that the individual Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown guides will give you this is all you need. The Williamsburg chronology goes up to 2007 and Queen Elizabeth's visit, but other listings are more recent.
This guide does not go into as much detail as its predecessor in describing day trips farther a field, but if you are going even into the Hampton Roads, Newport News area you really need a Virginia guide anyway. With that said it puzzles me that there are listings done for as far away as Virginia Beach, Smithfield and Tangier Island, but yet it leaves out Gloucester, (except for one mention of a daffodil festival), which is just across the river from Yorktown and played a key part in the battle and still has a charming colonial area and restaurants with river views.
A big improvement is the listing are price guides for restaurants and hotels, a change from the last edition. There are telephone numbers, addresses and web sites for the listings. Also appreciated is the honesty in evaluating one of Williamsburg's well known shopping destinations: Williamsburg Pottery Factory and Outlets which has gone downhill in recent years, but some tour operators still include it on their stops.
One thing I wish was made clearer is the distinction between the Yorktown Victory Center and the National Park Center and the same situation at Jamestown. I know many visitors have visited the Victory Center at Yorktown and the Jamestown Settlement instead of the National historic site centers and thought they were at the real setting, which they aren't. There really should be clearer guidance both at the locations and in the guidebooks.
Maps are clear and information on modern attractions such as amusement parks, the arts, military sites retirement, health care and media are given. Top 10 Toronto (EYEWITNESS TOP 10 TRAVEL GUIDE) ReviewOver the years, I have been very pleased with travel guides by DK Publishing, but this one was a big let down. We tried several of the recommended restaurants, and they were absolute disappointments. Whoever recommended these restaurants could not have actually tried them, as they consistently reflected poor quality food, service, and hygiene. Unfortunately, the most recent edition of this guidebook available in 2008 was published in 2005, so it was outdated. Several of the recommended restaurants are now closed. This confirms that they were probably not good restaurants in the first place. I wonder if the publisher is paid to put certain restaurants on the list? If I were to compile a list of the "Top Ten" restaurants in my home town, I feel quite certain that they would still be open in three years.
As for other area attractions, the descriptions offer no real insight as to their real desirability or how long you might plan to spend at each location. There was no information on pricing for most attractions. Consequently, the book was useless in budgeting both time and money.

It is clear that the author has not set foot on Oahu or visited Waikiki in quite a while as many of her resturant picks have changed hands, hotels don't offer services listed and the parks have all changed prices and hours of operation. We laughingly called it "The Book of Lies," for its inept and incorrect information. You would be better off seeking information from the local cabbies and street vendors. Having said that, this one was very disappointing. The descriptions were full of meaningless adjectives. There was no way to differentiate which restaurant or which lodging I might like better. One was the most beautiful, one the prettiest, one the loveliest. The author seemed to like rustic a lot which is not necessarily a compliment in my book. The restaurants were all a foodie's dream. He also devoted way to much space to wineries. There must be something else to do in Oregon besides drink wine.
