Everything Family Guide to New England: Where to eat, play, and stay in America's scenic and historic Northeast (Everything Series) ReviewI'm planning a 2008 trip to New England for my family which includes my wife, and my 9-, 13-, and 17-year-old children. The book is written as a state-by-state guide showcasing must-see activities for each state, then laying out recommended attractions, places to eat and stay, and other miscellaneous items by region within the state. I would guess over 95% of the items in the book include web addresses where one can do more research. This book was my primary tool for creating our itinerary while Frommer's encyclopedia-like approach and Insight Guides' many pictures provided additional reference information. The only slight knock I have is that not all items found in the book are listed in the index, so sometimes you have to recall where it's at and hunt it down via page-flipping. However, the book isn't overly large and the type is easy to read, so this isn't difficult. If you're planning a trip for your family, I can't recommend it enough. Mommy Cruises: A Guide to Cruising with Kids ReviewI have never cruised before, and so I found Ms. Brubeck's book to be incredibly informative. As I have a four year-old child as well, I liked reading the tips and reviews about the different children's programs on different cruise lines. In addition, I enjoyed seeing the many photos of the different cabins to get the gist of the sizes. The list of websites for additional tips is also a great wealth of info. Finally, the part about Disney cruise lines has convinced my husband that we will have to take a Disney cruise sometime in the future.

Fun with the Family in Southern California: Hundreds of Ideas for Day Trips with the Kids ReviewAs a mom of 3 young ones under age 11, I am always looking for things to do to avoid the "mom, were boorrreeeddd!" problem. I found this book at first at my local library and was so impressed I thought "I HAVE to have it!"
The authors have broken California down into the following areas: Central Coast, Greater Los Angeles, Orange County, The Inland Empire and Beyond, The Deserts, and San Diego County. At the end of each section is a monthly guide to events; seasonal events that happen regularly. Addresses, phone numbers, minimal directions and often times web sites are provided for ease of travel. They also include admission prices as well as suggestions for good family oriented restaurants.
As a resident of the Inland Empire, I was impressed with the coverage of both well-known and much lesser known places and things to do. This is my kind of guide: easy to follow, great index in back and a good price. This book is well laid-out to walk you through three stages: Part 1 gives advice on how to plan getting there and where to stay. Giving basic vacation planning strategies such as how to budget realistically, where to search on the Internet, which exits to take from highways, how to rent a car, etc., this is NOT an advertisement for specific properties or businesses but names each with the price range and outlines amenities, transportation, etc. The same is listed for restaurants in the area. This section alone will save you lots of money and exhaustion and frustration once you arrive at your dream destination. In the second section you will find each area of Disny World mapped,and a basic description of each ride or performance. There are some MUST SEE notes and for each place there is a rating of 1 - 5 for each age group from pre-schoolers to seniors. At the back of the book are trip cards so you can make notes of which attractions to do and which to skip, placing these cards in your wallet for on-site use. There is a section to help you plan what to do after dark and the final section is devoted to other attractions in the area outside Disney World. Travel with Kids: The Definitive Guide to Family Holidays Worldwide ReviewThis book has extensive information for travel with kids in almost every corner of every continent. Full of pictures, it is written in a bright, accessible style. Disappointingly, emphasis is on places they are likely to have heard of (Orlando, Italy, Australia), rather than places their parents might simply wish to take them, and on beaches and adenaline-charged activities rather than on museums and quiet activities. There is really nothing wrong with this focus, except that, to a large extent, it explains the obvious. This book also has a presumption of dysfunction about the dynamics of traveling families, and is particularly ugly in its references to teenagers. Perhaps the author is just being funny, but my wife and I read several of the descriptions and just sort of looked at each other disgustedly (i.e., we didn't laugh). The author apparently feels that the depth of a teenager's travel-savvy extends no farther than recreational shopping or finding an adrenaline-rush. Quote from the section on France: "Fashion-conscious teenage girls will enjoy browsing the shops [of Paris], and might even tolerate mum and dad tagging along-- as long as they bring their credit cards." Also, on Berlin and Amsterdam: "Of course, you probably won't get teenagers within a hundred miles of either Amsterdam or Berlin unless you tempt them with... the promise of retail heaven." On Asia: "If your teenagers are more into retail therapy than adrenaline abuse, take them to Dubai..." etc., etc., etc. The pitch of this one-note song only makes me wish for a different book geared toward families with tots/children/teens who DON'T view a family trip as an occasion to incubate brattiness. The author clearly expects much less from his readers' children than he does from his own, who are "fantastic little travelers, always happy to confront new challenges."
On a side note, it is curious how many places are simply excluded from the book, presumably because they are not as interesting to children. But isn't the purpose of the book to help parents travel with children to places where child-focused activities are more elusive? For example, there is nothing about the American Midwest -- never mind Chicago with its Sears Tower and world-famous aquarium and science museum. While several countries (such as France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey) get detailed chapters to themselves, many countries, such as Japan and Russia, are altogether excluded.Travel with Kids: The Definitive Guide to Family Holidays Worldwide OverviewTravel with Kids shows you how to get family holidays right - before it's too late and your children want to go on their own. Ask Arthur Frommer: And Travel Better, Cheaper, Smarter ReviewActually, contrary to another review I have read on this site, this book is one of the most plain-talking, no-holds-barred travel books I've ever laid my hands on. This guy isn't afraid to say stuff that could get him in trouble with the rest of the travel industry. Like this, on page 410: TripAdvisor.com is "virtually useless" and its rankings "have no value at all." On page 76, he says modern cruise ships look like they were "gigantic, metallic, orgone boxes of the sort envisioned in the 1920s by hallucinating psychologists." (That description is pretty hilarious. But then he goes on to tell you how to get a discount on one.) On p. 450, he calls for a wholesale change of guard at the Department of Homeland Security for the sake of the country's future! It's very fast-moving, with fact after fact coming right at you in between those opinions, and lots of websites worth bookmarking, so if you can't find something to use on one page, the next page is likely to help, and what's more, you get the feeling he really has tried all the things he's writing about. The book is chatty and dishy at times, and always opinionated, but no one can argue that this guy doesn't know his stuff. I don't know any other book that has all these details in one place. For example, Frommer's book mentions an airfare booking website called Yapta twice and it takes three pages to explain the ins and outs. I also have Peter Greenberg's recent book, and he gives Yapta just five lines. There's simply more meat here. Lonely Planet By the Seat of My Pants (Anthology) ReviewA good collection of travel stories. A lot of variety. Almost every story leaves you wanting to read more by that author. Many stories leave you thinking. The collection is a perfect companion on a solo trip, because the stories are short but interesting. When I finished the book, I didn't want to leave it in a hotel room. But I can think of several people who would enjoy it, so I guess I will end up buying more copies. Which I will be happy to do. (Not a big deal, but ... I wish the short bios were at the end of the stories and not at the beginning. I don't care about the author until I read the story. I will say that the book looks nice and is laid out all right, but the content is awful. The book mentions attractions and shows that were long gone (I mean years) by it's release date in late 1998. One of Disney's major resort hotels isn't even named properly in the book. There is a big difference between Coronado Springs (correct) and Colorado Springs (wrong). Anyone who has even briefly visited the hotel can pick up on the southwest/Mayan/Aztec theme and should realize that the name Colorado Springs wouldn't make sense. I think if an author is claiming to be enough of an expert on something to write a guidebook, the basic facts should be right, which they are not. Smart Packing for Today's Traveler ReviewI have been a traveler for 30 years and each time I pack, I make the same mistakes and end up with a sore back from toting to heavy a suitcase, until I read Susan's book. Her packing tips are foolproof..and I admit being the fool! However what helped me the most was her checklists. For example on page194-95, she gives the reader lists of important documents like one's medical history and information on drugs that you take daily and reminds you to make copies of all you take to leave behind with your support person, in time of emergency. Her emergency takealong medicine chest list worked for me and for once I got on the plane feeling competent on my way to Bali that I wouldnt need to see a Doc unless it was a fourstar emergency. Simple as it may seem, Susan's instructions on in-transit creature comforts, page176, saved me so much grief up during my trip. I trashed my vanity and showed up for an international flight sans makeup..and for the first time, I had sense to use lotion, waterspray and lipbalm instead and emerged energized at the end of my flight.
