Lonely Planet Bali & Lombok (Regional Guide) ReviewThis is a good guidebook and fairly accurate. In a country like Indonesia, however, things change quickly so use this book as a reference not as a bible. Do you own research and talk to other travellers. Since the LP Bali is the default travellers' guide to this region, most of the restaurants and hotels covered are not the best values. Many get a steady stream of customers just because of a good review and never bother to maintain the facilities. The best deals require a lot of footwork and bargaining! Learning some bahasa indonesia always helps. The language section is adequate but the phrasebook is much better.
Nightlife is making a big comeback with the reopening of Paddy's Reloaded (did they really need the weapons terminology?) and the return of the young aussie crowd. Check Bounty for the college age crowd, Seminyak for the posh/club crowd.
You can also avoid the moneychangers altogether by going to the BCA ATMs. Look for the ones that give you bills in 100,000 Rp denominations. You get a more reasonable maximum with these machines.
The activities sections are good, particularly the surfing one. They do a poor job of covering Lombok however, if you are planning on heading out there for an extended stay, I would recommend the LP Indonesia. Be forewarned though, the constant soliciting outside of the Gili Islands in Lombok is extremely tiresome. For scuba, skip Gili altogether and head to Flores or Sulawesi (or even back to Bali's Menjangen). Many of the sections are blasted out and the whole place is overfished.
Finally, if you want to book a boat trip to the Komodo Islands, you have a couple options, the pricey Perama boats (better and more luxurious boats) or the cheapo independent boats (very basic converted fishing boats). The second option is very very basic - you sleep on dirty mats and the snorkeling equipment doesn't work. The food is pretty good though and you do get to all the major sites with no hassle. If you don't mind all this, you can book these boats pretty much anywhere on Lombok. Top 10 Toronto (EYEWITNESS TOP 10 TRAVEL GUIDE) ReviewOver the years, I have been very pleased with travel guides by DK Publishing, but this one was a big let down. We tried several of the recommended restaurants, and they were absolute disappointments. Whoever recommended these restaurants could not have actually tried them, as they consistently reflected poor quality food, service, and hygiene. Unfortunately, the most recent edition of this guidebook available in 2008 was published in 2005, so it was outdated. Several of the recommended restaurants are now closed. This confirms that they were probably not good restaurants in the first place. I wonder if the publisher is paid to put certain restaurants on the list? If I were to compile a list of the "Top Ten" restaurants in my home town, I feel quite certain that they would still be open in three years.
As for other area attractions, the descriptions offer no real insight as to their real desirability or how long you might plan to spend at each location. There was no information on pricing for most attractions. Consequently, the book was useless in budgeting both time and money.

Frommer's Alaska 2010 (Frommer's Color Complete) ReviewAs the only state I have never visited, Alaska has been on my short list for a long time.
Generally what I look to a travel guide for is recommendations on hotels and restaurants. I have made my reservations online for many many years, looking for out of the way places and a more authentic experience. In that regard, this guide really hits the mark. Written by a Alaska native, seasoned writer of some repute and naturalist, the book is an enjoyable read and unusual, in my experience, in that it really gives you an insider's perspective. Writer Charles Wohlforth points to the most beautiful vistas and how to get there; and provides perspective on Alaska's history, it's residents (both human and wildlife,) how, when and where to approach them.
He and his team go farther than many guides in that they do not just recommend a tour or hotel, they review all of the options and explain which is best for whom. that is he covers luxury travel, economy travel, nature tours... so that you can put together an itinerary best suited to you.
The guide covers all of the things one would expect: an over view of each region and/ or city, average temperature and weather chart, a large coated pull out map as well as numerous smaller detail maps, guides to parks, tours, activities, hotels and various modes of transportation. Where he goes beyond most guides is with his knowledge of native wildlife, where to see it and how to safely approach (or conversely when to keep your distance). That said this guide would also be of interest to bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts in general.
The book is both comprehensive and relatively compact. Because of its dimensions, it is more portable than most books of this scope. That said I believe it is the only guide you would need (speaking as one who usually buys a comprehensive book for planning and a compact guide for actual travel).
The only downside I see to this book is that after reading it I do not know that I would be satisfied with a 7-14 day tour. Alaska is immense, rich with beautiful and unusual vistas, diverse cultural experiences and a wide variety of recreational activities as well. After reading this book I am no longer thinking about hopping a 7 day cruise from Seattle and think I'd like to spend some time on land, inland, and get to experience some of the Alaska that you do not get to see from a cruise boat (or tour bus).Frommer's Alaska 2010 (Frommer's Color Complete) Overview

New York (Eyewitness Travel Guides) ReviewFrom Lonely Planet to the Rough Guides, location-specific guidebooks generally seem so transient since a purchase generally depends upon an upcoming trip and soon afterward ends up in a storage box collecting dust or on craigslist for sale. There is no incentive to return to the book once the trip has ended. However, while on vacation having breakfast just last weekend in the Chelsea neighborhood, a complete stranger asked to borrow my copy of this guidebook because he wanted to give his dining companions an instant visual cue to some of the top sites to visit in New York. Rarely have I seen a book so constantly used and displayed in public without hesitation as I have with this one. I happen to be a long-time fan of the series of Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness Travel Guides as I find them unique in the travel resource field.
The Eyewitness Travel Guides are terrific both as a backpack resource and as a keepsake afterward. I have about ten of their books on my shelf, and the New York City guide is a particularly strong entry in the series since there is such a robust amount of information to cover. Thanks to its pleasing graphics and intuitive organization by neighborhood, this is one guidebook I use often even though I am quite familiar with Manhattan. Of particular use are the detailed pictorials showing animated aerial shots of neighborhoods and cut-away floor plans of heavily visited buildings like the Empire State Building and the newly renovated Museum of Modern Art. It also helps make geographic sense of neighborhoods that allow you to navigate easily through them by pointing out recommended sights.
The first part of the book presents a brief history of the city that is both interesting and useful, as events are cross-referenced to sights you would want to see there. There is a well-presented survival guide toward the end of the book that highlights important travel information as well as recommendations on where to stay, shop and eat. Moreover, there is a comprehensive street finder for Manhattan, which helps you navigate without the inconvenience of fold-out maps plus the all-important subway map. All this information is contained within a user-friendly, laminated paperback format that slips easily into backpacks and holds up well against inclement weather. Frommer's Puerto Rico (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewI've used this guide for three PR vacations, and each time I want to throw it across the hotel room. But I can't because the other guides are even worse or even less comprehensive. What's the problem with this one? The lack of description: it gives you no feel as to what makes each beach/hotel unique. Invariably every second beach is summed up vaguely as 'one of the best beaches on the island,' even if one has brownish sand and no snorkling while another "best" beach is pristine white, loaded with fish, and secluded. It's the same with hotels, too, except there's no explanation of what the mood is like there, what kind of people stay there, what the view is like, what the rooms are like, if there's a bar to hang out in after dinner, how close the beach is.... It's almost comic, except when you're trying to figure out where to spend your precious time and money.
Another frustrating problem is that no one took the time to edit this guide. One beach or hotel will be mentioned in two (or three) places in entirely different tones, so it's hard to guess whether a place is just wacky or dirty (or, in the instance of La Parguera, too polluted to swim in one mention; just fine in another). Also, uninspired writing means a breathtaking mountain retreat like the Casa Grande Hotel in Utuado comes across as completely unremarkable and possibly worth skipping. Can't the writers come out and say "This place is great" or, if necessary, "This place is a dump?" A reader might wonder if these guys visited anything but bloated resorts at all. Fodor's Puerto Rico, 6th Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) ReviewHaving just returned from Puerto Rico, I thought now would be the best time to review this book. Fodor's did a good job with some of their recommendations, but other areas were disappointing. The Old San Juan section is great with a guided walking tour and some great restaurant selections, but outside of the city, be cautious of their suggestions. Although they describe some of the more rural towns as "quaint, seaside villages", we found nothing of the sort in Fajardo, Luquillo or Pinones for example. Although we didn't get to the west side of the island, what was described on the east side by the book and what was actually there are two very different things. Lonely Planet Nova Scotia, New Brunswick & Prince Edward Island (Regional Travel Guide) ReviewThis thing saved my butt last year.
I took a trip to Boston, and drove from Boston to Inverness, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island.
I went the scenic route, cutting through Maine to Calais / St Stephen, where I crossed the border into New Brunswick.
I had an atlas, I had maps, I had been studying maps of the entire Eastern seaboard for months and months. This was a solo journey so I wanted to be prepared. I decided to get the Lonely Planet guide on a whim. I figured I couldn't have too much information!
The thing about the Maritime Provinces that outsiders don't know, is that it's nearly impossible to get any good information on them from the conventional sources (internet, etc). Enter Lonely Planet guides.
The biggest way this book helped me was when I was in Saint John, NB which is where I stayed overnight between Boston and Cape Breton.
First of all, Saint John was surprisingly cute. I wish I would have had more time there. Secondly and more importantly, on the way through to CB, I stayed at a slightly crappy motel just outside of town which while not terrible, was not fantastic and I didn't feel entirely safe (just paranoia I think, but still...) That motel was NOT listed in the book, FYI. So on the way back, I decided to look elsewhere - in my book! Lo and behold, I find in the book the contact info for the summer dorm rental program at the University. Why yes, I'll gladly shell out $20 for a safe, clean room! I just needed a place to sleep after all, and it was perfect.
The book also gave me some great info on tiny little St Stephen, where I had a few minutes to stop before crossing the border, and I hit a chocolate shop recommended in the book. Divine. Wouldn't have had a clue without my guide book.
I'm quite sure my journey would have been entirely different, and less enjoyable without this thing.
Lonely Planet books are priceless. Lonely Planet Andalucia (Regional Travel Guide) ReviewI was traveling with three friends to Andalucia and we used the guide daily. The information that it gave on sites like the Alcazar in Seville or the Mezquita in Cordoba were invaluable in placing the monuments and cities in time, context, and importance. All of us, including the non-history-geeks of the group, loved the explanations and information on the sites, and someone was always asking "who had the book" at many points throughout the day.
The guide was very nice to have along when we were looking for places to eat. We ate at least once a day at restaurants that were recommended and we were not disappointed at any meal.
The map and distance guide at the beginning of the book were quite helpful in planning our trips as we stayed in the vicinity of Malaga and drove back and forth to Seville, Cordoba, and Gibraltar. They came in handy on the way back from Seville when we decided to detour to Ronda to see the Puente Nueve. The maps also helped us decide where to park once we got into a city or provide us with directions when we didn't have a larger, more detailed map available to us.
The only thing that we had a problem with was that the areas covered by the maps were too small for detailed driving instructions. However, it's a guide so that's to be expected.
