However, after I started reading it I realized it was really a very good condensed book chock full of information and one doesn't have to go to the links in order to enjoy this book. Frommer's Santa Fe, Taos and Albuquerque ReviewWe used this guide to plan a couple of trips to Santa Fe and in and around Taos, and were very happy with the results. The book starts with a general introduction to northern New Mexico, covering history, art, architecture and so on. Then there's a chapter on general visitor information for the region, and a section for foreign visitors. The remaining chapters are:
Getting to Know Santa Fe; Where to Stay in Santa Fe; Where to Dine in Santa Fe; What to See & Do in Santa Fe; Santa Fe Shopping; Santa Fe After Dark; Excursions from Santa Fe; Getting to Know Taos; Where to Stay in Taos; Where to Dine in Taos; What to See & Do in Taos; Albuquerque
The organization is good, with the hotels, for example, clearly broken out by price range ("Very Expensive", "Expensive", "Moderate" and "Inexpensive"). But the real value of the book is the author's candid evaluations. We've been burned in the past by guide books that gave every establishment a glowing review, so it was pleasant to use this book to find lunch in Taos one day last month. Here's some of what we found:
Ogelvie's Bar and Grill: "The food here is not flavorful, and the atmosphere is dated"
Eske's Brew Pub: "The crowd is local, a few people sitting at the bar . . . . At times it can be a rowdy place, but mostly it's just fun, lots of ski patrollers and mountain guides . . . ."
Outback in Taos: "My kayaking buddies always go here after a day on the river. That will give you an idea of the level of informality (very), as well as the quality of the food and beer (great) and the size of the portions (large)."
It's clear that the author really loves the area, and knows it inside out; we went to eight or ten places (hotels and restaurants) that she recommends, and didn't regret a single one.Frommer's Santa Fe, Taos and Albuquerque OverviewWith its abundance of cultural offerings, outdoor adventures, and fantastic shopping, northern New Mexico has something for everyone. Fodor's Santa Fe, Taos & Albuquerque, 2nd Edition (Travel Guide) ReviewFodor's "Santa Fe, Taos & Albuquerque" is one of their best guidebooks. I used it extensively while planning a recent trip to New Mexico, and the information and opinions within it were generally right on the money. While I refered to it for planning my lodging during the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, it really proved its worth during an extended road trip to Santa Fe and Los Alamos.
The advice was always cogent, and practical tips were very helpful, especially when it came to getting oriented on Santa Fe's notoriously confusing streets. Thanks to the book's recommendation, I made reservations at The Bishop's Lodge, a captivating and beautiful historical property founded by Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy 150 years ago. I appreciated the guide's putting the property in historical context, and was delighted at the off-the-beaten-path tip. Likewise, the guide's emphasis on the important art scene in Santa Fe led me to numerous galleries and shops; all the things that it recommended for someone of my interests were well-covered and accurate. Various other advice either on its own or as part of the great "A Good Walk" features, was useful, particularly regarding restaurants, shops, and the area around the Santa Fe Plaza, including the La Fonda Hotel (with it's wonderful lobby and shops,) the beautiful St. Francis Cathedral (with its truly beautiful stained glass of many different styles,) and the quaint Loretto Chapel (with it's unusual staircase and interesting gift shop.)
Although I didn't go to Taos during this trip, I did go to Los Alamos, which was well-covered and is prettier than I expected. There are many things to do in this small town, but the museums related to the atomic bomb development that occurred there are most captivating. The Los Alamos Historical Museum was especially interesting (and it's free!) and deserves more detail in the book along with the adjacent Fuller Lodge. The museum is located on "Bathtub Row" and even though the guide doesn't recommend it, it's interesting to take the museum's walking tour down Bathtub Row. At the intersection of Bathtub Row and Peach Street sits J. Robert Oppenheimer's former home (it's private property,) and returning to the museum you pass ancient Puebloan structures that date back hundreds of years. The book is correct in noting this incongruity of ancient and atomic cultures juxtaposed in such a small space. Use caution when visiting the larger and newer Bradbury Science Museum, as the museum has some unusual operating hours, which are correctly listed in this guide.
This is a very well done travel guide, and I made extensive use of it both planning my trip to New Mexico, and actually traveling the area. My primary interests were balloons, the artistic scene in Santa Fe, and historical sites and museums. Insiders' Guide to Santa Fe, 5th (Insiders' Guide Series) ReviewSanta Fe is a relatively small city and its key attractions are pretty much established, so that it is not absolutely necessary to buy a new guide every year -- a guide even a couple of years old is easily updated from materials freely available online or from the City adminstration by mail or at many locations in the City itself.
Nonetheless I really enjoy reading what people who live in or near Santa Fe emphasize in their guides, and I pick up a new one every year. The Insiders' Guide to Santa Fe, 5th edition by Nicky Leach is a great contender for current information, covering all of the highlights, and adding a personal interpretation that makes the writing come alive in a very satisfying way.
Leach has worked on at least three versions of this guide, in two earlier versions as part of a team and in this version as the major editor. She lives in a valley north of town, and clearly knows and loves the city. Her bio from her webpage gives you a bit of insight into some of the personal elements you can expect to find here, mixed in the solid information you need to enjoy Santa Fe:
"I am currently at work on a guidebook entitled Day Trips From Albuquerque: Getaway Ideas For the Local Traveler for The Globe Pequot Press, due to be published in May 2010. [My] Specialties include: US National Parks, travel, the history, geology, and sociology of the US West, nature essays, the environment, and self-help, but my interests are broad and I'm happy to consider many other topics.

If you are in the market for a good guidebook to Santa Fe, consider either this volume or Compass American Guides: Santa Fe, 5th Edition originally by Lawrence W. Cheek and seamlessly updated by Andrew Collins. Either guide will meet your needs beautifully.

Under the Color of Law ReviewGood news for crime fiction fans. Michael McGarrity has issued the sixth book in his highly acclaimed series featuring old friend and protagonist Kevin Kerney as the new police chief of Santa Fe, New Mexico and about to be embroiled in a mystery that includes murders, computer espionage and national security. For readers that have not read McGarrity's previous novels, be aware that many now believe he rivals Tony Hillerman with his highly readable style and unique ability to combine his knowledge of both the landscape and culture of the American southwest with plot and storyline that have few equals. Kerney, after having been deputy chief for the New Mexico State Police, is persuaded to postpone retirement and accept a job as police chief of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The department is in disarray and less than professional; Kerney's wife is pregnant and intent on pursuing her military career; and Kerney simply cannot seem to stay away from police work he so enjoys. Thus, he accepts the job in Santa Fe that is not known as a high crime area and keeps him close to the land and people he knows and understands so well. A pretty good setup for someone that wants to keep his hand in law enforcement but not as demanding and dangerous as former jobs...one would think! The story begins with the murder of the estranged wife of a U.S. Ambassador in her Santa Fe home. At first it appears to be a crime not unlike others Kerney has investigated in his career, senseless to be sure but not without clues and witnesses. Ah, but the plot thickens. Just as Kerney begins his investigation he is notified that a FBI anti-terrorism team is enroute to Santa Fe and will take over the investigation. It seems that national security might be involved which requires the expertise of the feds. A bit unusual to be sure but Kerney initially discontinues investigation and steps into the background while the FBI takes charge. True to form the case turns bizarre with the feds sanitizing the crime scene, potential witnesses disappearing, and ultimately what appears to Kerney to be fake evidence is used to clear and close the case. Suspecting a cover-up Kerney begins his own unofficial investigation which leads to evidence of a covert cover-up involving U.S. intelligence agencies, dot-com companies, and rogue federal agents. He is placed under surveillance, threatened, and forced to watch as a number of murders are committed, including his own officers, in the name of national security. It also appears he is on the hit list. This is McGarrity at his best. The story moves at a fast pace, is highly readable, and eerily believable given both the current climate in this country and the unique talent of the author to place the reader in a time and place he obviously knows so well. The description of the Southwest landscape combined with both a believable plot and characters makes this a must read for mystery fans or anyone seeking a good read. I reviewed one of his previous books, The Judas Judge, and noted "He knows the territory and it shows." It is still true in this book. Highly recommended.Under the Color of Law Overview
