Fun with the Family in Southern California: Hundreds of Ideas for Day Trips with the Kids ReviewAs a mom of 3 young ones under age 11, I am always looking for things to do to avoid the "mom, were boorrreeeddd!" problem. I found this book at first at my local library and was so impressed I thought "I HAVE to have it!"
The authors have broken California down into the following areas: Central Coast, Greater Los Angeles, Orange County, The Inland Empire and Beyond, The Deserts, and San Diego County. At the end of each section is a monthly guide to events; seasonal events that happen regularly. Addresses, phone numbers, minimal directions and often times web sites are provided for ease of travel. They also include admission prices as well as suggestions for good family oriented restaurants.
As a resident of the Inland Empire, I was impressed with the coverage of both well-known and much lesser known places and things to do. This is my kind of guide: easy to follow, great index in back and a good price. Moon Northern California (Moon Handbooks) ReviewIn general, Money Magazine's comment that Moon Handbooks are "America's finest travel guidebook series" remains true. But the decimation of several recent editions is reducing the guides' usefulness and value. The 5th edition of Northern California is nearly half the size of the 4th edition and using more concise language in the new edition cannot compensate. Take just three examples. The previous edition provided detailed descriptions of the five tours at Hearst Castle(Hearst San Simeon). The new edition contains two lines on two tours. The new edition briefly mentions the possibility of hiking to Tall Trees Grove in Redwood national Park. But it leaves out any reference to the permit parking system that enables visitors to start a hike near the grove. The previous edition described the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco--the finest of its kind in America--in a special section. The new edition does not even mention the Asian Art Museum. I still use Moon Handbooks and appreciate the fact that their information is usually kept up to date. But asking travelers to accept a 50% loss of information in this guide for a reduction in price of under 10% ($2) is outrageous.Moon Northern California (Moon Handbooks) OverviewWriter and native Californian Liz Hamill Scott covers the best that Northern California has to offer, from day hikes through awe-inspiring Yosemite Valley to rest and relaxation at the spas and vineyards of Wine Country. Moon Northern California gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.
