The Rough Guide to Belize 4 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) ReviewI got this book on a reccomendation from the Toucan Trail, A budget traveler's online guide to Belize. I have to say that this is the most comprehensive guide for vacationers that I have ever seen. I had to wait a while for the most receent edition, but it was worth it. Topics that hadn't even occured to me to research are included here (thank gawd!). The book even covers traveling into Guatemala to vist the ruins at Tikal. If you only buy one guide for your trip to Belize, this should be the one.The Rough Guide to Belize 4 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Overview

The Rough Guide to Costa Rica 5 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Reviewbuy the lonely planet. the rough guide is a poor substitute.
this book is basically missing all of the most essential things that i look for in a guidebook. the maps are poorly done and lack detail. the maps also have very limited coverage. there is no pricing information, which means in order to compare places you have to take an extra step of actually calling to figure out how much they charge. the index is poorly organized. and it doesn't list distances from one place to another so you have to cross-reference a bunch of different travel times (usually only by bus, totally ignoring people who drive themselves) in order to get an estimate of travel time. i'm the kind of person who likes to create his own travel experience and using this book made me feel like i was groping in the dark at times.
maybe all of this is an effort by the authors to differentiate themselves from the lonely planet by making their guide a little "rougher." if that was their intent, they definitely succeeded. unfortunately for the authors, when someone is in a foreign country alone with only a guidebook to tell him where to stay, what to eat and how to get around, he needs his guidebook to be "comprehensive" and "accurate" rather than rough."The Rough Guide to Costa Rica 5 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Overview
Make the most of your time with The Rough Guide to Costa Rica, the definitive companion to this peaceful destination. The full-colour section introduces Costa Rica's highlights, from the spectacular sunsets at the Pacific coast beach of Sámara to taking a boat ride passed the luxuriant tropical vegetation and colourful wooden houses that line the Tortuguero Canal. Using informed accounts, clue-up on all the remote beaches, active volcanoes and wildlife-rich parks, plus all the unforgettable sites of the capital city, San Jose. The guide features practical tips for exploring the outdoors from trekking the lush cloudforest reserve at Monteverde to rafting down the rivers of Valle Central. There are plenty of practical tips on all the best accommodation, transportation, shops, bars and clubs and an insightful background on Costa Rica's wildlife, politics and culture. Explore the best of Costa Rica with the clearest maps of any guide.

The Rough Guide to East Coast Australia 1 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) ReviewThis is one of the finest guidebooks I have used. The authors write concisely, to the point and with some humor as well. Content is comprehensive -- they have really put some mileage on their shoes and gotten far down into the details for us. Organization is functional and easy to follow, or to skip around in the book. Authors use to advantage many insert boxes to highlight special content or discussions of places of outstanding interest (e.g., Great Barrier Reef). Users should be aware that the geographic coverage of the content is a fairly narrow band all along the east coast of Victoria, NSW and Queensland. What is covered is covered extremely well. But if you want or need detailed information on areas inland from the coast, you must use the internet or buy a guidebook with comprehensive coverage. The Rough Guide to East Coast Australia 1 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Overview

The Rough Guide to New Zealand 6 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) ReviewI fancy myself somewhat of an expert in New Zealand travel, with numerous lengthy trips there, including two group trips that I organized and led. I have used DK, Lonely Planet, Let's Go, and Rough Guide, and there is absolutely no question which is best. Rough Guide. It is more thorough and more intelligently written than any of the others, and its graphics have gradually improved as well. Though not as glossy as DK or as famous as Lonely Planet, Rough Guide provides the traveler/reader with the best understanding of New Zealand. If in doubt, go to a bookstore and read the descriptions of a given place in Lonely Planet, and then in Rough Guide. It will be obvious which is better. I recently purchased the recent editions of both Rough Guide and Lonely Planet (both published Sept 2006) but have decided that it won't be necessary to bring both on my next trip to New Zealand. Rough Guide has everything found in Lonely Planet and much, much more. Highly recommend. The Rough Guide to New Zealand 6 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Overview
The Rough Guide to New Zealand is the essential guidebook to this spectacular destination, with exhaustive practical information, a full-colour introduction and hundreds of restaurant and hotel listings. Make the most of the astonishing variety of New Zealand, from the craggy coastlines and sweeping beaches, to the bubbling volcanic mud pools and fast-flowing rivers. More detailed than its competitors, this completely updated guide features colour sections highlighting Maori culture, adventure sports and the country's unique ecology. Catering for every traveller, from wine buffs to Lord of the Rings freaks, The Rough Guide to New Zealand is heaving with historical and cultural detail and is packed with new maps and more photos – it even finds time to teach you the world-famous haka!

Frommer's Puerto Rico (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewI've used this guide for three PR vacations, and each time I want to throw it across the hotel room. But I can't because the other guides are even worse or even less comprehensive. What's the problem with this one? The lack of description: it gives you no feel as to what makes each beach/hotel unique. Invariably every second beach is summed up vaguely as 'one of the best beaches on the island,' even if one has brownish sand and no snorkling while another "best" beach is pristine white, loaded with fish, and secluded. It's the same with hotels, too, except there's no explanation of what the mood is like there, what kind of people stay there, what the view is like, what the rooms are like, if there's a bar to hang out in after dinner, how close the beach is.... It's almost comic, except when you're trying to figure out where to spend your precious time and money.
Another frustrating problem is that no one took the time to edit this guide. One beach or hotel will be mentioned in two (or three) places in entirely different tones, so it's hard to guess whether a place is just wacky or dirty (or, in the instance of La Parguera, too polluted to swim in one mention; just fine in another). Also, uninspired writing means a breathtaking mountain retreat like the Casa Grande Hotel in Utuado comes across as completely unremarkable and possibly worth skipping. Can't the writers come out and say "This place is great" or, if necessary, "This place is a dump?" A reader might wonder if these guys visited anything but bloated resorts at all. PR deserves better and I certainly expected better from Frommer's.Frommer's Puerto Rico (Frommer's Complete Guides) Overview

Fodor's Puerto Rico, 6th Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) ReviewHaving just returned from Puerto Rico, I thought now would be the best time to review this book. Fodor's did a good job with some of their recommendations, but other areas were disappointing. The Old San Juan section is great with a guided walking tour and some great restaurant selections, but outside of the city, be cautious of their suggestions. Although they describe some of the more rural towns as "quaint, seaside villages", we found nothing of the sort in Fajardo, Luquillo or Pinones for example. Although we didn't get to the west side of the island, what was described on the east side by the book and what was actually there are two very different things. However, the San Juan section and the El Yunque section made it worthwhile.Fodor's Puerto Rico, 6th Edition (Full-color Travel Guide) Overview
