Pecan Gap: A Jake Somers Novel ReviewAs I read Pecan Gap by Don Castle, I couldn't figure out if I was reading a mystery, a murder mystery or a romance novel! This book has it all starting with Jake Sanders who is an ex-cop who owns a PI firm and is from Pecan Gap. Jake is investigating murders or friends and family as well as himself, as well as the mystery of the bones he finds which are then stolen. If you like true crime and mystery, you will like this book, it has it all. The book is very interesting and a good read.Pecan Gap: A Jake Somers Novel Overview

Keep Safe: 101 Ways to Enhance Your Safety and Protect Your Family ReviewThe unfortunate thing about "common sense is that it's so common it is often taken for granted. That is precisely what this book will prevent. I don't know how many times it happened but as I read this book I found myself repeatedly saying to myself, "What a great idea!" The suggestions in this book are current, realistic, and easy to apply. Things like having your child carry one of your business cards on his or her person, or getting to know by name the bus driver who takes your child to school each day. They are simple, plain, and the kinds of things that will prevent the sort of tragedy that results in one saying "If I'd only done this..." Beyond that, the suggestions are not the kinds of things that will keep you locked behind closed doors. There's nothing paranoid here. Just common sense. "Keep Safe" is well written and easy to read. It has clearly been well researched by two authors who have spent their careers in the field of public safety. Having been in the law enforcement field for eleven years myself, I recommend "Keep Safe" to anyone who wants to live more safely, and thus more fully, in a dangerous world.Keep Safe: 101 Ways to Enhance Your Safety and Protect Your Family OverviewThis potentially lifesaving guide explains how to avoid crimes and dangerous situations through forethought and planning. The authors offer easy-to-implement suggestions from public safety experts, law enforcement officers, and security specialists for protecting family, home, car, and office.

Desperate Highway ReviewDesperate Highway
This book is an amazing true story of a man that didn't believe in anything or anyone. He lived his life in a manner that became challenging just to get through the day without the prospect of being locked up or worse. God put him through the ultimate test that would easily break any normal human being. This man is a true inspiration to anyone that is facing tough times; whether it be incarceration or otherwise. Props to the author, Jesse Stretch. Awesome read! Should be made into a movie!Desperate Highway Overview

Inside The DEA ReviewA fascinating look at DEA operations from 25 year veteran Tom Clifford. The main thrust of the story revolves around "Operation Green Ice," wherein he penetrates various high level crime organisations lured by his front company, TAVA, to launder their money through DEA controlled accounts! It's a good book but the fact is that I became very pedantic soon into this read, scrutinizing every detail instead of just enjoying it.
Tom Clifford's technical skills as an author seem somewhat lacking. I've wondered, given the inconsistencies, if this book wasn't re-written or severely edited. For example, the first part of the book is about his early history as a narc and it's told with very little dialogue, as one might expect. Relative to the rest of the book, it seems out of place, almost as if the author is "getting it out of the way". Then slowly the story morphs into a novel with plenty of dialogue and the author becomes near omnipresent. Little nagging details arise. The conversations aren't always easy to follow. Typos and editing errors occur regularly: 'where' shows up as 'were," 'mac' (a type of machine pistol) becomes 'mach', and in one case a sentence interrupts itself half way through and proceeds to repeat itself. Worse, the author mentions that London is 5 hours ahead of the U.S. West Coast. Later, he refers to a Sig Sauer pistol as having a manual safety which is incorrect except in the case of the uncommon P210 model which, given the context, it probably wasn't (some newer models are another matter). And most heinously, in my opinion, he seems to be under the impression that Sig Sauers don't have an internal safety which prevents the firing pin from causing an accidental discharge (i.e. from dropping it). Minor? Maybe. But I wouldn't expect a trained DEA agent to make that mistake. And effortless reading is impossible with sentences as awkward as this gem: "I had to do some quick thinking before the management wrote me out of my own script so I used that my school days 'creative and imaginative' qualities to rectify the situation."
All and all it's not terribly written and the actual events portrayed are interesting enough to coax one away from becoming too hung up on shortcomings. Still, I felt it was written by a person who after writing internal memos and after-action reports for 25 years thought they'd try their hand at a memoir.
Bottom line: recommended for anyone interested in the subject matter.
Inside The DEA OverviewA crime novel of intrigue, deceit and treachery. This true story follows the twenty five year career of a Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent from rookie on the streets of New York City to senior manager of DEA's money laundering undercover operations on three continents. His story parallels his professional life with the growth of cocaine use in the United States and the proliferation of its trade into a multi-billion international industry. Whether it be the Mafia, La Costra Nostra, the Colombian Cartels, Mexican Syndicates or the Russian Mob, Tom Clifford's undercover shell corporations and financial storefront businesses penetrated into the inner financial world of the Drug Kingpins. By establishing undercover store fronts in different cities in the United States, Canada and Europe, the undercover operations were the largest enterprises established by the United States government to counteract the money laundering activities of organized crime. Clifford proves that the globalization of crime is here and the cooperation between different national crime organizations forebodes a dark vision for our social, economic and political systems. The book contains lessons and strategies from the failed War on Drugs that need to be modernized for our present War on Terror.

Greystone's Secret: Suspenseful Tale of Efforts to Address Soundness of Thoroughbred Race Horses Review
This very impressive first novel is riveting fiction, but it also is a story that sets the reader down smartly in the midst of the exclusive thoroughbred horse racing world. I found it to be my favorite kind of novel--one that both entertains and (painlessly) informs.

The mystery is indeed reminiscent of the late Dick Francis, whose novels about crime and horse racing are great on both points, as is "Greystone's Secret." The hero, Nathan Hunter, is a solid man of integrity, the kind I knew growing up in the Bluegrass of Kentucky. He is so good that you root for him to get to the bottom of the malice that threatens the family who have been like family to him and the wife he loves so much. In the beginning, you don't quite realize the extent of that malice, but it unfolds in horrifying detail as you read on. By the middle of the book, you are living in the horse world, and you don't want to leave.

But when you do reluctantly leave that world, you take with you a deeper understanding of the dangers to thoroughbreds and what might be done to protect these glorious animals.
Greystone's Secret: Suspenseful Tale of Efforts to Address Soundness of Thoroughbred Race Horses OverviewNathan Hunter does not believe in coincidences-a broken stirrup leather, untied mooring line, Meg Callahan's incredulous fall in a top equestrian event, horses testing positive for illegal substances, and the suspicious barn fire which claimed the life of Meg's grandfather. Then things get worse, confirming his beliefs. Sited on the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay and the outlet of the Susquehanna River, the historic town of Havre de Grace, Maryland was once home to a nationally acclaimed racetrack nicknamed "The Graw". Little did Nathan Hunter know when he first visited the Callahan dairy farm nearby, that what lay buried at the old track would be the key to unraveling a series of sinister events that had already claimed the life of one Callahan and several of their Thoroughbreds. Nathan Hunter's dreams of one day improving the breed of the Thoroughbred horse for soundness are encouraged by Andrew Callahan-a strong, charismatic, dairy farmer who provides Nathan with the father figure he never knew. With Liz, a sharp shooting southern belle as his wife, Nathan is able to overcome his infatuation for Callahan's gifted equestrian daughter, Meg, and-with the help of Callahan resources-pursue his goal.Unfortunately, because of his relationship with the Callahans, someone seems bent on seeing that Nathan's dreams never become reality. When a fire meant to kill Andrew and his son, Eric, destroys the Callahan horse barn and leads to the discovery of a secret hideout for slaves, valuable documents of grandfather Callahan are found which point to ominous acts by a top racing and breeding farm to ruin competition at all costs-including murder. In their efforts to prove the merit of the elder Callahan's breeding program, Nathan, Eric, Meg and Liz become the targets of the same forces suspected of murdering Eric's grandfather; disaster threatens them from Ireland, through Havre de Grace, and right into Professor Nathan Hunter's classroom in Lexington, Kentucky. Although the story is fictional, it is unique in that the author introduces factual data and some basic research to allow the reader to think critically about current practices in racing and breeding Thoroughbreds which may be contributing to breakdowns.Attention is given to Artificial Insemination-not now recognized by The Jockey Club-as a means to assist breed improvement.

White Sky, Black Ice (Nathan Active Mysteries) ReviewThis book is a flawless gem! Born in a native village but raised in a big city, a young Alaskan State Trooper is posted to the town where he was born. He is faced with solving a puzzling series of suicides while trying to balance himself between two cultures. It's a corking good mystery and placed in a genuine Alaskan setting.
I was a Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal in Alaska during its final territorial and early statehood years. What impressed me most about this book was its absolute authenticity. The natives, the way they live, their unique speech patterns, the land they live in, and the climate they endure are all true to life. Just as realistic are the problems facing a police officer in the rural areas of Alaska.
WHITE SKY, BLACK ICE turned back the clock for me and I felt right at home, page after page. Read it. You'll learn more about the real Alaska from this book than from any guided tour!White Sky, Black Ice (Nathan Active Mysteries) Overview

Forever Open, Clear, and Free: The Struggle for Chicago's Lakefront ReviewHere is the story the subtitle suggests: Chicagoans gradually realized that the lands fronting Lake Michigan were more than mere wastelands to be utilized variously by industrialists and conventioneers, and this realization led citizens from A. Montgomery Ward down to the plainest of the plain to do battle with a series of regimes which seemed to have a very odd construction of the phrase, from the city charter, "forever open, free and clear". It is the people, not the government of Chicago, whom we should thank that parts of Grant, Jackson, and Lincoln Parks are still "open, free and clear".
Beyond her immediate theme, however, Lois Wille has written an excellent concise introduction to the history of Chicago, which will especially appeal to those who approach history from the viewpoint of non-conformism. And in a city like Chicago, you're either part of the Machine or a non-conformist.
Lois Wille was a colleague of Mike Royko, all the way from the Chicago Daily News days. She has all of his creativity and productive skepticism, and, in her own way, did just as much to worry and afflict the destructive establishmentarians who by fair means and foul seem to wind up governing the City of Chicago.Forever Open, Clear, and Free: The Struggle for Chicago's Lakefront OverviewOf the thirty miles of Lake Michigan shoreline within the city limits of Chicago, twenty-four miles is public park land. The crown jewels of its park system, the lakefront parks bewitch natives and visitors alike with their brisk winds, shady trees, sandy beaches, and rolling waves. Like most good things, the protection of the lakefront parks didn't come easy, and this book chronicles the hard-fought and never-ending battles Chicago citizens have waged to keep them "forever open, clear, and free."Illustrated with historic and contemporary photographs, Wille's book tells how Chicago's lakefront has survived a century of development. The story serves as a warning to anyone who thinks the struggle for the lakefront is over, or who takes for granted the beauty of its public beaches and parks. "A thoroughly fascinating and well-documented narrative which draws the reader into the sights, smells and sounds of Chicago's story. . . . Everyone who cares about the development of land and its conservation will benefit from reading Miss Wille's book."—Daniel J. Shannon, Architectural Forum "Not only good reading, it is also a splendid example of how to equip concerned citizens for their necessary participation in the politics of planning and a more livable environment."—Library Journal

The Shot ReviewAt this point, I have read all of Philip Kerr's in-print works with the exception of the Berlin Noir trilogy (which I have but have not yet read). "The Shot" ranks about average among those works; it's pretty good but doesn't have either the deepness of thought exhibited by "A Philosophical Investigation" or the sheer energetic violence of "The Grid."
The plot, such as can be described in a short review, has been adequately set forth in other reviews: essentially, the anti-hero, Tom Jefferson, is a former U.S. marine turned hitman who in 1960 accepts a contract from the Mob and the CIA to kill Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro. That is, until he learns that President-elect Kennedy slept with his wife. All of a sudden, Jefferson is off to kill Kennedy, and the Mob is in the strange position of having to work to protect Kennedy, whom they helped to elect by rigging the election in exchange for calling off the government dogs.
The fact that we know that Kennedy wasn't assassinated in 1960 actually doesn't affect one's enjoyment of the book, because Kerr does a good job of moving the plot along, and because his (for the most part) meticulous research about events in 1960 creates a feeling of verisimilitude. [Someone should tell Kerr that it's the Second Amendment, not the First Amendment, that allegedly guarantees the right to bear arms.]
One gets the feeling that Kerr's spark for writing his novels is something along the lines of "What if . . ." So, we have: (1) What if we could identify a physical characteristic linked to serial killers ("A Philosophical Investigation"); (2) What if there was a building run by a psychopathic supercomputer ("The Grid"); (3) What if there was a supercontagious blood-borne virus for which there was a cure, but the rich purposefully rationed the cure ("The Second Angel"); (4) What if I [Philip Kerr] tried to write a novel like Elmore Leonard ("A Five-Year Plan"); and (5) What if I [Kerr] tried to write a novel like Michael Crichton ("Esau")?
Along those lines, "The Shot" seems to have been inspired by two separate lines of thought: What if I [Kerr] tried to write a novel about an anti-hero like Patricia Highsmith's Tom Ripley; and what if I [Kerr] tried to write a Kennedy conspiracy novel?
"The Shot" was compelling enough that I read the last 150 pages in a single sitting. But if you haven't read Kerr before, I would suggest starting with "A Philosophical Investigation" or "The Grid," depending on your sensibilities. The Shot Overview

Beyond Recognition ReviewThis fourth book in Pearson's Seattle based detective novel, BEYOND RECOGNITION, kept me hook from the very first chapter. For anyone who calls the Pacific Northwest home, Pearson's books are realistic. It was difficult to second guess each new turn and twist Pearson has planned for Lou Bodt and Daphne Matthews. His continued development of character personalities is great. The characters grow with each new book and there is just the right mix of new people too. The aronist angle was well developed and believable. The only complaint is the book was to long, much longer than his earlier books. I would have enjoyed BEYOND RECOGNITION if it had been about 75% of the pages. Still I would recommend the entire series to everyone living the Pacific Northwest.Beyond Recognition Overview

The Revenge Encyclopedia ReviewRevenge Encyclopedia, is full of many tips that would cost alot of money to buy in other books. However, other books take the time to explain how not to get caught.
What am I saying... This can be a dangerous book if given to the worng person, AKA someone with no common sense. However if it's quantity not quality you're looking for, these pages have about 1000 ticks and pranks. Some are so cruel I wouldn't use them on my worst enemy. I would suggest for those who want to be more careful to buy George Haydukes books as most of the pranks came from him.
PS... Printed really cheaply.... book is thick and large. Not easily concealed. Bad choice for production if you want to conceal this book. It's about the size of a relatively think coloring book. The print is off center, top of the word is ahead of the bottom of the word. I don't feel it was worth the price as for quality but quantity was worth every penny. If only they were less cheap and printed it in a more well rounded way...
The Revenge Encyclopedia OverviewThis is the mother of all revenge books! You'd have to buy more than 25 books to get all the wit and wisdom contained in this compilation from the best of Paladin's revenge books. Don't be fooled by cheap imitators that claim to know how to get even. Paladin is still your revenge source when you need to even the score with nosy neighbors, bungling bureaucrats, snarly clerks or other pests. For entertainment purposes only.

The Threat Matrix: The FBI at War in the Age of Global Terror ReviewI, too, heard the NPR Diane Rehm interview with this author yesterday. I downloaded the sample and immediately started reading it. I just downloaded the book on my Kindle and can hardly put it down! I'm not a fan of nonfiction books, but this reads like a better-than Tom Clancy book. The memories of the Germany-hosted Olympics where the Israeli athletes were mowed down by Palestine terrorists and then the Southern Airlines terror of having to fly back and forth from USA to Cuba are fully described in the early chapters of The Threat Matrix. What an awakening to terror from the "gangsta" days of J.Edgar Hoover!! This book is going to fly off the shelves and into the Kindles when the accolades get out!
Thank you, Amazon, for making it immediately available!!The Threat Matrix: The FBI at War in the Age of Global Terror OverviewThe Threat Matrix is the story of a small group of FBI agents who believed that they could confront a new generation of international terrorists like al Qaeda without sacrificing America's moral high ground. At the heart of this classic good versus evil battle are decades of tensions between the FBI and the CIA, which repeatedly fell short as America's eyes overseas.Given unprecedented access, thousands of pages of once secret documents, and hundreds of interviews, Garrett M. Graff takes us inside the FBI and its attempt to protect America. From the corridors of the Hoover Building to the cells of Gitmo and the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan, Graff tells the true story of how a generation of FBI agents taught themselves to confront threats no one had ever seen before. Brilliantly reported and suspensefully told, The Threat Matrix peers into the darkest corners of this secret war and will change your view of the FBI forever.

Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob ReviewAt first it seems like pure fiction: One of Boston's most notorious mobsters, who also happens to be the brother of one of Massachusetts' most powerful politicians, spends more than a decade as a secret informant for the FBI. And, using his informant status as a shield, he grows his criminal empire and commits just about every crime on the books, including murder. As incredible as it sounds, it's all true and it's all here, and it's better than fiction. This is a powerfully written narrative by two prize-winning investigative reporters who covered the story and revealed some of its most dramatic elements. By combining their powerful reporting skills with rich writing flair, Lehr and O'Neill bring readers into the heart of darkness. They show how a relationship that began among children in the housing projects of South Boston evolved into a corrupt deal among dangerous adults that ultimately humiliated the nation's top law-enforcement agency and extended the reign of some of the very mobsters the FBI was supposed to eradicate. The book moves seamlessly from the streets and storerooms of Boston, to the corridors of political power, to the ornate federal courthouse where the deal comes crashing down.Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob Overview

Moonlight Mile: A Kenzie and Gennaro Novel ReviewHaving enjoyed all of Lehane's books and being a particulary big fan of the Kenzie-Gennaro mysteries (especially Gone, Baby, Gone), I couldn't wait to read Moonlight Mile to catch up on the lives of my old friends. I'm sure most other readers who are big fans of Lehane's books and of this series will feel compelled to read this sequel to Gone, Baby, Gone, which takes place twelve years later. However, let me forewarn you that after reading this book you are likely to feel disappointed and a bit sorry to have gone back to visit Patrick, Angie, Bubba and Amanda (the girl who was an integral part of Gone, Baby, Gone).
My disappointment with Moonlight Mile has nothing to do with Lehane's plot concept, which is a good one. The plot invloves Kenzie and Gennaro, haunted by the past, revisiting the case that troubled them the most, following a twelve-year trail of secrets and lies. Believing that this time will be different, they vow to make good on their promise to find Amanda, who has once again disappeared. This vow leads them down a path that could cost them their lives.
My disappointment stems from what, until this book, I thought was an impossibility; which is that Lehane -- who has proven to be a master in creating rich, complex "real world" characters and dialogue that sounds "fresh from the street," -- could write a book in which some characters seem paper-thin and unbelievable, and which speak in a way that, while glib and, at times witty, doesn't ring true at all. This is especially true about the character of sixteen-year old Amanda, as well as of Lehane's Russian mob characters, which are virtually cartoonish. Further, the characters of Angie and Bubba, who have been favorites of mine throughout this series, don't come across as compelling or even particulary interesting in Moonlight Mile.
I hope this review is helpful in cautioning fans of this series that going back in time to revisit old friends might not always be the best move.Moonlight Mile: A Kenzie and Gennaro Novel Overview

Vacations Can Be Murder: The Second Charlie Parker Mystery ReviewAfter a taxing investigation (no pun intended) CPA and part-time investigator Charlie Parker decides to take a vacation to Kauai. She takes a scenic helicopter ride with Drake Langston, but gets more than she bargains for when they come across a dead body in a remote place. Drake's fellow pilot, Mack, is in the wrong place at the wrong time and he is accused of the murder. Drake asks Charlie to help with the investigation, since local law enforcement officers seem reluctant to look for any further suspects. Charlie obliges and, as a result, her relationship with Drake begins to blossom. She pursues the investigation with fervor (how many people would be willing to interrupt their Hawaiian vacation for a side-trip to California?) and eventually finds herself confronted by the killer. Except for a few awkward moments, this is a well-written mystery which has enough red herrings to make it interesting and it keeps the reader guessing until the very end.Vacations Can Be Murder: The Second Charlie Parker Mystery Overview
