Just Another Man: A Story of the Nazi Massacre of Kalavryta ReviewBlending fact and fiction is challenge for any writer yet first-time author Andy Varlow has done it seamlessly in "Just Another Man."
Based on the massacre of Kalvryta in which Nazis murdered every adult male in the village, including Varlow's own father, "Man" recounts the author's own story of survival throughout the first half of the book with vivid detail. But the book then evolves into a gripping fictional thriller as his character Yannis becomes obsessed with finding his father's killer.
The shift between the two halves of the book is subtle, there is no flashpoint where the fiction kicks in, and that is the underlying strength of the book.
What the reader will find most interesting is the wealth of subtext beneath the surface of the novel. While the first half is a loving tribute to Varlow's father and his childhood in Greece and the last half is more akin to a Ludlum novel the underlying theme is Yannis' rage at God for letting such a tragedy occur.
"Just Another Man" is just that, a story of one man wounded by tragedy and his need to overcome it.Just Another Man: A Story of the Nazi Massacre of Kalavryta OverviewA gripping tale of intrigue sends a man in search of his childhood nemesis.

Desperate Highway ReviewDesperate Highway
This book is an amazing true story of a man that didn't believe in anything or anyone. He lived his life in a manner that became challenging just to get through the day without the prospect of being locked up or worse. God put him through the ultimate test that would easily break any normal human being. This man is a true inspiration to anyone that is facing tough times; whether it be incarceration or otherwise. Props to the author, Jesse Stretch. Awesome read! Should be made into a movie!Desperate Highway Overview

The Witness ReviewJosh McDowell is a renowned Christian apologist. I read his More Than a Carpenter as a teenager, and I heard him speak at a Christian conference. I knew he could make a convincing argument for the claims of Christ. But I wasn't sure if he could write convincing fiction.
The answer is yes, he can. The Witness starts out with a bang, literally, as security expert Marwan Accad's client is killed in front of him. Marwan soon realizes that not only is he a target, but he's also the prime suspect in his client's murder. As he travels Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East trying to uncover the truth, he endangers everyone he cares about.
The Witness's plot is engaging, and the story is well-written. I did figure out who the bad guy was fairly quickly, and that's the only complaint I have about the book. What I appreciated most was how seamlessly McDowell weaved apologetics into the plot. In some Christian fiction I've read, it feels like the author felt obligated to present the gospel but didn't really know where or how to put it. This results in a clunky and awkward story, and I (and I'm sure many other readers) tend to skim those parts. Perhaps because McDowell is so used to defending the faith he was able to easily integrate the Truth into this story without compromising the entertainment value.
Who should read it? Anyone who enjoys suspense.
I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.The Witness OverviewFrom Monte Carlo to Morocco to Egypt and into Petra, Marwan Accad is pursued by authorities for murders he did not commit. Tracked by advanced intelligence-surveillance technology, his every location is eventually found out, thrusting those he loves into danger. Nurtured by a bitter past that equipped him with what he needed for his company to thrive, Marwan Accad never looks back. Yet the way forward promises only uncertainty, and living each day is a lie in which corruption and greed play in the lives of man. For whose lie is he going through all of this? Even as Marwan races against time to find his pursuers and their motives, he must grapple with what is beyond his life, with what is eternal.

The Oasis Project ReviewI love who-done-its, so after reading the other reviews I decided this would be my next favorite book.
Unfortunately I found it very easy to put down and quite difficult to keep picking up. I thought the writing style a little bit light and "chick-lit" (no offense ladies). There are references to God in unexpected places and more than too many for my taste. I didn't think this was a Christian novel, so it was somewhat out of character for the book. There is also a love interest that seemed a little juvenile for a mystery novel not publicized as a romance.
I really wanted to like this book, and when I completed it, it was none too soon. Maybe I missed something? Guess it just wasn't the "thriller" I was geared up for.

Jake's Choice (To Save a Life) ReviewJake's Choice is an awesome sequel to the Britts' To Save A Life book. Seldom do authors improve on their first book, but the Britts have hit a home-run with this one!
Jake's Choice is a study in contrasts as the lives of Jake and Amy continue to unfold. Jake goes to Louisville, KY to live out his dream of playing college basketball for the much-heralded Cardinals while Amy is left behind in Oceanside, CA to pick up the pieces of her shattered dreams after giving up their daughter Emily for adoption to a wonderful church couple.
For Jake, who postponed going to Louisville for a semester to be with Amy during her pregnancy and the birth of their daughter, life starts to unravel the minute he gets there. The transition from former high school basketball star and popular man on campus and new Christian to another anonymous face arriving on a college campus jars his reality. There are no warm welcomes. Nothing. He finds himself with an interesting roommate (who hasn't been there?) who's also the basketball team, but worst of all his teammates dis him for not arriving sooner and being there for the team. Add to that the fact he isn't happy with the churches he visits and you have the recipe for the disaster that unfolds in the pages that follow.
Amy, on the other hand, is attending a community college in Southern California, and is living with regrets about giving up her daughter Emily. As her story unfolds, she begins to run with Andrea and eventually gets together with Cari, the youth pastor Chris' wife. Amy comes to faith in Jesus Christ and wants to share what's she's learning with Jake.
What unfolds is these two people who are living in opposite parts of the country are moving in two different directions: Amy closer to God and Jake further away. My wife drew a picture for me while we dating that amply illustrates a beautiful principle that applies here. On a piece of paper she drew a triangle. At the base of the triangle, on the left hand side, she wrote Me; on the right hand side, she wrote You. At the top of the triangle, she wrote God. Her point: as we each drew nearer to God we would be drawn closer together. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case with Amy and Jake. Amy drew nearer to God and Jake did not. Their relationship suffered as a result of this.
Without giving up too much of the story: Amy follows God's direction for her life and lives out her dream of going to Stanford University and is blessed beyond her wildest dreams. Jake, on the other hand, tries to win the approval of his teammates, makes bad choices, and goes through one trial after another. It isn't until an elderly man from the first church he visited in Louisville comes back into his life and challenges him to glow - to let his life shine before men so that they may see his good works and glorify his Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16)- that Jake starts to get his life back on track.
In my 23 years of walking with the Lord I have read a number of Christian books, both fiction and nonfiction, but I'll tell you in all honestly, apart from the Bible, I have never in my life read a book that truly puts into proper persective what it means to be a Christian than Jake's Choice. This is a must read book, as is it's prequel To Save A Life. May God continue to use Jim and Rachel Britts in a mighty way to reach the lost and hurting for Christ. May the story continue!Jake's Choice (To Save a Life) OverviewThe second novel in the To Save A Life series finds Jake Taylor at college thousands of miles apart from his girlfriend Amy. Befriending a young girl with a traumatic history leads Amy back to the father who abandoned her. Jake's position on the Louisville basketball team lands him in the midst of parties, beautiful women...and one decision that will shake him to the core. When everything Jake believes is challenged, will he go with the flow or stand alone for what is right? One choice will change everything...

Shadows of Lancaster County ReviewAnna Bailey changed her name and moved to California in an attempt to escape from a tragic accident in her past. But it all comes rushing back to her with the ringing of the phone. On the other end is her sister-in-law saying that her brother, Bobby, is missing. Anna isn't inclined to rush back to Pennsylvania until someone breaks into her house, almost kills her roommate, and holds Anna at gun point demanding the Beauharnais Rubies, whatever those are.
Against her better judgment, Anna decides to make the trip back to Amish country and try to figure out what is happening. Trying to dodge the media, she sets out to learn what she can. But what happened to Bobby? What secrets is he hiding? And just want are those jewels?
Ever since I first found Mindy Starns Clark, I have loved her books. This was no exception. I was absorbed in the story from page one. I only put the book down with extreme effort. The pacing was perfect, giving us just enough info to keep us going while withholding the big reveals until the second half. I had a couple small niggles with the ending, but really, they are very minor.
The characters were equally wonderful. I loved Anna immediately. We get to know several Amish as the book progresses, and the look into their way of life was fascinating.
I was very sorry to see this book end. It just may be my favorite by this author. I'm already looking forward to wherever her next book takes us.Shadows of Lancaster County Overview

Let's Roll: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage ReviewI presume to suggest that this book be read in combination with Jere Longman's Among the Heroes. Frankly, I am unable to appreciate the full nature and extent of Lisa Beamer's grief, following the death of her husband and others aboard United flight 93. As she explains in this book, her primary challenge since then has been to overcome that grief while somehow providing for the needs of their three children. (Daughter Morgan was born in January, only a few months after United flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.) Although she has written a bestseller, and continues to attract media attention, Lisa Beamer remains focused on her children and the work of the Todd M. Beamer Foundation whose mission is to assist other children who have also lost a parent. The title of her book refers to her late husband's last recorded remarks just before he and others aboard the plane attempted to overcome the terrorists who had skyjacked it. ("Are you guys ready? Let's roll!") They knew what had already happened on September 11th whereas those aboard the other three flights did not. Huddled to the rear of their plane, several were able to call loved ones and then recited the Lord's Prayer before rushing the forward area.
Those who read this book expecting a detailed account of those final moments will be disappointed. (That is why I highly recommend Longman's book.) What Lisa Beamer shares in this book is her abiding religious faith, probably without which she could not cope with the loss of her beloved husband. She is also determined to help others to understand who her late husband was and why his heroism is "so Todd." She suggests that he was "more than a half hour of time on September 11." Of course, the same can be said of everyone else aboard that flight as well as of those aboard the other three flights and of everyone else who perished at the World Trade Center and at the Pentagon.
It has been less than a year since the multiple of tragedies occurred and it may be several decades before we will be able to fully grasp the nature and extent of heroism both in the air and on the ground throughout that tragic day...and during the weeks which followed. Lisa Beamer has written an inspirational account of her own experiences. Although apparently there have been indications at least some resentment of her celebrity, with which she seems to be uncomfortable, she observes that "I haven't gotten that sense on my interactions with the other families. I do my best to say what happened on that plane was teamwork, that there are a lot of untold stories and other heroes" aboard United flight 93. Perhaps in time, we will learn more about them. Perhaps those "untold stories" will be added to Todd Beamer's.
My final comment is that, now more than ever before, we need to re-define heroism so as to include otherwise "ordinary" people who, when faced with a life-threatening crisis, respond with extraordinary courage. May our beloved nation always have Todd Beamers to accept that challenge...and Lisa Beamers to help us to appreciate them.Let's Roll: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage Overview2003 ECPA Gold Medallion Award winner! The best-seller that has brought comfort and hope to millions in the wake of 9/11 is now available in softcover! Let's Roll!-the moving, behind-the-scenes story of United Flight 93 hero Todd Beamer and his widow, Lisa-is so much more than a tribute. A message of character, courage, and undeniable faith in the face of horrifying tragedy, it encourages anyone who reads it to live real life right now . . . and to have confidence and hope for the future.

Intervention (Intervention Series, Book 1) ReviewTerri Blackstock has delivered a number of best selling series including Restoration, Cape Refuge, Northpoint 911, and Suncoast Chronicles. Over the past few months she has stepped away from that formula to offer two excellent stand-alone novels in a row. First, in Double Minds, Blackstock carried us into the world of the Christian recording industry. Now, Intervention opens up a world every parent fears and too many have experienced.
Barbara Covington is a widow doing her best to raise two teenage children without their father. After years of fighting to save her daughter from her own destructive drug habit, Barbara calls in an interventionist from a high priced drug rehab center in Atlanta. What begins as a mother's fears and prayers for her daughter's rehabilitation in a distant city transforms into an unbelievable nightmare when the interventionist is found murdered and Emily, her daughter, missing.
This is the story of one woman's determination to find her daughter and prove her innocence. Whatever the cost. At every step I asked myself, what would I do as a parent to save my child in a similar situation? Be careful before you answer. What we learn from Barbara and Emily is that no family crisis occurs at some convenient time in some easily solved manner. Well meaning people sometimes offer the tritest words of, what they mistakenly think is encouragement. Sometimes it feels as though no one understands and that the heavens have grown silent - for both parent and child.
The characters are people struggling with their faith in the crucible of extraordinary circumstances. Knowing that the author has personally worked in ministries to women just like Emily only makes the story more compelling. Intervention is an intensely personal and spiritual novel; one that quite possibly will garner the label of "preachy" by some. As far as this reviewer is concerned it is a message that needs to be heard by all parents and their children. We are all works in progress in need of the ultimate Interventionist. Thank you, Terri, for reminding us of that truth.Intervention (Intervention Series, Book 1) Overview

The Ultimate Gift (The Ultimate Series #1) ReviewI started this book by looking at the Table of Contents. In the Beginning. A Voice from the Past. The Gift of Work. The Gift of Money. The Gift of Friends.
What is this? Is this the kind of book I want to read?
I flipped to the back cover of the book for insight to the contents. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to read the last will and testament of Howard 'Red' Stevens.." "Red Steves was a self-made man who gave his family everything-and ruined them in the process. Now, as his estate of oil companies and cattle ranches is divided among the greedy and self-serving relatives, one member is singled out for something special: Red's great-nephew, Jason. In a darkened room, isolated from the rest of his family, Jason is confronted by the image of deceased great uncle on a video monitor . . ."
I began Chapter One out of curiosity. It was a story, not a touchy-feely book, like I feared. The narrative comes from an eighty-year old attorney who is reading the will of a very successful long-term client who had become a close, dear friend. As part of the inheritance, the old man's grand-nephew, a spoiled brat sort of young man, is given a special bequest. Each month he is to return to the attorney's office for a learning assignment. If he stays with the program successfully, meeting the approval of the attorney, he gains the Ultimate Gift. If he quits or doesn't meet the grade at any time, he loses his opportunity for the Ultimate Gift.
As the book progresses through the chapters, the young man, Jason, transforms from an insolent know-it-all to a much different person. The series of learnings, prescribed each month by the old man by videotape, gives a new meaning to Jason's life. Each of the gifts, a learning, is described in Jason's words as he gains new realizations.
I found myself surprisingly captivated by this book. I couldn't put it down. No, it's not a mystery or thriller, but it certainly held my attention. I can think of a number of people I know who would surely benefit from this book. One will receive my copy shortly as a very meaningful gift.
A word about the author. Jim Stovall has overcome blindness to become a national champion Olympic weightlifter, a successful investment broker, and entrepreneur. He is co-founder and president of the Narrative Television Network, which makes movies and television accessible to our nation's 13 million blind and visually impaired and their families. With revealing more about this man's incredible background (see page 124), I "got" that this is a man to be listened to. You'll gain the same feeling as you read The Ultimate Gift. The Ultimate Gift (The Ultimate Series #1) Overview
What would you do to inherit a million dollars? Would you be willing to change your life? Jason Stevens is about to find out in Jim Stovall's The Ultimate Gift.

Red Stevens has died, and the older members of his family receive their millions with greedy anticipation. But a different fate awaits young Jason, whom Stevens, his great-uncle, believes may be the last vestige of hope in the family.

"Although to date your life seems to be a sorry excuse for anything I would call promising, there does seem to be a spark of something in you that I hope we can fan into a flame. For that reason, I am not making you an instant millionaire."

What Stevens does give Jason leads to The Ultimate Gift. Young and old will take this timeless tale to heart.
