Runner, A Jane Whitefield Novel ReviewI've read just about everything by Thomas Perry, and the Jane Whitefield books are my favorites. The brilliant Native American woman who takes people "out of the world" is back with an exciting new case. It's been a few years, and Jane must adjust to new realities (post-9/11 security systems, new Internet tracking capabilities, etc.) to help an abused, pregnant woman disappear from the ruthless people who are looking for her.
Perry knows Jane Whitefield inside and out, and everything she does in these adventures just rings true. Every new book is like a visit with an old friend, which is how I think of her. She uses her common sense while avoiding the thousands of mistakes most of us would make (phones, email, GPS, Internet, etc.) in making other people vanish without a trace. Of course, the modern world makes vanishing increasingly difficult, and Jane has to strive to keep ahead of all the latest technology that is her profession's enemy. This makes her a bit of an old-fashioned throwback--but it also enables her to get the job done. RUNNER is a fascinating addition to this wonderful series. Recommended.

Pecan Gap: A Jake Somers Novel ReviewAs I read Pecan Gap by Don Castle, I couldn't figure out if I was reading a mystery, a murder mystery or a romance novel! This book has it all starting with Jake Sanders who is an ex-cop who owns a PI firm and is from Pecan Gap. Jake is investigating murders or friends and family as well as himself, as well as the mystery of the bones he finds which are then stolen. If you like true crime and mystery, you will like this book, it has it all. The book is very interesting and a good read.Pecan Gap: A Jake Somers Novel Overview

Dearly Departed ReviewMary Baxter's second book is as good as her first, Erasing Mrs. Loomis. The story revolves around the death of a bank president. The police call it suicide, but the widow can't accept that, and when a bag of money is found in his tennis locker, she realizes that something is amiss.
Mary has developed a good, believable plot with likeable characters, except for one bad guy, of course. The story moves along at a fast pace; once I began reading, I did not want to stop.
I highly recommend Dearly Departed. It is written well, with excellent sentence structure; it does not have the grammatical errors that are found so often in today's novels.Dearly Departed OverviewAfter Walter Wilkins, a bank president, commits suicide, his wife, Suzanne, donates his favorite jacket to a used clothing store. Dave Monaco, a suspended cop, buys it and finds a key sewn into the lining. Dave decides to investigate. His trail leads t

From Potter's Field (Kay Scarpetta) ReviewAnother great book from Madame Medical Investigator Author Patricia Cornwell. Always well-researched, this time the book causes Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Marino and of course, FBI Agent Benton Wesley to investigate the death of a frozen naked woman propped openly in Central Park. Their path leads them to the parents of a psychotic serial killer, one of whom can see nothing wrong about her son and the other parent who would only see his if pointing a shotgun at the son's face. The woman's identity is a shock, as is Scarpetta's handiness with a side-arm. A must-read!From Potter's Field (Kay Scarpetta) Overview

The Secret Keeper: A Dick Hardesty Mystery ReviewThe Dorien Grey series of books are set in a slightly earlier time, in an anonymous large (due to the availability of public transport often referred to)city. The Private Eye genre is approached in a low key, calm manner, that makes the instances investigated realistic. Other gay detectives don't seem to worry about paying the bills, of if a client will pay, which is quite charming and a nice change. The detectives home life issues are also woven into the story in the secret keeper, which revolves around the antics of a spoilt, well to do family.
The whole series slowly builds the charachers and their close friends to a likeable crew you would wish to know. Dicks life develops and changes as the series progresses, and he matures from a bar hopper keen on one nite stands to someone who has to act as a 'grown up' at all times around the small child that becomes part of his family.
I have enjoyed these books, and The Secret Keeper: A Dick Hardesty Mysteryreally recommend the series as a whole, but I should advise you that 'sex, drugs and rock and roll' aspects of gay life are not covered here!!
The Secret Keeper: A Dick Hardesty Mystery Overview
PI Dick Hardesty listens with polite interest to his partner Jonathan's stories of his days working for 90-year-old multimillionaire Clarence Bement, helping the old man tend his garden. But when Bement is found dead, an apparent suicide, Jonathan is adamant that the old man would never have killed himself, a theory also held by Bement's grandson, Mel Fowler.

When Mel hires him to investigate, Dick learns Bement's lawyer also died mysteriously barely a week before Bement. He finds himself immersed in a world of greed and familial dysfunction, searching for a missing new will, and Jonathan becomes the target for someone who believes the old man entrusted him with a secret Jonathan is not aware he has.

Conspiracy in the Shadows ReviewI was surprised at the pace in which I read this book. I am typically not a very fast reader, but I could not put it down! The story line and charcters are very well set up and draw you in as you root for the good guys and learn to dispise the bad guys. A true page turner.Conspiracy in the Shadows OverviewOn the mean streets of L.A., conspiracy lurks around every corner. A routine traffic stop by two average cops turns into the most interesting investigation of their careers. When Bobby and J.R. pull over a criminal they're familiar with for not having a current license plate, they uncover a wealth of illegal goods in his trunk: stolen computer equipment, pirated movies and software, and the most surprising, a kilo of cocaine, an amount unusually large for Big Ray. When they catch up with Ray's seller, they find that somewhere lies a Chinese passageway. With a good lead and information no else has been able to get, they are assigned to the massive case involving the DEA, the Justice Department, and the FBI. They spend hours following the criminals and soon discover just what they need to get in to the criminal organization and link the conspirators. But the organization is one step ahead, and Bobby is forced to constantly keep on the run with the help of J.R. Follow Bobby and J.R. on this intriguing thrill ride to unveil the Conspiracy in the Shadows.

Carolina Heat ReviewOriginally posted at [...]
In Carolina Heat Annabelle Carlyle barrels into Charleston at a moment's notice, resigned to taking on her next journalism assignment, and immediately gets a whole lot more than she bargained for.
For starters, she happens into a helpful handsome hunk with stunning muscles. His tan nearly more extraordinary than his physique and he sports a southern drawl as sweet as warm honey. Mark has a nice sense of humor too, immediately making light of his aid, calling it his daily `rescue of damsel in distress.'
Just as we settle in to enjoy the two of them getting to know one another, the plot leaps in another direction entirely. Annabelle's boss calls, but with an amazing lack of details about her actual assignment. Go see the city, he tells her. We (and she) can tell there is more to this than a travel story, but what, exactly? She's hardly there to smell the magnolias, but what exactly she'll be looking into intrigues us as much as her. Only slowly do we (or our heroine) gain information on the recently missing Civil War buff/museum curator. Something is going on and it's immediately apparent...
Annabelle is always willing to think the worst in any situation, so between work-stress, the secret search, and Mark's innuendos, she's decidedly leaning toward short tempered, snappy decisions. Given her reactions to some comments, we don't know if she's a bit shrewish, or if Mark is a tiny bit creepy.
Ms. Barth builds a wonderfully involved story. With attention to small detail, from very internal things like personal attitudes, to more descriptive passages of the smothering, humid heat, she really brings this story to life.
The odd happy coincidence keeps the romance end of things moving along, even if somewhat tempestuously, but still, it doesn't take much imagination to grasp where it is going. Snappy dialogue and moments of suspense keep things moving right along. Some intimate moments are simply smoking... and I love the fact that even though a lot happens, (and there were other important characters, even Annabelle's male friend Jonathan,) Ms. Barth never lets us lose sight of the central romance.
Feel like you've met a real charmer in historic Charleston, yourself! Carolina Heat has all the charm suggested by a sweet southern accent with more than a touch of spice!
Do read.
Carolina Heat OverviewWell-known journalist Annabelle Carlyle is stunned by the personal twist of her latest assignment: her best friend Vanessa is missing. Annabelle goes undercover in the Old South to search for answers. Full of thick accents and a way of life rooted in the past, Charleston is as foreign and strange a place as any she's visited. Before finding a single clue, Annabelle encounters a sexy man she can't shake. Tall, dark and charming, Mark Dering is happy to show the gorgeous Yankee his hometown. He's captivated by the quick witted, quick tempered redhead. But when they're shot at, he realizes she's far more than just another tourist. Soon they're deep into a mystery that goes way back to the Civil War. For once Annabelle is in over her head. Desperate to find Vanessa, she reluctantly accepts Mark's help and it isn't long before romance blooms. The stakes grow higher when a body is discovered. Someone is willing to kill to keep a century old Confederate secret hidden. With her best friend missing and a killer on the loose, it's the worst possible moment for Mark to try and unlock Annabelle's heart. Or is love exactly what her life's been missing?

Intercept ReviewForbes' second in her murder mystery series delivers interesting reading for a variety of tastes. "Intercept" includes the world of boats, criminal intrigue, terrorism, horse racing, and romance all against the backdrop of Florida's east coast. Readers will appreciate their deepening relationship with principal characters (Manny, Hutch, and Catherine) as well as the introduction of a few new ones (Daytona Pete and JJ). "Intercept" is another enjoyable read that travels from New York to Caracas. Along the way, a plot is discovered to discharge deadly biological agents at the Belmont of the Triple Crown. Will Manny and Hutch be able to intercept the drone in time? Will Catherine and Hutch complete their courtship? The ending surprised even the intuitive Peaches!Intercept OverviewWar-veteran Daytona Pete intercepts a mayday call on his ham radio at 5:30 p.m. amidst a raging storm off Florida's east coast. The skipper of the forty-four-foot Molly C requests assistance. The fierce storm prevents immediate rescue. Insured for Murder ReviewI was 18 years old living in the French Market in Columbus Ohio going to Bradford Business School. John Hawkins lived in my apartment building one floor down. He was incredibly goodlooking. I lived with 3 other girls at the time and we made friends with him and his friends. As a matter of fact, one of my classmates worked at his Just Sweats store at the French Market. He would routinely come into the store and take the cash out of the register then leave. This would make the manager so mad because they wouldn't be able to reconcile the books. I remember that he drove a black porsche. I was in his apartment a few times to borrow a wine opener. I remember him having a very expensive stereo system and big screen t.v. Back in 87', it was a big deal to have such a system. I came very close to sleeping with this man. To his credit, he thought I was too young. I look back now and think what a naive little girl I was. It wasn't long after I graduated from Bradford, that he was wanted for murder. I remember watching the news and seeing his face and the accompaying news story. My jaw dropped to the floor. This man was addicted to the fast life. He used his looks and charm to get what he wanted. I haven't read this book but I plan on buying it.Insured for Murder Overview

The Bee Balm Murders: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries) ReviewAs soon as I finish one I look forward to the next Victoria Trumbull mystery, but this one was disappointing. The story was okay, but 99% of the characters were just for this book. The regular characters had a cameo appearance or none at all. Victoria was just stumbling around and things fell into place. Her granddaughter that lives in the house was invisible. Casey had learned in the past to pay attention to Victoria, but just pushed her away this time. There was no feeling of the character we have known in the past as Casey. Victoria's thinking was clouded by Lyme disease and antibiotics. This lasted the whole book. Instead of bringing in someone who worked with the new characters get her a native teenage helper that can dance around the computer and teach Victoria a bit of how to surf the web. I hope the next book is back to the original standards. The Bee Balm Murders: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries) OverviewThe one-of-a-kind sleuth Victoria Trumbull must solve another puzzling mystery on Martha's Vineyard, her Island home. It's spring on the Island, and at the suggestion of her beekeeper, Victoria takes in a new boarder, Orion Nanopoulos. Orion is leading a project to lay a fiber-optic cable across the island. When a body is found in the trench where they are laying the cable, Orion tells Victoria he recognizes the dead man as someone who was a potential investor. Victoria, renowned for her skill at solving crimes and for her knowledge about the Island's residents, is hired by the dead man's sons to investigate the murder. The Bee Balm Murders is the tenth entry in this delightful cozy series. Boasting a unique heroine, an eccentric cast, and beautiful descriptions of Martha's Vineyard, it's sure to please fans and create new ones.

White Sky, Black Ice (Nathan Active Mysteries) ReviewThis book is a flawless gem! Born in a native village but raised in a big city, a young Alaskan State Trooper is posted to the town where he was born. He is faced with solving a puzzling series of suicides while trying to balance himself between two cultures. It's a corking good mystery and placed in a genuine Alaskan setting.
I was a Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal in Alaska during its final territorial and early statehood years. What impressed me most about this book was its absolute authenticity. The natives, the way they live, their unique speech patterns, the land they live in, and the climate they endure are all true to life. Just as realistic are the problems facing a police officer in the rural areas of Alaska.
WHITE SKY, BLACK ICE turned back the clock for me and I felt right at home, page after page. Read it. You'll learn more about the real Alaska from this book than from any guided tour!White Sky, Black Ice (Nathan Active Mysteries) Overview

Twisted: A Novel ReviewWe're long-time Jonathan Kellerman fans, and have generally enjoyed his entire book list. We've noticed his last few books seemed to lack some of the interest and pizzazz of the earlier ones, particularly those featuring his leading man Alex Delaware. Noticing that "Twisted" is his fifth novel published in the last 24 months, counting his somewhat disappointing book co-authored with wife Faye ["Double Homicide"], we didn't have particularly high expectations for a stunning return to form. Surprise! Not only is this a Petra Conner story (her second starring role, plus a few bit parts here and there), but sidekick Isaac Gomez, a genius just barely out of his teens nearing completion of his PhD, is so interesting a character he steals the show, not to mention our hearts! Assigned as an intern to the LAPD, he shows Petra the results of some extensive statistical sampling of homicide case data he has compiled, noting unusual similarities between six cold cases that have never previously been considered connected. Although Petra is officially involved in a high profile shooting investigation, in which she shows very expertly her skills and persistence, she latches on to Isaac's work with great curiosity - and soon a spellbinding hunt for a possible serial killer is on. Some amusing (and sexy) incidents at the research library meanwhile shed some light on the murders, and a nice twist at the end wraps things up in a very cool fashion.
Kellerman's writing crafts have never been in question, but it just seemed lately he might be tiring. However, "Twisted" ranks to us with his best work: a clever plot, an intriguing mystery, some dogged police and amateur investigative work, with plenty of time to identify with and care about the principals, all add up to a most entertaining tale that was difficult to put down. One of the best books we've read this year deserves our high praise and five stars!

Secrets of the Congdon Mansion: The Unofficial Guide to Glensheen and the Congdon Murders Review"Secrets of the Congdon Mansion" is a fast, fun read. I sure got my money's worth. I can see why this is one of Minnesota's best known murders. It feels like a game of Clue, except it's all true. This book has good villains and victims. It also also has the right mix of news and gossip. I especially enjoyed the author's behind-the-scene stories about the case, like being the only nonfamily member allowed to attend the killer's funeral. I was pleased that it was very update and included very recent events. You don't have to tour Glensheen to appreciate the tale, but if you do this book has helpful maps and diagrams of the rooms.
Secrets of the Congdon Mansion: The Unofficial Guide to Glensheen and the Congdon Murders OverviewThe best-selling book about the Congdon Murders in Duluth, Minn., is a classic tale of murder, money and mansion. Reporter Joe Kimball, who has covered the case from the beginning, reveals the inside information behind the murder of Elisabeth Congdon, who was smothered in her bed in the 39-room Glensheen Mansion. The night nurse was beaten to death with a candlestick holder on the mansion's grand stairway while trying to protect the partially-paralyzed heiress.Police immediately suspected Congdon's adopted daughter and her new husband. The motive: speeding up the inheritance. The husband was convicted of the crimes, but the daughter -- Marjorie Congdon Caldwell Hagen -- was found not guilty of charges that she helped plan the murders. But that's not the end of the story. Marjorie has been in the news -- and in prison -- in the years since the mansion murders. Bigamy charges, two arson convictions, charges of another murder, and the mysterious death of an elderly man she befriended in Arizona have kept her story alive.Kimball updates the book regularly to bring readers the latest news on this fascinating case.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

A Stranger Is Watching ReviewFour stars go to a wonderful author with several published books. A Stranger Is Watching was particularly intriguing. It keeps the reader interested and not wanting to stop. The short chapters make it an easy book to get hooked on. The mother of a family is killed and a local teen is found guilty of the murder. Ronald Thompson knows he did not kill Nina Peterson but he will be executed in just fifty-two hours. Steve Peterson, the husband of the victim and his new girlfriend, Sharon Martin have different points of view on capital punishment. Sharon and six year old Neil, son of Steve and Nina, get kidnapped by a man for ransom. Only Mary Higgins Clark could write a story this twisted and terrifying. With a good storyline to keep readers of all ages turning to read just "one more chapter," I would recommend this book to anybody that likes suspense. The only negative thing about this book is the way there are so many different groups of people and every chapter switches to tell about a different group each time. The first three chapters are kind of boring but once you get into the meat of the story and discover what is going on, there is no putting it down.A Stranger Is Watching OverviewRonald Thompson knows he never killed Nina Peterson... yet in two days the state of Connecticut will take his life, having found him guilty via due process of law. But Thompson's death will not stop the pain and anger of Nina's husband, Steve. Thompson's death will not still the fears of Nna's six-year-old son, Neil, witness to his mother's brutal slaying. Not even the love and friendship of Sharon Martin, a journalist who is slowly becoming a part of their world, will ever erase their bitter memories. Only time, perhaps, will heal their wounds. But in the shadows a stranger waits, a cunning psychopath who has killed before, who has unfinished business at the Peterson home...
