Hanging Up ReviewI was looking for a light-hearted page turner and found one in Hanging Up. Colorful characters and the split-chronology device kept what could have been a dull storyline alive. These three sisters seemed very human in their struggle to balance independent lives with responsibility and in finding compassion for their difficult father. Sure, it's not literature and definitely has a Meg Ryan-movie flavor, but this is a satisfying read if you're looking for a warm, contemporary story and a few good chuckles.Hanging Up Overview

Double Blind ReviewDouble Blind is the third entry into the Henry Lightstone series by Ken Goddard. Goddard seems to be slipping with each succesive entry in the series. Goddard started with an idea that had a lot to offer, but in the end the result is disappointing. Lightstone and his team of Federal Wildlife Agents are set up for elimination by a crack team of ex-military "hunter-killers". Lightstone is a good character and he is surrounded by an interesting cast of characters. Goddard's experience in Law Enforcement is readily apparent in his writing. The story begins to drag when Lightstone's team attempts to set up their undercover operation. Goddard spends a great deal of time with this device and it does nothing to progress the story. Goddard continually refers to Lightstone as the team's "wild-card agent", along with several other similar monikers, throughout the story and it really begins to grate on your nerves. I was left feeling cheated with a quick ending that tied-up all of the loose ends too easily. Goddard spent 450+ pages setting up a showdown which never materialized. Double Blind was not Goddard at his best, but he is still a lot better than many of the authors in this genre. Readers interested in Goodard's better books should read Balefire, Cheater, and Prey.Double Blind Overview

The Revenge of the Cheerleaders ReviewReady? Okay!
Janette Rallison's novels for teens are, in a word, fun. They tend to be fueled by comedy, romance, and drama both at school and home. They also have undeniably catchy titles. Who could resist a book called Fame, Glory, and Other Things on My To Do List, or one entitled All's Fair in Love, War, and High School?
All's Fair came out in 2003. The sequel, Revenge of the Cheerleaders, is just as peppy as its predecessor. The book focuses on a high school singing competition that is similar to American Idol, but being held exclusively for teens. Chelsea and her friends want to make sure it's a clean competition, even if Rick, her little sister's rude rocker boyfriend, tries to trip them up.
Despite popular opinion to the contrary, revenge is a dish best served warm and WITHOUT mean spirit. This book is cute and cheery. If you liked Janette Rallison's previous novels, if you can quote the movie Clueless, or if you enjoy lighthearted dramedies, then Revenge of the Cheerleaders will make you grin and giggle. The Revenge of the Cheerleaders OverviewChelsea's school year has taken a turn for the worse. After being dumped by her boyfriend and humiliated at the pep assembly by her younger sister's boyfriend, Rick, she's just concentrating on avoiding any other major embarrassments. That's when Rick and his band debut their new album, complete with a whole set of songs bashing cheerleaders. Chelsea's humiliation has reached a whole new level now that everyone is walking down the halls singing the words to "Dangerously Blonde." It's time to make Rick pay. All he wants is to win the High School Idol audition, so he can be on his way to rock star fame and fortune. But with the help of her best friends, Aubrie and Samantha, Chelsea is going to steal his victory right out from under him. The characters from All's Fair in Love, War and High School are back, only this time it's payback.

Typo: The Last American Typesetter or How I Made and Lost 4 Million Dollars ReviewThe book certainly held my interest, and I enjoyed reading it. The blow-by-blow story of how an American company is crushed by industry forces (in this case, failing to adapt to low wage off-shoring competition) is compelling.
And yet, after finishing the book, the more I reflected on it, the less I liked it, and the less comfortable I felt with the author. One the plus side, he comes across as being forthright, and I give him props for baring his soul about how his company failed under his watch. Not many people would do that.
At the same time, Silverman did not seem to have much respect or empathy for his employees. He goes out of his way to make derogatory comments about their appearance or habits. The whole state of Iowa is portrayed as a grotesque backwater ... there are gratuitous digs taken against other locations ... indeed, if I recall correctly, no place away from the East Coast gets his respect. And that actually doesn't bother me much, except, that (i) I'm not sure that Silverman ever reconciles his utter failure to reach his employees with his lack of appreciation for them, and (ii) who in their right mind would buy a company in small-town Iowa and expect it to be driven by hard-charging cutting-edge types? That's not a knock on Iowa; the hard truth is that in small towns, opportunities are limited, so many ambitious, intelligent people leave, setting up a negative cycle where it's hard to start a new business because the labor pool isn't right.
Beyond that, there's a little too much of a victim mentality in the book, as if the company would have been fine if Fortuna hadn't thrown all these cataclysms into its way. And yet, the challenges the company faced were fairly prosaic: competition, unscrupulous salesmen, customers who backed out of contracts, employees who were incompetent, obstructionist, and/or resistant to change. Significant challenges to be sure, but ones that should have been expected all along.
There appears to be an element of axe-grinding in this book, which makes me treat it cautiously. That's understandable; as Silverman says, he lost his life savings, his father's life savings, and his father and friend passed away during that time.
Finally, I agree with a previous reviewer: the subtitle is misleading, as Clarinda was not the last American typesetting company, and the obfuscation of the name of Silverman's previous company is curious; it at least should have been explained.Typo: The Last American Typesetter or How I Made and Lost 4 Million Dollars OverviewTwo months before David Silverman's 32nd birthday, he visited the Charles Schwab branch in the basement of the World Trade Center to wire his father's life savings towards the purchase of the Clarinda Typesetting company in Clarinda, Iowa. Typo tells the true story of the Clarinda company's last rise and fall - and with it one entrepreneur's story of what it means to take on, run, and ultimately lose an entire life's work. This book is an American dream run aground, told with humor despite moments of tragedy. The story reveals the impact of losing part of an entire industry and answers questions about how that impacts American business. The reader sees in Clarinda's fate the potential peril faced by every company, and the lessons learned are applicable to anyone who wants to run his or her own business, succeed in a large corporation, and not be stranded by the reality of shifting markets, outsourcing, and, ultimately, capitalism itself.

Andy Kaufman Revealed: Best Friend Tells All ReviewOne thing Zmuda's book does that "Man on the Moon" did not is outline the M.O. for Andy's stunts, although it still doesn't really establish a reason for them. Of course, maybe there wasn't one. Andy tried to erase the boundary between comedy on the screen and comedy in the field, but whether or not there was a point to his efforts isn't completely decided in this book -- he still could have just been an idiot savant for all we know. The stories behind Andy's best-known antics are wonderful; he and Zmuda really did operate a precise machine of real-life theatre that, for better or worse, set a lot of precedents in show business. The Jerry Lawlor passage puts to rest one of the entertainment questions I've been wracking myself about for many years.
I also liked Zmuda's chapter on his adventures with Mr. X (btw, Mr. X is allegedly Norman Wexler, who wrote "Serpico" and "Saturday Night Fever," according to Roger Ebert); if it doesn't obviously show the inspiration for Tony Clifton, it's still a great story. But I also agree with many other readers that Zmuda intrudes a bit too much of his own biography upon the story of Kaufman's, and succumbs to cliches, and sometimes embarassing details, about his own sex/love lives too much for my taste.
I haven't read the other bio on Kaufman yet, but I suspect that seeing "Man on the Moon" and reading this book might provide you with a good summary of Kaufman's life and importance. Of course, what's really needed is a comprehensive video release of his television history -- a great idea would be a compilation of his appearances on "Saturday Night Live" and "Fridays" if such a deal could be worked out. Not a bad reference, and definitely an entertaining and quick, if flawed, read.Andy Kaufman Revealed: Best Friend Tells All Overview

The Revenge Encyclopedia ReviewRevenge Encyclopedia, is full of many tips that would cost alot of money to buy in other books. However, other books take the time to explain how not to get caught.
What am I saying... This can be a dangerous book if given to the worng person, AKA someone with no common sense. However if it's quantity not quality you're looking for, these pages have about 1000 ticks and pranks. Some are so cruel I wouldn't use them on my worst enemy. I would suggest for those who want to be more careful to buy George Haydukes books as most of the pranks came from him.
PS... Printed really cheaply.... book is thick and large. Not easily concealed. Bad choice for production if you want to conceal this book. It's about the size of a relatively think coloring book. The print is off center, top of the word is ahead of the bottom of the word. I don't feel it was worth the price as for quality but quantity was worth every penny. If only they were less cheap and printed it in a more well rounded way...
The Revenge Encyclopedia OverviewThis is the mother of all revenge books! You'd have to buy more than 25 books to get all the wit and wisdom contained in this compilation from the best of Paladin's revenge books. Don't be fooled by cheap imitators that claim to know how to get even. Paladin is still your revenge source when you need to even the score with nosy neighbors, bungling bureaucrats, snarly clerks or other pests. For entertainment purposes only.

L.A. Bizarro: The All-New Insider's Guide to the Obscure, the Absurd, and the Perverse in Los Angeles ReviewYears ago, I read the first L.A. Bizarro. LOL - admittedly, I was too young and too afraid to visit some of the places listed in the book, so I read it with a sort of voyeuristic wistfulness.
Now, Older (not that much!) and braver, I was thrilled to find the new, updated L.A. Bizarro.
This isn't your Grandma's guidebook!
The authors of L.A. Bizarro bring L.A. natives and tourists alike a peephole view into the kitschy, deviant and bizarre L.A. The L.A. you only dream about.
The book is full of information on some of the weirdest and most interesting places in L.A. From stores where you can buy hardcore S&M Furniture, to dive bars, to haunted hotels and nude beaches, L.A. Bizarro brings them all to you.
A quick warning: some of the entries and photos are definitely not appropriate for kids. The book is strictly adults only, but it's a great deal of fun!L.A.
