A Question of Consequence ReviewMatthew Sterling is a recent Brigham Young University law school graduate and the assistant city manager of Snow Ridge, Utah, a small community in the Wasatch Front. Julia Wells is the newly elected mayor of this predominantly Mormon community. Upon entering the duties of their respective offices, Matt comes to find himself entangled in a web of City Hall corruption. Should Matt "go along to get along" or should he put his reputation, and perhaps his life, on the line. Will Julie believe him or will she believe the supposedly good LDS men who have set out to destroy his credibility? Matt's own tangled life is reflected in a similar situation of an ancestor of his, a Revolutionary War hero when he discovers the personal journal of Major Andrew McBride. The stories of Matt and Andrew are woven together into an impressive and memorable climax. A Question Of Consequence is as thoughtfully reflective as it is engagingly entertaining reading and document Gordon Ryan as a writer of skill and originality.A Question of Consequence Overview

Up Country ReviewIt's true, this is not a typical Nelson Demille thriller packed with intrigue, espionage and murder, but it is a fascinating story and obviously a topic that means a great deal to him. Paul Brenner, from The General's Daughter, is back and is called out of retirement to go back to Vietnam to perform a vaguely described mission for his former bosses at CID. As a veteran, Vietnam is the last place in the world he wants to go, however curiosity eventually overcomes his misgivings and he agrees to the mission.
Starting at Saigon, Brenner proceeds to accomplish two missions, one official and the other personal. He makes contact with Susan Weber who is more than she appears. He also relives many moments from the days during the war, exorcising some old demons along the way. From Saigon he heads north, up country, visiting old battlegrounds and lending great insight to us, the reader, into what life was like as an American GI in Vietnam.
I found this book to be a fascinating and informative adventure story. With so much travelling done by Brenner, there is no time for it to become slow and boring. The actual reason for his mission to Vietnam eventually becomes of secondary importance as I got caught up in the country and it's meaning to Brenner. By the end, it really made no difference to me what the final outcome was, I was satisfied by the journey however it turned out.
This book is obviously of special importance to Demille and feels as though it's a kind of homage to Vietnam and the people of both sides who fought there. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, appreciated the humour in which it was told and respect the emotion that it evokes. I fell richer for the experience of having read it.Up Country Overview

Unfinished Business: A Novel ReviewThe book started out at a high pace and that continued until the end. Every time I finished a chapter, I looked at the clock and thought if I can sneak in just one more. The character development was excellent and the historical perspective was a refreshing change from other suspense/espionage books which brush over such details. The book will easily translate into a major motion picture. Mr. Byrnes has a sense for suspense and that is great news for his fans who are eagerly awaiting the next installment.Unfinished Business: A Novel OverviewInvestment banker Peter Armstrong believes he's left his past. He has an exciting new job in London and is managing the largest equity offering in European history. Behind him are an incident at his old employer, and a broken engagement. He thinks his only problems are a difficult client and an overleveraged company - until he receives a phone call from his ex-fiancee, Dayna Caymus, a beautiful and unpredictable CIA agent.

Edge of God ReviewPels bridges the gap between Coonts and Clancy with his technological detail of a Clancy thriller and the imagery of a Coonts story line.
"Edge of God" takes you into the real time world of terrorism and choices that the men and women who fight the world's bad guys must make. Pels heightens the tension so well, that I actually found myself with an increased pulse-rate and trying not to skip pages ahead to see what happens. The pacing and writing are simply superb and unmatched.
Pels writes his book with a high level of technical knowledge, and it simply amazes me that he knows his stuff so well. This adds even more to the air and feel of authenticity.
Pels gives nothing away, and only slowly gives you details as to what your hero is up to. His technique kept my curiosity high, so I was hooked into the story itself. It was good to have the mystery of the story line revealed a bit at a time, it kept me thinking just what is going to happen.
For those into today's international terrorist style thrillers, Pels has found a way to deliver. "Edge of God" is without doubt one of the best books I have read all year, and certainly the best thriller.
Edge of God OverviewEx-CIA covert operator Martin Dallas has never failed a mission, not in the jungles of Cambodia or the deserts of the Middle East. After Wahhabi terrorists murder his wife, Dallas leads an elite mercenary team in a decisive covert op designed to end terrorism.
Financed by an American industrialist, Dallas secures suitcase nukes for his mission and prepares to strike at the heart of radical Islamic terrorists. At the same time, the CIA and a SEAL team have only hours to save tens of thousands of Americans from dying in a nuclear inferno triggered by suicide bombers who have already penetrated U.S. waters.
While tracking the nuclear-armed terrorists and deploying the first of his weapons Dallas slides back into nasty habits like kidnapping, torture, and murder. When it's time to detonate his first bomb, he realizes he's progressively losing his humanity and is becoming what he seeks to destroy. As Mossad and the CIA close in on him and his bomb, Dallas must quickly decide whether he'll incinerate thousands of civilians...or salvage his soul by allowing his mission to fail.

Return of the Aliens ReviewThis book is about what happens to the people on earth after the rapture of the church. I happen to be a christian who believes in this and read this with an open mind. It is a good book. I like the way she brought out the lie all people would believe and how she suggested people might take the mark of the beast. The demons and angels were in the book and even a love story. It is easy to follow this book and see how people can be deceived by lies and led down the wrong path. The book shows how people that do not take the mark will be hunted down and executed and how cash will be obsolete and other forms of money will be used, such as debit cards.I did think it was a little slow to get going, but after a couple of chapters it took off. Very good readReturn of the Aliens OverviewIn one moment, millions of people disappear.Among them is Autumn's sister and Alex's fiancé, Marianne. At the same time the people vanish, aliens are coming to Earth. The aliens say they want to advance man to the next level in evolution, but Autumn and Alex aren't convinced.Looking for answers and Marianne, they follow a lead to Area 51.All they find are more questions, and Alex discovers his nightmares have just begun.Meanwhile, Autumn meets Devon who is one of the conspirators behind the plot to keep humans unaware of what is really going on. When Autumn demands he tell her the truth, he warns her that she better stop looking or she'll end up dead. But can she stop searching when she fears Marianne might need her? This Christian sci-fi thriller explores the possibility that conspiracy theories and Biblical prophecies are about to collide. Is this the end of the world as we know it?

Forever Open, Clear, and Free: The Struggle for Chicago's Lakefront ReviewHere is the story the subtitle suggests: Chicagoans gradually realized that the lands fronting Lake Michigan were more than mere wastelands to be utilized variously by industrialists and conventioneers, and this realization led citizens from A. Montgomery Ward down to the plainest of the plain to do battle with a series of regimes which seemed to have a very odd construction of the phrase, from the city charter, "forever open, free and clear". It is the people, not the government of Chicago, whom we should thank that parts of Grant, Jackson, and Lincoln Parks are still "open, free and clear".
Beyond her immediate theme, however, Lois Wille has written an excellent concise introduction to the history of Chicago, which will especially appeal to those who approach history from the viewpoint of non-conformism. And in a city like Chicago, you're either part of the Machine or a non-conformist.
Lois Wille was a colleague of Mike Royko, all the way from the Chicago Daily News days. She has all of his creativity and productive skepticism, and, in her own way, did just as much to worry and afflict the destructive establishmentarians who by fair means and foul seem to wind up governing the City of Chicago.Forever Open, Clear, and Free: The Struggle for Chicago's Lakefront OverviewOf the thirty miles of Lake Michigan shoreline within the city limits of Chicago, twenty-four miles is public park land. The crown jewels of its park system, the lakefront parks bewitch natives and visitors alike with their brisk winds, shady trees, sandy beaches, and rolling waves. Like most good things, the protection of the lakefront parks didn't come easy, and this book chronicles the hard-fought and never-ending battles Chicago citizens have waged to keep them "forever open, clear, and free."Illustrated with historic and contemporary photographs, Wille's book tells how Chicago's lakefront has survived a century of development. The story serves as a warning to anyone who thinks the struggle for the lakefront is over, or who takes for granted the beauty of its public beaches and parks. "A thoroughly fascinating and well-documented narrative which draws the reader into the sights, smells and sounds of Chicago's story. . . . Everyone who cares about the development of land and its conservation will benefit from reading Miss Wille's book."—Daniel J. Shannon, Architectural Forum "Not only good reading, it is also a splendid example of how to equip concerned citizens for their necessary participation in the politics of planning and a more livable environment."—Library Journal

The Hades Project (The Cotten Stone Mysteries) ReviewCotten Stone is peculiarly suited to fighting the forces of evil. By day a senior investigative correspondent for the Satellite News Network, Cotten also happens to be the mortal daughter of Furmiel, the only one of the Fallen Angels to have sought forgiveness for following Lucifer over to the dark side. In this third installment in Lynn Sholes' and Joe Moore's series of Cotten Stone mysteries, Cotten and her off-limits love interest Father John Tyler, director of the Vatican's intelligence gathering arm, uncover another fiendish plot hatched by the "old man" and his cronies. The "Hades Project" of the book's title, a marriage of modern technology and ancient religious artifact, threatens to unleash a hell on earth unless Cotten and John can do the Lord's work in time. The fate of the world is at stake, of course, but of more immediate concern is the welfare of two extraordinary children whom the bad guys need to have in their power if their diabolical scheme is to succeed.
The Hades Project, like its predecessors in the series (The Grail Conspiracy and The Last Secret), is a smoothly-written, nicely paced page-turner. The prose is transparent--which is to say that one doesn't notice it much, for good or ill, while reading, which is appropriate for the genre. The plot is not edge-of-your-seat gripping, but it definitely holds one's interest. The characters are likable but not as fleshed out as they might be. This time around the story is furthered both by the introduction of a character, one of the children, who is likely to become a fixture in the series and by--if I'm not imagining it--a ratcheting up in intensity of the just-this-side-of-licit relationship between Cotten and Father John. it will be interesting to see what happens to these characters in subsequent installments.

Nearer Than The Sky ReviewNever has a book inspired so many conflicting emotions within me as "Nearer Than The Sky". T. Greenwood, author of "Breathing Water", has penned an incredibly nuanced story of a family beset by an insidious and dangerous mental illness: Munchausen Syndrome by proxy. This relatively unknown illness goes unreported in so many cases, mostly because it's almost impossible to detect (especially in it's subtler forms), and is hard to prove in a court of law. But it's very real...as real as your baby's next breath.
This is the story of Indie Brown, a woman who wishes that her childhood had never happened. But in the way of all life, nothing is ever completely over and done with. Happily settled into adulthood with her loving and steadfast husband, Peter, Indie begins to be drawn ever so slowly backward into her past when she begins to suspect her sister Lily of causing harm to her own newborn baby. Upon this discovery, Indie realizes that their mother is the one responsible for Lily's illness, as Lily is responsible for her own daughter's mysterious sicknesses.
Writing with poetic insight and incredible subtlety, Greenwood wraps the reader up in the darkness of Munchausen Syndrome by proxy, illustrating its far-reaching effects and ultimately destructive force. Greenwood's characters are multi-dimensional and real, reacting to each crisis in wholly human ways, flawed and believable. With each breathtaking revelation, Greenwood captures the moment with startling clarity and brilliant depiction. Add "Nearer Than The Sky" to your reading list immediately, and grab the tissues. You'll need them.Nearer Than The Sky Overview

How to Love an American Man: A True Story ReviewI had to read this book for book club and I have to say it is definitely not worth your time. While the language itself was lovely, the overall message and theme was immature and not very well conceived. I kept hoping it would get better but it never did. It was way longer than it needed to be and repeated the same issue over and over again. You wanted to bang your head against the wall after she KEPT pointing out her heart ache, then in case you didn't get the memo she actually wrote something along the lines of "I had a broken heart." I found the allusions and references in the novel very sophomoric.
Also, the connection she was trying to make of her grandmother grieving over her grandfather's death comparable to her break up was unfathomable and self absorbed. There was no real crescendo or movement in the book- it was like one long magazine article from Cosmo. The best way I can describe the book is a glorified "what I did last summer" essay mixed with a self help book, written by someone without expertise. How to Love an American Man: A True Story Overview
An endearing and unforgettable memoir of love, self-discovery, and enduring, old-fashioned values

Kristine Gasbarre made a New York career of dating driven, inaccessible men. When she realizes her love life will never result in happiness if she continues on the same path, she makes a big decision-relocating to Italy to discover her roots and find out what defines her adoring grandpa. But upon receiving the news of his sudden passing, she is lured away.

With nowhere left to go, Krissy returns to her small hometown for the first time in a decade to help care for her grandmother-a refined, private matriarch suf?fering from early dementia along with the loss of her husband. In her reluctant agreement to share the nearly lost love stories and transformative lessons from her rich sixty-year marriage, Krissy's grandma becomes the one of?fering comfort as she coaches her granddaughter through the fear of loving. Grandma's unapologetic femininity and secret giving spirit opens Krissy's eyes about relationships, teaching her the single most important requisite for loving a man: first a woman has to learn the power of her own inner beauty.

Death Benefits ReviewI've been a fan of Thomas Perry's work since his first book, Butcher's Boy. Perry is one of the rare writers who never inflicts himself on his material, but rather allows the characters to evolve and speak for themselves. His writing is spare, never cluttered, and his characters are always fully realized and highly distinctive. Death Benefits is a fine example of a writer at peak form. Aside from a truly intriguing plot line that extrapolates on the possibilities of misusing life insurance that have not (at least to my knowledge) previously been explored, we have a central character who, at the age of twenty-four, grows up within the pages of this book--ably and entertainingly pulled along by the fascinating Stillman and the clever Serena. What I particularly liked about the character of Stillman, aside from his ingenuity, is his humor and wisdom. There's a lot of truth about life, and about the process of personal growth in these pages. Much as I enjoyed it, though, I found the "bad guys" to be rather an implausible creation. That said, this is a thoughtful and entertaining book, and the last hundred pages of Death Benefits make for a breathless ride. Highly recommended.Death Benefits Overview
