Faith of Cranes: Finding Hope and Family in Alaska ReviewWhen I sat sat down to write this review after reading The Faith of Cranes (for a second time), it began as a detailed, multi-paragraph effort to describe how important such a wrenching, tender tale of death, loss, hope and love can be in a world beset by the seemingly inevitable loss of environmental integrity to the juggernaut of development, and how well the author tells it. I went on and on about how heartbreaking and poetic, grinding and glorious, painful and uplifting Lentfer's story is, until the words began to whirl together in a cacophony like that of a thousand cranes croaking and calling as they leap into the air and rise into a spiraling gyre.
And my original excess verbiage was completely unnecessary, because any reader who has ever cared deeply about a wilderness, the fate of our fellow creatures, his or her family, friends, mate, or a child, will find their own nuggets to cherish in this quiet, lovely book.
