When Money Talks: Buford Tucker Listens ReviewI just finished it and I really, really enjoyed it. I've read everything by John Grisham and this is as good as anything he's written. It's hard to believe that this is Danny's first book. This book is extremely thought provoking and brings to light how our government operates. When Money Talks: Buford Tucker Listens Overview

The Malacca Conspiracy ReviewIt's the Fourth of July, and rather fitting that I've just turned the final page of Don Brown's new geopolitical thriller, The Malacca Conspiracy, as the book has a decidedly patriotic feel. With our nation's capital, Washington, DC, as one-quarter of the exotic, landscape quartet along with the far-flung destinations of Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, Mr. Brown has the reader traveling the globe without ever having to leave the comfort of her bedroom slippers.
And true to form, the rockets glare and the fireworks explode off each page of this novel leaving me satiated, but still wanting more. From reading all five of Mr. Brown's novels, I have discovered that he is the master of the plot, moving the story along seamlessly with grace and detail, and the skill of the masters of his time. He had me chomping at the bit to know what was going to happen next.
The book has something for everyone. With a flair for the dramatic and penchant for sniffing out percolating controversy, Don Brown keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. Gentleman readers will love the high-stakes action and the geopolitical implications. Although the author has a knack for seeing the future having predicted the 2008 shooting war between Russia and Georgia in his novel, Black Sea Affair, I hope his crystal ball is on the fritz this time around, and our country is safe from the any of his fictional fireworks.
As for the ladies, don't be fooled by political and military undertones. The author has brought back two popular characters from his first three books in The Navy Justice Series, Zack Brewer and Diane Colcernian, and the sexual tension between the two sizzles like the burgers and dogs on your grill. Happy 4th and enjoy this and all four other Don Brown novels. The Malacca Conspiracy Overview

Double Blind ReviewDouble Blind is the third entry into the Henry Lightstone series by Ken Goddard. Goddard seems to be slipping with each succesive entry in the series. Goddard started with an idea that had a lot to offer, but in the end the result is disappointing. Lightstone and his team of Federal Wildlife Agents are set up for elimination by a crack team of ex-military "hunter-killers". Lightstone is a good character and he is surrounded by an interesting cast of characters. Goddard's experience in Law Enforcement is readily apparent in his writing. The story begins to drag when Lightstone's team attempts to set up their undercover operation. Goddard spends a great deal of time with this device and it does nothing to progress the story. Goddard continually refers to Lightstone as the team's "wild-card agent", along with several other similar monikers, throughout the story and it really begins to grate on your nerves. I was left feeling cheated with a quick ending that tied-up all of the loose ends too easily. Goddard spent 450+ pages setting up a showdown which never materialized. Double Blind was not Goddard at his best, but he is still a lot better than many of the authors in this genre. Readers interested in Goodard's better books should read Balefire, Cheater, and Prey.Double Blind Overview

Alvarado Gold ReviewMs. Pitts-Caine does an excellent job bringing to life a family mystery, adding in history along with biblical references. I appreciate the author's ability to create a good story in such a way that adults can enjoy it, but the book can be left out for the teenage grandchildren if they choose to read it.
I hope to see more books in the near future from this refreshing author. Her attention to details shows she spent her time well during her research of this era.Alvarado Gold OverviewAfter the reading of her grandfather's will, Addie Brown and her cousins discover clues to the location of long-ago buried treasure. A Question of Consequence ReviewMatthew Sterling is a recent Brigham Young University law school graduate and the assistant city manager of Snow Ridge, Utah, a small community in the Wasatch Front. Julia Wells is the newly elected mayor of this predominantly Mormon community. Upon entering the duties of their respective offices, Matt comes to find himself entangled in a web of City Hall corruption. Should Matt "go along to get along" or should he put his reputation, and perhaps his life, on the line. Will Julie believe him or will she believe the supposedly good LDS men who have set out to destroy his credibility? Matt's own tangled life is reflected in a similar situation of an ancestor of his, a Revolutionary War hero when he discovers the personal journal of Major Andrew McBride. The stories of Matt and Andrew are woven together into an impressive and memorable climax. A Question Of Consequence is as thoughtfully reflective as it is engagingly entertaining reading and document Gordon Ryan as a writer of skill and originality.A Question of Consequence Overview

1080 Kiss Review1080 Kiss is a very entertaining read involving the romance of Morgan and Vince, both strong-minded individuals who have not previously been happy in love. The two meet when Morgan is hired to manage Vince's snowboarding career. Vince has all the potential in the world as he is very talented, but his unreliable and sometimes troublesome personality has prevented him from rising to the top.
The plot is full of surprises as Vince's rival becomes enamored with Morgan, and even a rock star gets involved as the story unfolds. The romance in 1080 Kiss is one that you root for as you grow fond of both characters. One point that meant a lot to me is the theme supports healthy relationships as opposed to self-deprecating ones.
The writing style is smooth with lots of beautiful descriptions. Having enjoyed snow skiing in the past, I loved reliving the vivid scenery in Steed's story. She is a very talented writer, and I look forward to her future releases.
--Lewis Aleman, author of The Anti-Vampire Tale, Faces in Time: A Time Travel Thriller, and Cold Streak1080 Kiss OverviewThe "God of Snow" has met his match. He never followed the rules. Vince Evans, professional snowboarder, is a black-haired, green-eyed charmer no woman can tame and no man can match on the slopes. Followed by a flurry of bad publicity and a trail of ex-managers, his Olympic dreams teeter on the brink unless he can orchestrate a career turnaround. And fast. Her rules were unbendable. After a year-long hiatus, public relations extraordinaire Morgan Price is ready to resume her high-profile job resurrecting musicians fallen from grace. A bad-boy athlete is not the type of client she expects-or wants. But then she sees a side of the "God of Snow" no one has seen before, a side she just might break all the rules of business for.Reviews and Other Information:"Angela Steed has crafted a shining gem of a contemporary romance novel with characters so believable they could have stepped off the pages at any moment and joined me for a cup of coffee." Kimberly Adkins Author of THE MEDALLION OF SOLAUS"1080 Kiss is anything but chilly.Morgan and Vince are very realistic characters with problems and pain in their pasts. The story is smooth and refreshing with dialogue that is smart and snappy. The emotions throughout the story are raw and vivid bringing the reader closer to the characters.Ms. Steed's first novel is very well done."Bonnie Petros Coffee Time Romance "I loved this book! I have never read Ms. Angela Steed before, but I will definitely look for her work. This contemporary romance was sensual, but not erotic. The Justice Game ReviewBased on a real-life case attorney Randy Singer tried ten years ago, The Justice Game artfully portrays both sides of the gun rights debate. Interestingly, Singer didn't set out to convert anyone. He told me, "I wanted to write a book so balanced that both sides would look at it and say, `That fairly represents our case.'"
The Justice Game opens in TV news reporter Rachel Crawford's point of view. A crazed gunman named Larry Jamison, the subject of a scathing news report, barges into the studio and shoots Rachel dead. The crime is clearly caught on film, but it's not the killer who ends up in court during The Justice Game. Rachel's grieving husband sues the manufacturer of Jamison's assault weapon for her wrongful death. He believes they are responsible since they knew the gun store who sold the weapon was known for illegal straw sales.
But this story isn't about Rachel as much as it's about young and ambitious defense attorney Jason Noble and up-and-coming prosecutor Kelly Starling. Both believe in their clients. Both are on top of their games. And both have pasts worthy of blackmail. Mix in the intriguing concept of a cutting edge company who predicts the outcome of trials for financial gain using shadow juries, and you have a true Randy Singer plot--full of delightful twists and turns you never saw coming.
Pay careful attention during the beginning chapters. Because so many of these concepts are unfamiliar, and many key players aren't introduced until later in the story, there's the potential for confusion. But there's also a great glimpse into the fascinating aspects of shadow juries and we come to understand why gun control is such a visceral issue to so many. At times you'll find yourself nodding in agreement with the defense as they present their case; then you'll empathize with the prosecution as they present theirs. Which just goes to show Singer has succeeded in what he set out to write--a novel that evenly presented both sides.
The Justice Game doesn't feel like an issue novel. We're never pounded over the head with its message. Instead, we're subtly led to our own conclusions as we examine the facts. Should a gun manufacturer be held responsible for a crime committed with one of their guns?
Before Singer finished writing The Justice Game a four minute interactive promotional video was created that presented the closing arguments of his fictional case. Then readers were asked to cast their vote on the verdict, and that would become the ending of the book. Their decision would be final. According to Randy the side that started out ahead stayed ahead.
Randy singer is one of the best Christian legal thriller writers out there in the purest sense. His complex plot spins and colorful, realistic characters combine to bring us a rich reading experience in The Justice Game.

PARADISE MARRED ReviewThis is my 3rd Robert Hardin book featuring the Attorney David Armstrong. His writing improves with each one and this is the best so far. I believe this is the 5th in the seris of David Armstrong and I have read the last 3, Paradise Marred, Federal Offense and Imperfect Crimes. His main characters and their relationships continue to develop throughout the series. Definetly worth your time!PARADISE MARRED OverviewTop-flight criminal attorney, David Armstrong, takes on the case of a man kidnapped from Mexico by the FBI and returned to San Francisco to be charged with the murder of his wife nine years earlier. While David rails against the FBI's illegal actions in court, his lover, Felicia Bates-Baxter, California's senior U.S. Senator, attacks the President and his Administration for the usurpation of our civil rights in the wake of 9/11. The twin causes of David and Felicia require them to put their careers, and maybe even their very lives, at risk.

Field of Blackbirds ReviewThis book is addictive! By the time Sebastion (the main character) tells his unlucky adversary, "Hell awaits," I was completely hooked! This book is packed with history, intrigue, and plenty of action. The author moves the storyline expertly along, building up different parts of the story until it all collides beautifully. Sebastion gets in trouble at the beginning, though a good and honorable young man, and this story tells of how he finds a new start in the French Foreign Legion. His further specialized training with Spetsnaz, and the "high-speed" operations he goes on show his character, and provide an awesome storyline. This story reminds me of a cross between The DaVinci Code and The Kingdom. Buy this book, all of my friend who have read it LOVE it, too.Field of Blackbirds OverviewAs America 's eyes focus on the Middle East , ghosts of battlefields past stir. When Professor Jean Pierre Fournier, with the University of Paris, Sorbonne, makes a discovery among the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement in Kosovo, the winds of war fill the sails of Serbian nationalism once again. Bringing Kosovo back into the fold of Greater Serbia will take planning, timing, and national solidarity; the discovery is the key. The artifact, however, falls into the hands of unsuspecting Intensive Care nurse Stephanie Boulanger, who is now running for her life. Sebastian Bishop was the all American boy growing up in rural South Carolina . At age 18, his life changed forever when he was convicted of Second Degree murder for killing the man who attacked his sister. From the solitary confinement of prison to the unforgiving training ground of the legendary French Foreign Legion, Sebastian is forged into an instrument of warfare. Sebastian's skill, and the guile of an international cast of characters, will be put to the test as they try to avert Word War III on the Field of Blackbirds.Stephanie and Sebastian's paths cross in a life and death struggle that pits them against the infamous Black Hand, the secret Serbian Society thought long gone. Hang on for a roller coaster ride of suspense, action and intrigue that culminates on the Field of Blackbirds.

The Stallion ReviewThe Stallion is fairly a new novel compared with others written by the Harold Robbins. Once again, Robbins has proved his genius skill as a story teller. The Stallion revolves around the guy Angelo Perino, who is gathers his life after being dumped by the company he worked for, and takes his revenge. Don't forget to add lots of sex, money, and luxuries that only Harold Robbins can imagine vividly. Though I read the so called prequel "The Betsy" after reading "The Stallion", you actually don't miss much of any storyline, so even if you have not read "The Betsy" it is ok to go ahead and read this book.
My all time favorite is "Dreams Die First" and "The Stallion" comes second. If you are a fan of Robbins (like me), then don't look any further, grab a copy and read it.

What's A Woman To Do ReviewIn What's A Woman To Do? by Maritza P. Brown, readers get a glimpse into the lives of Alex Avery and Journey Moore. These two friends are dealing with different issues within their lives. Both must face their problems and fears to acquire the happiness they surely deserve.
Alex Avery is a business consultant whose drive will help her rise to the top. She is also a loving mother who shares a unique relationship with her daughter's father, Steven McCoy. Alex and Steven's relationship takes a turn once she meets Derek Minor. Derek and Alex's attraction to each other is unmistakable and both fall head over heels in love. However, Derek is keeping a secret from Alex that will change everything.
Journey Moore is the co-owner of a fitness gym with her husband, Tony. They seem to be a loving couple but looks can be deceiving. Journey is trying to deal with the issues in her marriage. When her friend, Alex, asks her to accompany her on a trip to Vegas, Journey jumps at the chance to get away and clear her head. Journey's getaway vacation will involve more than she expects.
What's A Woman To Do is a book about unusual relationships. The author provides readers with drama, deception, and sums it up with the unveiling of secrets. The twist in the story was unsuspected making the reveal much more exciting. I recommend What's A Woman To Do to others.

What's A Woman To Do OverviewAlex Avery and Journey Moore's stagnant love relationships are unexpectedly tested when they each, upon happenstance, meet two men, who seem to incredibly possess all of the qualities the women seek in their perfect mates. Yet, it is soon realized that no one is perfect when the women discover that their knights in shining armor are closely connected to their current lovers.
Alex Avery, a career-driven, savvy-business consultant, and her daughter's father, Steven "Sway" McCoy, maintain a unique 'friends-with-benefi ts' relationship that suddenly comes to a halt after Alex is introduced to and immediately captivated by Derek Minor, a handsome, ex-thug turned legitimate businessman. Alex and Derek connect on every level to solidify the kind of relationship she yearns for, and, as time passes, he appears to be the man of her dreams. Derek, however, is keeping a secret from his past that may prove him to not only be too good to be true, but could sever the unique relationship Alex shares with Sway, forever.
Journey and her husband Tiny own and manage a fi tness gym and live comfortably, and, on the surface, appear to be the picture perfect couple. Yet, behind closed doors, Journey is the helpless recipient of Tiny's verbal and physical abuse. When Journey starts to suspect that Tiny is being unfaithful, Journey decides that she has had enough. And, with the help of an enticing, sexy, younger man, Journey rediscovers her self-worth as well as her explosive sexuality. Yet, she knows that in order to be set free, Tiny would have to let her go, which she knows he will not do willingly, especially since Journey's younger lover is the son of his best friend.
"Provocative, exciting, and intriguing. Maritza is a genius."

The Second Compound Review
I was very impressed after reading Blink's first novel "Timelines". I had hoped he would write another book. "The Second Compound" is that book and is an enjoyable read. In a number of ways this book surpassed the first novel since the story is easily related to current times and a particular location in the US. The book is hard to put down and go to sleep, you want to keep reading all night. Action is outstanding, relevant to the times and believable. The characters cover the whole scope of the good as well as the shady side of human life. His understanding of and the use of various types of weapons is excellent. Rick's (the main character) dealings with domestic law enforcement and the behind the scenes maneuverings holds ones attention. The only criticism I have of the book is that the ending came a little fast but was highly surprising. Blink has rapidly moved on to my list of authors for whom I eagerly await the next book to be published. I hope that there are more to come, and soon. The Second Compound OverviewRick Berkman returned home after learning Jerry, his long time friend and combat buddy, had suddenly disappeared. After weeks of frustrating failure to find a reason, or a clue as to who might be behind the disappearance, Rick learns almost by accident that a hometown friend of Jerry's had been killed only a week after meeting with him.Convinced the two events must be related somehow, Rick decides to seek out the sister of Jerry's murdered friend in hopes she might be able to shed light on the mystery. In doing so, he meets Jenny, a beautiful and resourceful young woman, who is trying to understand her brother's death.Working together, Rick and Jenny begin to learn the secrets linking the two events.Jenny's brother Sam had been a senior researcher at the University of California at Berkeley where he stumbled across a miraculous new chemical compound representing a major medical breakthrough. The new compound is potentially worth hundreds of millions to any company that can find the means to synthesize it, and the theft of his research might be the ultimate cause of Jerry's disappearance and Sam's death. As they continue their search for the people behind the murders, they learn that Sam had hidden the secrets of his discovery for Jenny to find, and they begin to follow the trail to pick up the dispersed clues that Sam had carefully concealed. The trip takes them halfway across the country, including a stop in Jenny's hometown of Pierre, South Dakota. As they learn more, Sam's notes tell them of the existence of a second compound, supposedly with abilities even more miraculous than the first. As they begin to unravel the secrets of Sam's work, their lives are in danger from those who want the secrets for themselves.Trying to find the answers, while avoiding attempts on their lives, brings the two full circle back to Berkeley, where the true plot is revealed.

The Sixteenth Man ReviewAs a mystery novelist with my debut novel in initial release, I make numerous promotional appearances around the country. Recently, I was in Dallas, and THE SIXTEENTH MAN'S author Thomas Sawyer was also on the same convention program. During some free time, Tom suggested I take my daughter to the Sixth Floor Museum, a Dallas museum concerned with the JFK assassination, as is Mr. Sawyer's novel THE SIXTEENTH MAN. My daughter and I enjoyed the museum, and I have since enjoyed Mr. Sawyer's novel. It is a fascinating tale of two interlocking stories. In 1963, PI Charlie Callan, while working a domestic surveillance case, finds his life endangered when he is linked to a certain murder-conspiracy. In time present, sixteen male skeletons are discovered by researcher Matthew Packard. Fifteen are ancient, more ancient than any human remains ever before found in North America. The sixteenth is recent, and Packard finds himself suddenly plunged into a dangerous world of fast-paced action and life-threatening twists, surprisingly linked to the JFK assassination. Mr. Sawyer has written a terrific thriller. The Sixteenth Man OverviewFast-paced, sexy, full of action, vivid, uncommon characters and surprising twists, The Sixteenth Man plays out in two parallel, interwoven stories that come together in an exciting climax on a desolate ledge high above Moab, Utah.

In late 1963, Reno Private Investigator Charlie Callan embarks on a routine domestic surveillance case. When it sends him instead into a labyrinth of deception, mortal danger—and the murder-conspiracy of the last century, Charlie is faced with moral and personal decisions for which there are no right answers.

In present time, in the mountains near Moab, Archaeologist Matthew Packard unearths an ancient tomb containing sixteen male skeletons. Fifteen of them are dramatically older than any human remains ever found in the Americas. But it's the more recent, anonymous sixteenth skeleton that triggers alarms from D.C. to Langley to New Orleans – plunging Packard into a web of vicious killers and long-hidden secrets. He finds himself falling in love with a beautiful young woman, and to save her life and his own, Packard must solve the mystery of the Sixteenth Man and its astonishing connection to the murder of President John F. Kennedy."...[An] outstanding first novel...If many more thrillers this good appear in the books-on-demand format, the world of publishing will be turned upside down..."—Ellery Queen Magazine"...a complex, brilliantly plotted thriller..."—The Malibu Times

The CEO ReviewI don't know who wrote the great reviews. The book is dreadful. If you can suspend disbelief and not get annoyed by things like 'shaking his head' when the writer means 'nodding his head', and someone putting mascara on their face to cover up bruising (lol), and the lust every character has for killing everyone, and the total incompetence of professional law enforcers and supposed top notch security guys, and the shallow characters - then you might be able to stomach it.
Not recommended. The CEO Overview"The CEO" is a fast paced corporate thriller of loves come and gone, innovation, resilience, corporate philanthropy, vision, and deception. Corporate business leaders are protected by their own small armies of private security whose power will surprise. The story takes the reader behind the scenes and into the back office meetings of both corporations and countries; travelling from Denver to New York to London to Bogota and to Paris. As Mitch and his team of loyalists' race against time they are faced with constant revelation of threats against the company and those involved; including the life of the woman that Mitch falls deeply in love with. The depth of the plot reveals a 200 year old secret between two of the world's most powerful countries. If the secret is revealed it could destroy the balance of power in the world. Though, if the secret stays protected it could crush all that Mitch Jacobs desires. Although Mitch Jacobs never questions his ability to conquer the current forces against him, it is a race to answer the questions:Will Mitch be able to discover who is leading the attack on him before it is too late?Is this conspiracy the result of the usual corporate competition or does it emanate from the power hungry executives in his company? What interest do certain world leaders have in this plot that will destroy all that Mitch has built? Most important Mitch has fallen in love with two women whose essence and similarities (and differences) of character lead him on his mission

End of State: Now All the Rules Have Changed (Left Behind Political) ReviewLike the Left Behind series, End of State is an easy read, that clearly spells out likely events of the last days of a world where Christians have disappeared, and the Devil and his legions are given free reign. Focusing on the United States, Ness examines how people here might interpret the disappearances and the rise of an evil Antichrist figure. As the plot progresses, a small band of characters come together. They realize that the premillenial rapture and coming Great Tribulation are upon them, and that they must do what they can in their positions of political influence to spread the Christian story to as many as possible.
I am a Christian with an interest in current affairs and politics, so I had high hopes for this off-shoot of Left Behind. The book has a decent plot and interesting characters. However, people seemed to spend a lot of time talking about what was happening. The pacing was generally sluggish, with short bursts of action, followed by lengthy analayses.
The audience for this book appears different from Left Behind. Ness spends much time exploring the inner struggles of church people who tagged along with believers, but never converted until after the Rapture. Non-Christians, who have been drawn to Left Behind for its action-oriented and simple explications of the end times, may find it much harder to relate to End of State.
Bottom-line: This is a solid, well-written end times novel, best suited for Christians who have always wondered, "Just how will people react to the Rapture--especially church people who never became true believers?" Those wishing to introduce non-Christians to End Times ideas would do better to stick with Left Behind, or perhaps Apocalypse Dawn.End of State: Now All the Rules Have Changed (Left Behind Political) OverviewFrom the back rooms of the U.S. government to the world stage of the United Nations, End of State explores the world of politics and government as it is changed forever by the Rapture.
This new series, combining the explosiveness of the Left Behind universe with the immediacy of West Wing-style political thrills, takes the Rapture and ratchets up the tension to a fever pitch. Written by political insider Neesa Hart, who has won prestigious awards both for her writing and for her youth ministry in churches across America.

Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him ReviewAlton Gansky is the master of on-the-edge, what-if fiction, and this is his best work yet. It features a character based on the Biblical Enoch, the man who didn't die, now returned to earth to deliver a message, a message that gives pause to all who hear it. There's plenty of action, a number of heart-tugging moments, building suspense, and a denouement that kept me reading long after my bedtime. It's rare that I say of a book, "I couldn't put it down," but this is one of those times.
The book is doesn't hit the reader over the head with the message of Christianity. It simply makes him think. And, after all, isn't that what books should really do?Enoch: He lived long ago. He never died. Now the most powerful woman in the world is trying to own him Overview

Persuader: A Reacher Novel ReviewI read one of Lee Child's books and was so struck with his character, Jack Reacher, and the lean, elegant style of Child's writing that I read all seven novels nonstop.
Since this is his newest novel, it might be the first one you find, but I believe you will enjoy the series more if you track down the first volume, "Killing Floor," and then read each of the seven in succession.
In "Persuader," Jack Reacher has the jolting discovery of evil nemesis Ouinn's existence, whom Reacher thought he had eliminated a decade ago. To be ultimately rid of Quinn, Reacher faces a dual challenge -- penetrate an organized crime operation and aid the Federal government in the rescue of one of its agents.
Reacher's engaging narration is a combination of strategic thinking and forceful explosion, which is a brilliant juxtaposition. Jack Reacher is a loner, without fear, and without surrender - and his intense drive will lead him to settle the score.
Tension, mayhem, and action are propelled throughout Child's novels. This is definitely among the finest adventure fiction being written in America today.Persuader: A Reacher Novel Overview

Expiation ReviewExpiation is a romantic rekindling between high school sweethearts.
Dan was the All-American dream boy in high school. Great at football, decent grades, popular, had a perfect girlfriend and great friends and family around him. His plans included graduating high school, attending Berkley in San Francisco studying Journalism, working an internship for the Chronicle and marrying the girl of his dreams.
Katie was the All-American dream girl in high school. She was a friendly, beautiful cheerleader and girlfriend to Dan. She was going to go to school for a year in Seattle and join Dan after he got situated in San Francisco where they planned to build their future together.
However, the course that life flows had other plans and the two drift apart and marry other people and lead their lives separately. On the day that Dan's mother dies, the two meet again after 30 years. The sparks fly and the two try to determine what path their future shall take. Will their love be rekindled so that the two can spend the rest of their lives together? Or will the fates continue to keep them and their love apart?
I didn't mind this read. I liked Katie and enjoyed reading about her. She was personable, likeable and determined. I wasn't as impressed with Dan however. After leaving her with many promises, in which he continuously broke, he walks back into Katie's life with arrogance. I didn't like how he spoke to her upon their first initial meeting. He hasn't seen the woman in over thirty years and proceeds to oogle and salvitate over her. It would make me uncomfortable to have a man talk to me in such a manner, especially one who left me without any explanations and a load of heartache.
I did like how Dan remembers the memory of his deceased wife, Wendy. Even though he has always loved Katie, his memories and heartache are real and I was pleased to see this. I also liked the interactions between Dan and his daughter, Vickie.
I felt that the dialogue was a bit cliched and would've enjoyed seeing something new and fresh in the handling of Dan and Katie's reunion. I also thought having them meet again after 30 years at Dan's mothers funeral to be a bit tacky.
I liked the background history of events that occurred, such as the WTO protest that broke out in Seattle in the late 1990's or the Zodiac Killer which plagued San Fran in the 70's. I equally enjoyed reading about the Y2K scare that folks were going through at the time of the books setting. I never felt that Y2K would amount to anything and to see the panic mongers as they were written was comical to me. I remember the talk at the time and many of the things shared were quite similar.
I found that the read was easy and the flow was great. The editorial issues were infrequent and didn't hinder the read in any way. If you are a romance reader and especially enjoy those stories about long lost loves, then this book will be enjoyable for all who read such.Expiation Overview

Harbor ReviewThere's no question that we need a novel like Lorraine Adams' HARBOR, an attempt to recount the experiences of a group of Middle Eastern immigrants in America pre-9/11. I admired much of the writing in this book, but I thought Adams' inability to bring life to her protagonist at certain key points prevented this book from fully working for me.
Some of the strongest scenes are early on, where Aziz (an ex-soldier from Algeria) jumps off a ship and swims into Boston Harbor. Of course, Aziz doesn't know the language and isn't in good health, and Adams does a wonderful job conveying his sensory disassociation from the world around him. Aziz never really loses that disassociation though, it's as if he spends much of the novel with earplugs on. Even when he's reunited with friends and later his brother, and begins to suss out what he thinks may be a terrorist plot, Aziz seems remarkably casual about what's happening. We also get flashbacks to Aziz's life in Algeria, where he - mistaken for another man - falls in with a band of mercenaries before escaping....again, Aziz seems carried along by events. Anyone not familar with Algerian politics will have a hard time figuring out some of these scenes.
I thought the end of the book was the weakest, as point-of-view ping pongs between several characters, including the FBI, and characters from early in the book are suddenly reintroduced.
Still, I think HARBOR is a very promising debut, and I hope Adams continues to tackle subjects of such relevance.Harbor Overview
