The Maggody Militia (Arly Hanks Mystery) ReviewAs a long time Maggody reader, I found this book to be a welcome addition to an already entertaining series. Reading Ms. Hess is like eating peanuts - one always leads to another until the bag is empty. In this book, large events in the news are portrayed in the small scale frame of Maggody, Arkansas. Her ability to find humor in life's most frustrating of circumstances is a gift I'm glad she is willing to share. Many times series books get stale after a while, but Ms. Hess' books just get better. It seems she is getting to know these people as long time friends, just as I am. Please write more! I'm waiting! The Maggody Militia (Arly Hanks Mystery) Overview

The Da Vinci Cook: An Angie Amalfi Mystery (Angie Amalfi Mysteries) ReviewTrouble seems to follow Angie Amalfi no matter where she goes. When her strict-laced sister, Caterina Swenson, calls her and says she is pursuing a witness to a murder, Angie rushes to help her. What follows is a madcap chase through Rome for Angie and Cat while Homicide Inspector Paavo Smith, Angie's fiancé, is back in America trying to sort out the murder scene and deal with the Amalfi family. Angie and Cat are determined to find the missing witness (who is also Cat's client), Marcello Piccoletti, locate a missing relic, and clear Cat's name.
What a delicious story! Ms. Pence writes such a delightful tale with very vividly drawn characters that it is hard not to immediately get wrapped up in the craziness surrounding the Amalfi family. The Amalfi family lives by the adage that family sticks together so once it becomes apparent that Cat and Angie are in trouble, the whole family swoops in to help. Sometimes, this leads to quite interesting and hysterical scenes. Perhaps Frannie's ordeal with bureaucracy is the best scene but there are numerous laugh-out-loud moments in this fantastic story.
It has been awhile since I have read one of the Angie Amalfi mysteries from Joanne Pence, and after reading this one I'm wondering why. Perhaps what made this tale much more enjoyable for me is that Angie's angst over her career and her continued mishaps weren't as apparent. Instead, we are treated with seeing the entire Amalfi family in action. Joanne Pence has created such a loving, richly diverse family in the Amalfis and I relished every moment spent with them in this book. There is never a dull moment as the action flows smoothly along. THE DA VINCI COOK is simply divine!
COURTESY OF CK2S KWIPS AND KRITIQUESThe Da Vinci Cook: An Angie Amalfi Mystery (Angie Amalfi Mysteries) OverviewAngie Amalfi is close to one of the biggest breaks of her rocky culinary career––a chance to co–write a cookbook with a famous chef. But as she scrambles to prepare for the impending interview, her realtor sister Cat is suddenly accused of a murder in a rich client's home. A priceless relic––an iron chain that was used to bind St. Peter while in a Roman prison––is missing from her wealthy client Marcello Piccoletti's home, and a murder was committed on the heels of the disappearance. The only person who can clear Cat's name is the client himself, and he's in Rome, tending to his restaurant, Da Vinci's. Heedless to Angie's stern warning, the always unpredictable Cat insists on traveling to Rome to confront Picoletti, and Angie must drop everything to accompany her sister. The Roman restaurateur has the chain with him in Rome, and exonerates Cat of the murder as well. Unfortunately, the police in the states still suspect Cat and now Picoletti, the only witness, has disappeared. Angie takes a job as a cook at Da Vinci's, hoping to get to the bottom of this complex mess. And when bodies start piling up like balls of fresh mozzarella at an Amalfi family picnic, it looks like Angie and Cat's trip to their homeland may spell arrivederci Amalfis.

The Bee Balm Murders: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries) ReviewAs soon as I finish one I look forward to the next Victoria Trumbull mystery, but this one was disappointing. The story was okay, but 99% of the characters were just for this book. The regular characters had a cameo appearance or none at all. Victoria was just stumbling around and things fell into place. Her granddaughter that lives in the house was invisible. Casey had learned in the past to pay attention to Victoria, but just pushed her away this time. There was no feeling of the character we have known in the past as Casey. Victoria's thinking was clouded by Lyme disease and antibiotics. This lasted the whole book. Instead of bringing in someone who worked with the new characters get her a native teenage helper that can dance around the computer and teach Victoria a bit of how to surf the web. I hope the next book is back to the original standards. The Bee Balm Murders: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries) OverviewThe one-of-a-kind sleuth Victoria Trumbull must solve another puzzling mystery on Martha's Vineyard, her Island home. It's spring on the Island, and at the suggestion of her beekeeper, Victoria takes in a new boarder, Orion Nanopoulos. Orion is leading a project to lay a fiber-optic cable across the island. When a body is found in the trench where they are laying the cable, Orion tells Victoria he recognizes the dead man as someone who was a potential investor. Victoria, renowned for her skill at solving crimes and for her knowledge about the Island's residents, is hired by the dead man's sons to investigate the murder. The Bee Balm Murders is the tenth entry in this delightful cozy series. Boasting a unique heroine, an eccentric cast, and beautiful descriptions of Martha's Vineyard, it's sure to please fans and create new ones.

The Accidental Florist (Jane Jeffry Mysteries, No. 16) ReviewI love Jane and Shelley. I wanted to love this book. Really I did. For the past ten years, I have waited for each new book to come out so I could savor every page. I have read every book in this series over the years and I have to admit, the last few have been a little disappointing, but this one should be an embarrasment to the author.
This "mystery" doesn't seem to be a mystery at all, but rather a mindless list of how to add a room to your house, pick the right fabric swatch for a wedding and change cat litter pans. Even worse than this boring grocery list of pointless actions, there are glaring contradictions in the story. First Jane is glad she changed the litter pans when the architect comes over and then, five pages later, she's buying litter pans becasue the cats have been "outside " cats that have forgotten how to use them.
I sincerely hope this is the last installment of the series because it was terrible. It makes me very sad to see what once was a delightful series slide into such junk. It makes me sad also to see an author, with an established name and publishing career, submit a book like this to the marketplace and actually take people's money for it. I would rather imagine Jane and Shelly somewhere actually solving a mystery than to see the characters turned into boring ninnies. If the author can do no better than this, I hope she will do the ethical thing, put down the pen and stop preying on those of us who have been faithful readers over the years.
The Accidental Florist (Jane Jeffry Mysteries, No. 16) Overview
Here comes the bride!

Suburban supersleuth Jane Jeffry and her detective beau Mel VanDyne have finally decided to tie the knot. While Jane's planning the wedding of her dreams—with no overbearing mother-in-law to steamroll the entire event and tell her what to wear—Mel convinces her and her best friend Shelley to take a women's self-defense class. But before Jane and Shelley can learn the karate kicks and mean moves to fight off even the perfect purse-snatcher, their class is cut brutally short . . . when two participants are murdered.

Between her new writing project, an addition to the house, and battling mothers-in-law, she's got her hands full. But she'll have to make time to help Mel find the killer if she wants to walk happily—and safely—down the aisle.

Murder With All the Trimmings: Josie Marcus, Mystery Shopper ReviewI have all of Elaine Viets mystery shopper and dead end job mysteries and I love them all. I have to say by far, this is the best of the mystery shopper series. I have noticed that more and more mystery series are going for holiday themes, i.e. Joanna Carl's The Chocolate Snowman Murders and Shirley Murphy's 2007 Cat Deck the Halls Joe Grey Mystery. I cannot speak for the Murphy mystery as I have not read it yet, but I can safely say Viets beats out Carl's Snowman Murders for the better holiday mystery.
Josie Marcus is a loveable protaganist as a single mom and amateur sleuth and the recurring cast of characters is what holds the wonderful series together. In this book, Josie is soured on Christmas because she feels that she has been looking at holiday decorations since Labor Day, but when she is ordered to mystery shop two of the three holiday stores that have cropped up or lose her job, she does what any good mystery shopper would do, sucks it up, hopes for the best and brings a witness. The second shop is owned by her current boyfriend's rather colorful ex who would be more at home in a Halloween store than a Christmas shop. The experience is exactly what Josie expects and she writes an honest report, which as expected complicates everything. Viets doesn't stop there, she adds Josie's daughter's father into the mix who has recently been released from Canadian prison, where he has been serving a sentence for drug dealing.
What I love about the book, besides that it's Christmas-y, is that even though there are several complex issues being addressed, it never gets messy that it feels like Viets forgets what she's doing and the plot never bogs down. The end of the book is wrapped up like a tidy Christmas package and leaves me waiting eagerly for the next book in series, just as it should. If you're a fan of the mystery shopper series, you definitely want to add this to your collection and if you're just starting, I suggest you begin with the first book in the series and I promise you'll be clamoring for this one.Murder With All the Trimmings: Josie Marcus, Mystery Shopper OverviewA humbug of a Shopping mystery... From The Anthony and Agatha Award-Winning Author of Accessory to MurderIncludes insider shopping tips! Mystery shopper Josie Marcus doesn't get the appeal of the year-round Christmas shop. But when three such holiday houses pop up within two blocks, she's assigned to rate them anonymously. Easy enough, Josie thinks, until she realizes that shoppers at one store are finding a strange—even deadly—secret ingredient in their holiday cake. And Josie must get to the bottom of it all before someone else becomes a Christmas spirit.

A House to Die For (A Darby Farr Mystery) Review"A House to Die For" by Vicki Doudera is one of those rare gems in fiction that the reader doesn't want to end. Doudera has done an exceptional job in character development, exciting pace and unexpected twists of plot. Her prose is well written, accessible and at times, very funny. Still lurking below the pockets of grins lies a darker tale...one that draws the reader in further and further, around a labyrinth of interwoven sub-plots. Before the reader knows it, she has followed the writer down the rabbit hole and into the minds of the characters. Far from being one dimensional, or at the other extreme so prevalent in mystery fiction, too frantic a pace, the novel progresses smoothly, arriving at an unexpected, and surprising, climax of action. Readers who enjoyed "Grange House" by Sarah Blake, or the novels by Joanna Challis, will find Doudera's "A House to Die For" to be an intoxicating, delightful and impossible to put down read.
Vicki Doudera is the author of several non-fiction books, as well as worked as a successful real estate agent. She uses both of these previous skills in creating the fabulous character of Darby Farr. I look forward to her next novel with great anticipation!A House to Die For (A Darby Farr Mystery) Overview
Red-hot real estate agent Darby Farr has spent years trying to forget her hometown of Hurricane Harbor, Maine—especially the painful memories of being raised by her controlling aunt following her parents' tragic deaths. Then one morning, she learns her aunt is dying, and the calculating woman has one final demand: clinch the multimillion-dollar sale of Fairview, a breathtaking waterfront estate.

The deal seems simple, but trouble is brewing on the rocky coast. Within hours of Darby's arrival, an obscure deed restriction scuttles the sale just as the backup buyer is found bludgeoned to death on the property's grounds. Assisted by handsome journalist Miles Porter, Darby uncovers dark secrets that reveal an ugly scandal . . . and even uglier motives for murder. As a brutal storm surges up the coast, Darby must salvage the deal, find the killer—and somehow stay alive.

"[Doudera] expertly weaves a tale of suspense on a Maine island, where murder and real estate are an explosive combination."-Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author of The Mephisto Club

"Here's a fast-paced and well-told story with a smart, savvy real estate agent as the heroine, solving crimes while making sales. Bring on the next one!"-Barbara Corcoran, real estate contributor for NBC's Today Show and author of Nextville: Amazing Places to Live the Rest of Your Life

The Chocolate Bridal Bash (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 6) ReviewLee McKinney and Joe Woodyard have finally set a date for their wedding. The only problem is getting Lee's mother, Sally, to come. While trying to understand why her mother doesn't want to come, Lee unearths a family secret. Her mother originally left Warner Pier on what would have been her wedding day.
This is a chapter in her mother's life that Lee knew nothing about. Further investigating turns up that Sally's finacee was found dead in his car on their wedding day. His death was ruled a suicide.
Despite warnings that what happened is in the past, Lee's curiosity gets the better of her. She begins to spend time digging in the old newspapers, trying to make sense of events that took place before she was even born. Then Lee and Joe stumble over a very recent dead body. Whatever was having thirty plus years ago, someone still wants it to stay buried. But just what happened on that fateful night? Will Sally be in danger if she comes to the wedding?
This book is easily my favorite in the series. The action starts quickly and the pace never lags. While I can usually figure out the ending early, this one had me going until the very end. While I did put the pieces together a little before Lee, it was only by a few pages.
With the focus on the past, many of the characters from previous books are reduced to cameos. Giving the recurring characters more page time would have just slowed down the story, something I am glad didn't happen. The cast of new characters is engaging, and they more then made up for the reduced roll the regulars had.
About the only problem with the book is Lee's tongue tangles. While they had been diminishing in the last few installments, here they are back in force. While a few sprinkled throughout the book make me chuckle, here they began to get annoying.
I couldn't put this book down but raced through it to see how the story ended. Any fan of the series will love the latest tasty treat. The Chocolate Bridal Bash (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 6) OverviewBride-to-be Lee McKinney has butted heads with her future mother-in-law over her upcoming wedding. The last thing she needs is trouble with her own mom, who doesn't even want to be at the wedding if it takes place in Warner Pier, her hometown...So Lee asks her Aunt Nettie at the chocolate shop for advice. There, the bride learns that years earlier, her mother fled on what would have been her own wedding day-hours before her fiancé was found dead. Now, to smooth things over, Lee must untangle a mystery older than she is.

Smasher (The Silicon Valley Mysteries) ReviewIt has been far too long since Keith Raffel has graced us with his presence on the bookshelves. But his latest effort makes the wait worthwhile. Raffel, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, knows the topography well and demonstrates it in this fast-paced, one-sit read. SMASHER, the follow-up to DOT DEAD, marks the return of Ian Michaels, the brilliant if reluctant CEO of Accelenet, a cutting-edge IT company.
Raffel's primary talent is his ability to make that which is complex interesting to the ordinary mind. In SMASHER, he sets two plot lines along razor-sharp paths. One involves a potential takeover of Accelenet by Ricky Frankson, the fabulously successful CEO of the powerful Torii Networks. Frankson wants total control of Accelenet and is lowballing Michaels on the price while inexorably bringing market forces to bear to force the sale. Michaels has no particular love for the company he heads, having been more or less forced into the helm position by the disappearance of his predecessor and former friend. But he nonetheless feels an obligation to Accelenet's employees and stockholders to get desperately needed capital for the company while maintaining control. The result --- a war fought without white weaponry --- is an exciting one due to Raffel's ability to describe what is occurring in the boardroom and on the cell phones in terms that do not require a master's degree in business administration.
At the same time, Michaels is given an intriguing assignment by his mother. Her sister and Michael's aunt was Isobel Marter, the first woman in Stanford University's physics department and, as it turns out, a largely unheralded member of the research team responsible for the discovery of quarks. When Stanford names a particle physics lab after Marter, it sparks a conversation between Michaels and his mother, which, in turn, leads Michaels into an investigation of his own.
His digging is initially stonewalled by Dr. William Z. Tompkins, an eccentric physicist who was part of the original research team that won the Nobel Prize for the discovery. Tompkins did not get along with Marter and has a vested interest in seeing that the historical record is not disturbed. Michaels, notwithstanding the pressure of Frankson's continuing efforts to buy Accelenet, discovers that Marter's contribution to the research was far greater than the historical record would otherwise indicate. Those (including this reviewer) whose knowledge of physics is limited to a rudimentary understanding of gravity are treated during the course of the narration to a basic, understandable and enjoyable explanation of the makeup of atoms as Michaels slowly comes to the realization that an historical wrong, among others, has been committed.
When an unexpected tragedy strikes, Michaels finds his attention further diverted not only from his mother's request but also from his defense of Accelenet. Someone appears to be after him and his beloved wife, Rowena. Is the tragedy the result of happenstance? Perhaps the threat is related to Rowena's work as a deputy District Attorney. Could it be one of Frankson's minions trying to persuade him into relinquishing his company? Or is Michaels being warned off his investigation? Michaels must discover the who and the why behind the tragic incident as Rowena's life --- and, perhaps, his own --- hangs in the balance.
Keith Raffel is a master storyteller, bringing strong, parallel plot lines and sharp characterization in equal measure to the printed page while fulfilling and surpassing the promise of his debut work. Let us hope that we do not have to wait quite so long for his next offering.

Vacations Can Be Murder: The Second Charlie Parker Mystery ReviewAfter a taxing investigation (no pun intended) CPA and part-time investigator Charlie Parker decides to take a vacation to Kauai. She takes a scenic helicopter ride with Drake Langston, but gets more than she bargains for when they come across a dead body in a remote place. Drake's fellow pilot, Mack, is in the wrong place at the wrong time and he is accused of the murder. Drake asks Charlie to help with the investigation, since local law enforcement officers seem reluctant to look for any further suspects. Charlie obliges and, as a result, her relationship with Drake begins to blossom. She pursues the investigation with fervor (how many people would be willing to interrupt their Hawaiian vacation for a side-trip to California?) and eventually finds herself confronted by the killer. Except for a few awkward moments, this is a well-written mystery which has enough red herrings to make it interesting and it keeps the reader guessing until the very end.Vacations Can Be Murder: The Second Charlie Parker Mystery Overview
