Insured for Murder ReviewI was 18 years old living in the French Market in Columbus Ohio going to Bradford Business School. John Hawkins lived in my apartment building one floor down. He was incredibly goodlooking. I lived with 3 other girls at the time and we made friends with him and his friends. As a matter of fact, one of my classmates worked at his Just Sweats store at the French Market. He would routinely come into the store and take the cash out of the register then leave. This would make the manager so mad because they wouldn't be able to reconcile the books. I remember that he drove a black porsche. I was in his apartment a few times to borrow a wine opener. I remember him having a very expensive stereo system and big screen t.v. Back in 87', it was a big deal to have such a system. I came very close to sleeping with this man. To his credit, he thought I was too young. I look back now and think what a naive little girl I was. It wasn't long after I graduated from Bradford, that he was wanted for murder. I remember watching the news and seeing his face and the accompaying news story. My jaw dropped to the floor. This man was addicted to the fast life. He used his looks and charm to get what he wanted. I haven't read this book but I plan on buying it.Insured for Murder Overview

In the Name of Love: Ann Rule's Crime Files Volume 4 ReviewThis is another of my favorite true crime books. Once again, Ann does an outstanding job of introducing the reader to all of the characters. I felt like I knew each person by the time everything tied together in a horrible tragedy. Ann did a wonderful job of detailing the "friendships," the murder, the investigation, and luck involved in finally learning what had happened to the victim and who was responsible. True, the book does paint the victim as somewhat of a saint, despite the evidence that he may have been "creative" in some of his business practices. However, this book to me was more about true love -- finally found, and then lost way too soon, and how this horrible experience affected the widow for the rest of her life. It was quite a tear jerker, unlike most true crime books. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read true crime as well as to those who like romance. The Anatomy of Motive : The FBI's Legendary Mindhunter Explores the Key to Understanding and Catching Violent Criminals ReviewDouglas has trod this ground before, but never so well as this book. It's my favorite of his writings. Some critics claim that Douglas is unbearably arrogant about his work, but with his track record, who can blame him? Criminal profiling has got to be one of the most fascinating subjects; a science combining intuition, detective work, and common sense.
Douglas gives overviews of different types of killers: serial, mass, spree, and tells how they differ from each other. Those profiled include Andrew Cunanan and the Tylenol poisoner. Douglas also profiles two of the most intriguing killers, in my opinion, John List and Charles Whitman. Two more different people could not exist, and yet they both resorted (chose, in Douglas' opinion) to murder. Douglas main refrain is that these people, through a combination of physiological and psychological factors, environmental conditions, and situation stressors, choose to take the course they do. That is, lots of people may have a brutal upbringing and negative life situations, but do not kill people. So, it is a choice, and not a compulsion they cannot avoid (as Douglas puts it, none of these killers would murder while a uniformed policeman stood nearby).
At the end of the book, Douglas gives us four scenarios and gives us an opportunity to figure out whodunit. If you've been reading carefully, he says, you should be able to tell. I got three out of the four, so I guess I'm headed for the FBI academy!

Green River, Running Red: The Real Story of the Green River Killer--America's Deadliest Serial Murderer ReviewAnn Rule waited 20 years to write this book, until the GRK was caught, and it was well worth the wait. The first half of the book is devoted to the victims: desperate women, many of them drug addicts and/or emotionally fragile, most of them uneducated and living on the fringes of society. She draws sensitive, compelling portraits of these young women, too many of them still in their teens, living a hard existance. They had families, children in some cases, and friends who loved and cared for them. They weren't just faceless nobodies, walking the streets, not caring about themselves and their families. Many of them wanted to escape the life they were living, but could see no way out. These poor, victimized women are worthy of the reader's attention not just as some kind of object lesson, but as human beings engaged in a very real tragic struggle.
The victims also offer some insight into the nature of their killer: a marginalized, banal little man who got his kicks murdering defenseless women desperate enough to get into a vehicle with a total stranger on the mere promise of 30 or 40 dollars. Ann Rule introduces us to him slowly at first with brief snapshot-like depictions of his childhood and early adult years. Then in the second half of the book, readers come face to face with this meaningless individual whose primary interest in life (aside from murder) was collecting and hoarding other people's junk. He is, it turns out, no fiendish genius, no Hannibal Lecter, just an inconsequential man who hates women and can only feel important when he is taking someone's life. I cannot even imagine how the law enforcement officers charged with interrogating him could stand to be in the same room with him.
The contrasts between the two halves of this book are illuminating and remarkable. It is well worth reading as a study of a killer and his victims. It is also quite well written and readers will have no trouble becoming absorbed in Ann Rule's fluid and evocative prose. Readers looking for a sensationalized account of lurid murders and street life will be disappointed, I'm afraid. Readers looking for a more in-depth examination of this series of murders, the victims involved, and how the tenor of the times enabled the killer to carry out his crimes for so long without being caught, will find this book well worth the time and money.Green River, Running Red: The Real Story of the Green River Killer--America's Deadliest Serial Murderer Overview

Catch Me If You Can: The True Story of a Real Fake ReviewI really enjoyed the movie, but I did not believe any of it. How could a 16 year old pull off all these scams posing successfully as an airline pilot, lawyer, doctor, and FBI agent. Only in Hollywood! I had to read the book to uncover the truth. To my amazement, almost nothing in the movie was dramatized. Frank Abagnale did it all. And, this even includes the acrobatic escape from a commercial plane as it lands.
The book depicts a far richer story than the movie. At the start, the family situation is more complex. The scams are more intricate. The career path is more extraordinary. The movie skipped over interesting jobs, including a stint as a college sociology teacher.
Also amazing is that this teenager acquired far more knowledge about the meaning of every single digit on a personal check than any banker I know. And, I know, having been engaged in banking and finance for over two decades.
Frank's character development make the whole story more likely. Frank was not your regular 16 year old dude. At 16, he could easily pass for a fit 25 year old. He was 6 feet tall, 170 pounds. He also acquired quite a real world education by hanging out with his Dad. His Dad exposed him to political, business, and social circles that teenagers do not know. Thus, Frank Abagnale, being a keen observer, learned quickly how adults behave among themselves.
Frank was also strikingly handsome, and confident. So, the story includes many romantic interludes. This aspect of life is described most tastefully. There is nothing graphic here. And, it does not detract from the story. To the contrary, women were a key element in this scammer's education. They were often insiders to the professions he attempted to fake.
There are a lot of close calls, where you feel Abagnale's cover is going to peel off for good. But, invariably he recovers elegantly from what appears like desperate situations.
In the last part of the book things finally go south. But, it is still fascinating. You learn about the awful prison standards and jail terms in France and Italy. You also find out how Sweden treats their own incarcerated people so much better.
In the Afterword & Q & A section, you are relieved that everything turned out well for this likable Robin hood like figure. He now leads a very successful life as a corporate consultant on fraud, happily married with kids. Hard to believe but true.Catch Me If You Can: The True Story of a Real Fake Overview
