A Glint In Time ReviewThis review has a dual focus -- the book itself as well as formatting issues on the kindle2.
The science is interesting but relationships of the story feel forced. Our heroine: a young, attractive, intelligent young business owner, from a large city, has an attraction for an older man within hours of meeting him on a business trip a remote location in Alabama. They hold hands and walk on the beach. But then, she develops a love interest on the other male just a short while later on the same trip. She comes, she sees, she loves.
Other than some forced relationships and dialogue, the Kindle version is unacceptable. Wherever quotations were used, dingbats appeared. Then, during a key part of the book a time warp occurs...not in the story, but on the Kindle. A sentence begins with the characters in a conference room discussing technology and shifts mid-sentence to another scene entirely - an attempted kidnapping at another location. It appears that a page or two were omitted when the book was scanned. One conversation did not end and we do not know how they came to peril. In another spot, you read the same 4-5 paragraphs twice.
Overall, my experience with "Glint" was a little disappointing. The author would have benefited from a more attentive editor.A Glint In Time OverviewI'm thrilled with the way my new novel, "A Glint in Time" came out. Here is the premise: It is true that today, in university labs around the world, graduate students in physics are experimenting with freezing light and time. (Google the phrase Bose-Einstein).My one assumption beyond present science fact in this book is that a new technique gives experimenters the ability to send a small item to be sent back into time. All commonlaws of physics still apply... the farther back in time the less accurate.. great power is needed.. significant heating is takes place.So, if you could send a tiny white hot object back into time, what COULD you do with it? What WOULD you do with it. And, if you were successful in changing something, how would you know?(The paradox is that if you successfully changed an event, then it never happened, so you didn't need to change it.. so you didn't.)The action takes place in a US Air Force setting, in Florida, in the Pentagon,and around the world. There are good strong male and female characters who are easy to like. And, as you would expect, there are some bad guys who are easy to hate.The story is full of historical and place detail.It touches on the causes of the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, 911, and other major events in history.The action is swift, and you'll find the plot line very interesting.If you like military thrillers, if you like historical fiction, if you like alternative history, you will like this book.It also makes a great gift for anyone who might fall into those categories.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

The Terror Timeline: Year by Year, Day by Day, Minute by Minute: A Comprehensive Chronicle of the Road to 9/11--and America's Response ReviewThis book is a number of things. First, it is an exhaustive work of scholarly research with enough footnotes to satisfy and then some. To get a feel for what I am talking about one may view his work in an online version at www.cooperativeresearch.org. The shear academic quality is enough reason to buy the book.
Second, the website mentioned is a relatively new phenomena in that it is an "open source" research site. Mr. Thompson's work has been posted for comment and criticism for several months now and has been honed to a fine edge.
And third, this book is the scariest piece of work you will ever read. I'm not kidding you. This is scarey stuff. We've been treated like a bunch of sheep being led to the slaughter. There was an old sci-fi film where the aliens came down and presented humanity with a book "The Serving of Humans" or something similar. As the protagonists are boarding the ship to go visit the alien homeworld, a translator bursts in and yells out "It's a cookbook!"
That's the feeling you come away with here. You wont put it down but don't expect to enjoy it. But for goodness sake, read it.The Terror Timeline: Year by Year, Day by Day, Minute by Minute: A Comprehensive Chronicle of the Road to 9/11--and America's Response Overview

Let's Roll: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage ReviewI presume to suggest that this book be read in combination with Jere Longman's Among the Heroes. Frankly, I am unable to appreciate the full nature and extent of Lisa Beamer's grief, following the death of her husband and others aboard United flight 93. As she explains in this book, her primary challenge since then has been to overcome that grief while somehow providing for the needs of their three children. (Daughter Morgan was born in January, only a few months after United flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.) Although she has written a bestseller, and continues to attract media attention, Lisa Beamer remains focused on her children and the work of the Todd M. Beamer Foundation whose mission is to assist other children who have also lost a parent. The title of her book refers to her late husband's last recorded remarks just before he and others aboard the plane attempted to overcome the terrorists who had skyjacked it. ("Are you guys ready? Let's roll!") They knew what had already happened on September 11th whereas those aboard the other three flights did not. Huddled to the rear of their plane, several were able to call loved ones and then recited the Lord's Prayer before rushing the forward area.
Those who read this book expecting a detailed account of those final moments will be disappointed. (That is why I highly recommend Longman's book.) What Lisa Beamer shares in this book is her abiding religious faith, probably without which she could not cope with the loss of her beloved husband. She is also determined to help others to understand who her late husband was and why his heroism is "so Todd." She suggests that he was "more than a half hour of time on September 11." Of course, the same can be said of everyone else aboard that flight as well as of those aboard the other three flights and of everyone else who perished at the World Trade Center and at the Pentagon.
It has been less than a year since the multiple of tragedies occurred and it may be several decades before we will be able to fully grasp the nature and extent of heroism both in the air and on the ground throughout that tragic day...and during the weeks which followed. Lisa Beamer has written an inspirational account of her own experiences. Although apparently there have been indications at least some resentment of her celebrity, with which she seems to be uncomfortable, she observes that "I haven't gotten that sense on my interactions with the other families. I do my best to say what happened on that plane was teamwork, that there are a lot of untold stories and other heroes" aboard United flight 93. Perhaps in time, we will learn more about them. Perhaps those "untold stories" will be added to Todd Beamer's.
My final comment is that, now more than ever before, we need to re-define heroism so as to include otherwise "ordinary" people who, when faced with a life-threatening crisis, respond with extraordinary courage. May our beloved nation always have Todd Beamers to accept that challenge...and Lisa Beamers to help us to appreciate them.Let's Roll: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Courage Overview2003 ECPA Gold Medallion Award winner!
