Verdict In Search of a Crime: Legend Is What Is Told When A Story's Truth Is Too Dangerous ReviewThis is a top-notch story with loads of intense conflict, a range of colorful characters and plenty of plot twists leading up to a first-rate climax. "Verdict!" is an especially interesting read in the wake of the current presidential campaign, but it's involving and satisfying no matter what your politics are. If you enjoy military dramas on a sprawling canvas and stories that keep your adrenaline pumping (even if some of the details might seem far-fetched at times), John Eastman has written a compelling novel right up your alley.Verdict In Search of a Crime: Legend Is What Is Told When A Story's Truth Is Too Dangerous OverviewAN EPIC TALE OF A MODERN DAY DAVID AGAINST A SEEMINGLY INVINCIBLE GOLIATH In a prior life, Christian Brice lived in the world of military espionage Black Ops. A trained shooter, a killer, an assassin, he lived a life that was solitary, trusting only a few select individuals. When Christian was on his missions, he trusted even fewer. His targets were never personal and there was no hatred in him, just a sense of duty. Christian repeatedly carried out his duties to the letter, until he was assigned to take out an NVA Colonel and rescue a captured American, CIA Section Leader - Spook - John Cockney. John Cockney is the only man Christian has ever hated. Cockney is a traitor and murderer, selling weapons, secrets and illegal drugs to the enemy, for personal gain. With his Vietnam duty behind him, and now in private life, Christian has sworn himself to a new mission, a righteous mission, to expose Senator John Cockney, who is now running for President. Christian is framed, sentenced to prison, losing his family and former life in the process. Using a new identity, Christian Brice starts his new life as Raymond Miller, a journalist living in a secluded community in Colorado. When Senator Cockney is kidnapped in Vietnam by terrorists, only days before the national elections, there's only one man that can carry out a rescue, but he's officially dead. Having kept his aging body in condition, Raymond is commissioned to go back into the jungle to once again rescue his archenemy. This struggle is tantamount to the culmination of his life struggle to right a wrong, and perhaps prevent America from starting World War Three.

Parallel to the book, the decisions that I embraced in my past have become my future. The story is very inspiring and kept me reading continuously. Everything Family Guide to New England: Where to eat, play, and stay in America's scenic and historic Northeast (Everything Series) ReviewI'm planning a 2008 trip to New England for my family which includes my wife, and my 9-, 13-, and 17-year-old children. The book is written as a state-by-state guide showcasing must-see activities for each state, then laying out recommended attractions, places to eat and stay, and other miscellaneous items by region within the state. I would guess over 95% of the items in the book include web addresses where one can do more research. This book was my primary tool for creating our itinerary while Frommer's encyclopedia-like approach and Insight Guides' many pictures provided additional reference information. The only slight knock I have is that not all items found in the book are listed in the index, so sometimes you have to recall where it's at and hunt it down via page-flipping. However, the book isn't overly large and the type is easy to read, so this isn't difficult. If you're planning a trip for your family, I can't recommend it enough. It was just updated for 2008.Everything Family Guide to New England: Where to eat, play, and stay in America's scenic and historic Northeast (Everything Series) Overview

Santa Fe in a Week More or Less: Making the Most of Your Days: Lodging, Restaurants, Historical Sites, Museums, Shopping, Art Galleries, Spas, Pueblos ReviewWhen I first received this book I was dismayed because it included alot of web links. However, after I started reading it I realized it was really a very good condensed book chock full of information and one doesn't have to go to the links in order to enjoy this book. We're going to Santa Fe for one week and this book has been a great help in narrowing down exactly where we want to go and what we want to do. I highly recommend it.Santa Fe in a Week More or Less: Making the Most of Your Days: Lodging, Restaurants, Historical Sites, Museums, Shopping, Art Galleries, Spas, Pueblos OverviewThis is the ultimate guide to getting the most out of your visit to the City Different. Michelin New York City (Michelin Green Guide New York City) ReviewI purchased the Michelin Green Guuide New York City after borrowing it from the library several times. It was a worthwhile purchase, if only for the subway map. It gives a tourist all the information he/she needs to plan a trip to NYC, how to chose places to see, subway information and restaurant suggestions in the area of the attraction. The other plus about this guide is the shape, which fits into the pocket of cargo shorts or into a tote bag.Michelin New York City (Michelin Green Guide New York City) OverviewThe long-standing Michelin Travel Guides are an ideal travel companion for travelers who really want to connect with the world. Get to know the local way of life through detailed background information on the country, people, and culture. Quickly identify the best places to visit using Michelin's star rating system. With the Michelin Travel Guide to New York City, explore the Statue of Liberty, ride the subway to jazz at Lincoln Center, step outside the USA to mingle with the 192 member states of the United Nations, hobnob with polar bears at the Bronx Zoo or enjoy medieval sculpture at The Cloisters.

Mountain Justice ReviewThe characters are lifelike, the pace is fast, the plots and sub plots are intreguging.and the tale,as a whole,is totally believeable. This is an entertainig book and a fast read. My wife and daughter have also read it and couldn't put it down. A fine book by an exciting new author. Another book, please.
Glenn G. ButlerMountain Justice Overview
It was so dark that she couldn't see anything but headlights. There was no guardrail along the steep drop to the riverbank, but Megan pulled over as close to the edge as possible to allow the car to pass. It didn't pull out to pass but continued to ease up closer to the rear of her car. Then, Megan and Roberta were thrown forward as it bumped the rear of her car.

Roberta screamed, and Megan yelled, "Mama, tighten your seat belt!" She was trying to pull her own belt tighter when they were bumped again. She tried to speed up, but the other vehicle stayed right on her bumper. Then she tried to slow down, and it finally pulled out to pass. But when it pulled even with the left rear of Megan's car, it swerved into her car. Megan had no room to move over since she was already right on the edge of the steep embankment. She tried to speed up again, but the right front fender of the other vehicle hit her left rear side again and caused her to lose control. Megan's car fishtailed back and forth across the narrow road and then went over the steep embankment ...

Machiavelli's Desert ReviewA Chernobyl-type nuclear disaster, murders disguised as suicides, corruption, nanotechnology, political conspiracy, and more abound in Canadian author Lawrence Uhlin's debut novel, Machiavelli's Desert. Canada's sovereignty is challenged to the brink in a thriller that takes the reader from Ottawa to Washington D.C. and from the Grand Caymans to Kamloops, British Columbia.
The horrific meltdown-explosion of a nuclear power reactor opens up the story in a small pacific Island called Arnivan. I was immediately hooked by the author's attention to detail in describing the disaster. The island's population is devastated and the environment polluted. The facility is a CANDU reactor designed, built, and installed by Canada.
Scientist Dr. Claire Frenette is found dead shortly after revealing to a rookie politician how she believes the reactor meltdown is the result of government financial cutbacks to scientific programs. Will Headley is a government staffer with a gambling problem. A mysterious Russian-sounding man known as Renakes has a solution to Headley's dept predicament. Daley Whitman is a blue collar criminal sprung from jail for a promise of a favour to Canada Corrections. An ailing veteran senator is Whitman's chosen confidant in his dilemma. CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) Intelligence Officer, Mari Volser, at the senator's request, investigates Whitman and later Dr. Frenette. Meanwhile the World Court is poised to charge Canada for crimes against humanity for the Arnivan catastrophe. Reparations to the island nation will certainly bankrupt Canada. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nicholas Plato is charged with keeping Canada afloat in its most desperate hour. Plato has been offered a chance to purchase advanced computer technology that could be the key to Canada's financial stability, or plunge the government into a scandal the likes of which the country has never before experienced. In the meantime, the Americans are poised to pick up the pieces and push forward their desires for Canada's vast natural resources.
I found Machiavelli's Desert to be one of the most dialogue heavy books I have ever read. Although the dialogue is authentic, many of the conversations continue for several pages and some for full chapters. I found myself craving a car chase, love scene, or fist fight to break up the constant conversation. Uhlin has created several fascinating point-of-view characters and he uses each effectively to tell his story; but none is a clear cut protagonist in whom we can become truly invested.
Uhlin shows his considerable knowledge of Canadian politics and culture. He questions international policies, morals, and values and he examines how doing the obvious wrong thing can benefit the greater good. The characters are interesting and well drawn with vivid descriptions. Uhlin has infused enough suspense while pacing the story in a way that keeps us guessing, without giving away too much, as he sets up a whopper of a twist at the end. Machiavelli's Desert is an entertaining, quick read with a wonderful opening and a satisfying conclusion and is recommended to readers who enjoy political espionage thrillers.
Machiavelli's Desert Overview
Canada's natural resources - water, oil, mining and forestry are in jeopardy of almost certain takeover by foreign interests, and the very sovereignty of the nation is in imminent danger of collapse. Machiavelli's Desert takes the reader on a colorful voyage of mystery, intrigue and greed across Canada to Washington, Houston, Grand Cayman Island, the British Virgin Islands and to the island of Arnivan whose future is threatened because of a Canadian CANDU Reactor meltdown.

In the British Columbia Interior we meet a man owing a debt to the federal prison system that is to be redeemed by, of all things, a vasectomy. In Ottawa Canadian Security Intelligence Service Officer Mari Volser searches for a motive to explain a Canadian scientist's mysterious death on the eve of revealing to a recently elected and naively idealistic Member of Parliament important instances of the government's neglect and complicity. In Houston a detective police sergeant investigates the disappearance of a brilliant, quirky microbiologist. A forty foot sloop named the Mariposa is spotted by a contract psychologist in Grand Cayman Island's Pig Sty Harbour and days later is seen again by the man at a marina in the Sunshine Coast - thousands of kilometers distant.

The Prime Minister of Canada is offered a technological discovery that could be the country's salvation or its embarrassment. His decision making takes him to Tortola where the reader listens in to a conversation of a ramshackle Caribbean beach bar owner and the country's leader as they swap stories of moral metaphor and rhythm and blues history while Canada's sovereignty is increasingly challenged and its citizens face the loss of their national identity.

Through the clamor and chaos of Canada's turmoil a political hero emerges and another dies. Machiavelli's Desert is a book of espionage, intrigue and controversy that tests the strength of values existing in international and national politics. When does a profound wrong become a moral right? The characters in Machiavelli's Desert play out life-threatening, life-taking danger among thieves, politicians and the court of the world that in the end suggests the test of strength is pushed to a point of apathetic resignation or a new world order.

Machiavelli's Desert is a book that looks closely at a political systems designed primarily to achieve power for power's sake at the expense of moral integrity and the well-being of the common people–society. It is a book wrapped in the settings, characters, scenarios and adventure that allow for an entertaining read as well as a consideration of values beyond the individual ego.

Machiavelli's Desert builds suspense carefully and strategically leading the reader to a surprising and unexpected conclusion.

Husband-ry 101: How to Train Your Husband to Be the Spouse You've Always Wanted Him to Be (Volume 2) ReviewMy wife saw me reading Husband-ry 101 and wanted to know what I was learning (in a joking way). I told her that I was learning a lot about "keeping the spark alive" in marriage from a regular man (not a psychologist or couch counselor). The premise of Mike's book is that much of the success (or failure) in a marriage is due to communication between the spouses.
This book is great for Christian couples and perfect for church newlywed classes. Good thing too, I understand you can customize Mike's book (possible with this publisher) to make his book more personalized with your church name and scriptures inside...a big hit in marriage classes.

Bait ReviewAnother winner from Karen Robards. If you are like me you can't wait for one of her books to come out. This one is GREAT.
Maddie Fitzgerald has had a hard life, but now things are looking up. She is in New Orleans to make a presentation that could take her fledgling advertizing agency into the big time. That night in her hotel room someone tries to kill her. Not only that, but he does kill another Madaline Fitzgerald in the same hotel. Which one did he mean to kill?
Sam McCade has been on this killer's trail for a month, the killer likes to tease him with hints before the kill. When Sam learns another Madaline has been attacked, but managed to escape he thinks he has his first break.
Maddie doesn't know if the hit was to be on her or not. But the FBI has already left her out to dry once, and she sure doesn't need them on her case again. IT has taken her 7 years to rebuild her life.
If it is the mob, she thinks she can hold some evidence over them and make them call off the hit. All the time she has Sam and his crew on her tail. Which is lucky because they save her life again and move in to protect her. She is not willing to tell them anything about her knowledge of the mob. She must protect herself.
When the killer strikes again she knows she will never be safe. She begins to think someone else is after her. But who? The attraction between her and Sam is potent. Eventually they confess to falling in love.
But the killer is not just after Maddie, somehow he seems to be connected to Sam, too.
The excitement never lets up. This is a fast paced story and so good you don't want it to end. There is a touch of humor, and you will feel alot of compassion for Maddie. The secondary characters are great, the ending surprising and exciting. Don't start to read it late at night, you may not get any sleep.Bait Overview

Winner's Way ReviewFollowing in a long tradition of spiritual revolutionaries comes Sensei, a living contradiction--soldier for peace, organizer of chaos, friendly stranger, powerful nobody. He can't be measured with any of mankind's limited tools because he is truly free, and the story of Winner's Way is a story of a mentor who helps a young man find a path to freedom in a world overgrown with obstacles. Like a Zen koan, Sensei casts into young Mark's darkness a ray of hope in the form of nonsensical truth, of serious play. Sensei is a spiritual survivor--creative in his love, gentle in his instruction, understanding of suffering, patient with the follies of youth, impatient with violence, and compassionate even in the face of evil. Winner's Way is a meditation on mentorship, youth, romance, family, duty, sickness both bodily and spiritual, and ultimately on the redemptive power of love--the only sane response in a world full of illusion.Winner's Way OverviewIn this inspiring coming-of-age novel, Mark, a young man who thinks his life is full of walls, obligations and dead-ends, comes to realize that there is something more. Mark is a freshman in college, studying business--a field that doesn't interest him at all. Family obligations have turned him from his real interests. Boring classes and medical problems make him feel vulnerable and unable to make long-term decisions. With the words, "You are not who you think you are," a chance meeting with a mysterious man named Sensei shakes up Mark's world-view and changes his life-course in ways he never imagined.Winner's Way received a Hewlett Foundation Grant for incorporating life enrichment skills in a novel. Although this engaging novel can be read for pleasure, the extensive author's notes at the end contain information, humor and self-help resources.

Identity Crisis: How Identification is Overused and Misunderstood ReviewIdentity Crisis is a superb primer on identification, identification theory, and identity policy. Citizens and policy-makers faced with threats from international terrorists and a dramatic rise in identity fraud need a good grounding in the uses and abuses of identification in providing security and facilitating daily transactions. This book serves precisely that purpose.
Author Jim Harper makes an important distinction between identification and authentication. Differences between the two are nothing to be trifled with. The interests of personal security and privacy hinge upon whether or to what extent either identification or authentication are used by government, private entities, and everyday citizens. Harper persuasively argues that identification is all-too-often overused, and that a process of authentication can often serve our needs most effectively.
Most people have probably never given a thought to identification theory. That certainly holds for this reviewer--until I read this book. Identification is largely a common-sense matter, but Harper brings attention to the conceptual depth attendant to this subject.
Also interesting are Harper's chapters more narrowly focused on privacy and anonymity. Important legal and constitutional matters are briefly discussed, underscoring the need for appropriate identification policies and practices. Of course, this book is accessible to a general audience and is certainly not limited in its audience to lawyers or to any other specialty.
After reading the book, one gets the sense that there is a lot more to say about identification. But a lot of ground is traversed in this work, and the result is highly commendable. Identity Crisis is an important and recommended read.Identity Crisis: How Identification is Overused and Misunderstood OverviewThe advance of identification technology biometrics, identity cards, surveillance, databases, dossiers threatens privacy, civil liberties, and related human interests. Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, demands for identification in the name of security have increased. In this insightful book, Jim Harper takes readers inside identification a process everyone uses every day but few people have ever thought about. Using stories and examples from movies, television, and classic literature, Harper dissects identification processes and technologies, showing how identification works when it works and how it fails when it fails. Harper exposes the myth that identification can protect against future terrorist attacks. He shows that a U.S. national identification card, created by Congress in the REAL ID Act, is a poor way to secure the country or its citizens. A national ID represents a transfer of power from individuals to institutions, and that transfer threatens liberty, enables identity fraud, and subjects people to unwanted surveillance. Instead of a uniform, government-controlled identification system, Harper calls for a competitive, responsive identification and credentialing industry that meets the mix of consumer demands for privacy, security, anonymity, and accountability. Identification should be a risk-reducing strategy in a social system, Harper concludes, not a rivet to pin humans to governmental or economic machinery.

Runner, A Jane Whitefield Novel ReviewI've read just about everything by Thomas Perry, and the Jane Whitefield books are my favorites. The brilliant Native American woman who takes people "out of the world" is back with an exciting new case. It's been a few years, and Jane must adjust to new realities (post-9/11 security systems, new Internet tracking capabilities, etc.) to help an abused, pregnant woman disappear from the ruthless people who are looking for her.
Perry knows Jane Whitefield inside and out, and everything she does in these adventures just rings true. Every new book is like a visit with an old friend, which is how I think of her. She uses her common sense while avoiding the thousands of mistakes most of us would make (phones, email, GPS, Internet, etc.) in making other people vanish without a trace. Of course, the modern world makes vanishing increasingly difficult, and Jane has to strive to keep ahead of all the latest technology that is her profession's enemy. This makes her a bit of an old-fashioned throwback--but it also enables her to get the job done. RUNNER is a fascinating addition to this wonderful series. Recommended.

A Hole in the Heart: A Novel ReviewIn some ways, this book reminded me of "The Dive from Clausen's Pier": both books feature a female protagonist struggling to find herself after her relationship comes to a tragic end. When I read the former, however, I never connected with the main character, Carrie, who I couldn't help but to consider pathetic. The main character of this book, Bean, certainly has aspects of her life that could also be considered pathetic, but somehow, I related more easily to her behavior (eg, lying in bed eating Ben & Jerry's when her husband was away) than I could to the more amorphous actions of Carrie. Bean comes across as extremely real, from her ambivalence toward the various people in her life to her earnest search for direction and meaning. Here is a lost soul who you really root for; you want to see Bean triumph in the end. While the conclusion of the book isn't exactly uplifting--the author resists the ever-present temptation to tie everything up neatly--as you come to the end of Bean's story, you can easily imagine that she is on the path to a brighter future. A well-written, wonderful detailed, and refreshingly original work.A Hole in the Heart: A Novel Overview

JUNE RAIN ReviewThis book June Rain by Denfield Dowdye is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. The rhythm is great, there's plenty of action and the outcomes are not stereotypically predictable. GET THIS BOOK. You won't be sorry. I am looking for more great works from Denfield Dowdye in the very near future. Great story.JUNE RAIN OverviewFreeman is dreaming of success as a reggae musician when he stumbles into a Washington, D.C., alley and finds two men who'd killed each other moments earlier. As he starts to run, a green package catches his eye. He takes the package home and finds that it contains heroin worth over a million dollars. His girlfriend, Simone, convinces him to overcome his fear and sell the drugs.
Meanwhile, in Miami, Tommy, the package's rightful owner, is battling unacknowledged bipolar disorder and worrying about the whereabouts of his parcel. To make matters worse, he's just missed a court-appointed urine test, his cousin wants him to avenge her son's murder, and his lover, a well-paid stripper named Gabrielle, is facing the consequences of a long-held secret that threatens to disrupt her life.
Freeman's efforts to sell the package while Tommy tries desperately to find it trigger a series of events that involve a single-minded female FBI agent, a muscle-bound bodyguard with a conscience, a heroic but flawed detective, and a wealthy, elusive counterfeiter whose desire for Freeman's girl leads to a potentially career-ending lapse in judgment.

Around the World in Twenty-Five Years: A Memoir ReviewAn entertaining and informative look at what it was like to be a member of the military elite; those chosen to be on the staff of Air Force One. John Trimble brings to life his 25 years as a member of the USAF. He spent many years as radio operator for various presidents. As a result, he was privy to information the public can only imagine. In addition, he had to keep the lines of communication open during a very hectic, and overwhelmingly sad time in our nation's history.Around the World in Twenty-Five Years: A Memoir OverviewThis is the story of Chief Master Sergeant John Trimble's extraordinary career in the U.S. Air Force. He served aboard Air Force One, as radio operator for the domestic travels and foreign state visits of threePresidents and other government officials, and had other airborne and land-based communications positions. Trimble's stories span three wars and and encounters with various dignitaries and ordinary people he encountered in his twenty-five years crisscrossing the globe in service to his country. As the President's airborne communications specialist, he was the direct link between the President and the outside world. In this role, CMSgt. Trimble was privy to more top secretinformation than any other member of the crew of Air Force One.This book captures the drama of serving aboard the flying White House, such as the chapter covering the last flight of President John Kennedy and the first of President Lyndon Johnson, both on November 22, 1963.This chapter contains Trimble's dramatic verbatim radio transcript of communications between Air Force One andAdministration officials both in Washington and elsewhere, including LBJ's call to Mrs. Rose Kennedy, JFK's mother, in which Mrs Kennedy was the first person to address LBJ as Mr. President, shortly after his swearing in aboard the aircraft.Trimble also flew with Presidents Johnson and Nixon, as well as scores of congressmen and world leaders. He has documented here-to-fore unrecorded incidents, such as his meeting with Emperor Haile Selassi of Ethiopia and the 'gold coin", French President Georges Pompidou of France's embarrassment over the private showing of a movie, and both China trips of National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger, which eventually resulted in the reestablishment of ties with China and during which John personally met with Premier Zhou Enlai.Zhou was largely responsible for the re-establishment of contacts with the West in the early 1970s.The book also covers Trimble's experience beyond Air Force One, from a harrowing experience aboard a twin engine plane lost in a violent storm over the vast Pacific, evacuating wounded troops from Korea, and grounding in Vietnam. It is an exciting tale, chock full of anecdotes, weaving humor, history, geography and first-hand observations, taking the reader around the world several times, in a career that entailed over 9,000 hours of flying."John Trimble is one of the few who transformed his rendezvous with history intowords to be read and appreciated far into the future. It is the best account Ihave seen of the world of SAM FOX--VIP travel performed by the Air Force."(Robert F. Dorr, Author/Columnist)

Closet Governor ReviewThis is a thoroughly enjoyable book. My greatest fear is that the average, heterosexual reader will shy away from it because of the gay theme. They would be missing out. The characters' feelings of fear, ambition, love, envy and betrayal are beautifully developed and representative of real people, regardless of sexual orientation. All lovers of mystery and intrigue will appreciate this freshman work.Closet Governor Overview
