Lonely Planet Costa Rica ReviewJust got back from Costa Rica (2 wks), and had a good time, though it wasn't without serious disappointment.
While there we noticed that almost all the guidebooks people were carrying around were Lonely Planet (LP). But everywhere we stayed that LP raved about was very disappointing, and the few places we stayed that were very understated in LP were excellent.
My theory is that so many people are using LP that if a place gets a rave recommendation the business just pours in. They jack up their prices, sit back and rest on their reputation, and the facility and service deteriorate. But the money keeps pouring in because of that great LP review. Meanwhile the underrated places have to work their butts off to get business. Even though LP CR is only 2 years old, the prices of the highly rated hotels were off by as much as 50%, whereas the ones with understated descriptions were right on.
Generally, I like using LP, but for CR I would say that too many people do. Grab a different guidebook and cross-ref it with LP. If it has a nice sounding place that's not in LP, stay there!
We also used Frommer's even though it doesn't have much of a selection of budget places. Frommer's descriptions are so much more colorful and accurate. You get the impression that they only write about places for which they have first-hand knowledge. Plus Frommer's 2004 edition is new and the prices were exactly right. But, it's not sufficient by itself because it just doesn't list enough places.
Our rule of thumb for LP CR: If LP writes more than half a column about a hotel or lodge, avoid it! It will be overrated by now, with ridiculously high prices, and an inattentive staff.
Next gripe related to the advice in this guidebook: all the concerns and warnings are grossly exagerated. The roads are bad, but they don't swallow cars and break axles. There may be some crime, but there aren't people learching in the shadows to flatten your tires every time you stop. The busy season doesn't fill every hotel -- in fact without reservations, we got our first choice of hotels every night. I wonder how much more fun my trip would have been if I hadn't let this book make me so defensive!
Here's a tip for Costa Rican hotels: it doesn't matter how expensive the place is, the showers are lousy, with very little hot water and terrible water pressure. So don't pay $45 for a place just because it has hot showers when the place next door is only $25.Lonely Planet Costa Rica OverviewThis guide offers travellers the full range of options available for travellers to Costa Rica - from secluded beaches to wildlife reserves, from camping to staying in luxury hotels.

Moon Mexico City (Moon Handbooks) ReviewI picked up the previous edition of this book on a whim before a two-week trip to Mexico City a few years ago, and liked it so much that I got myself the new edition for another recent trip. It gives you an excellent overview of the basic stuff, but never fails to come up with new and interesting ideas and angles, even if you already know the city quite well. I am very impressed with the authors' ability to convey a spot-on sense of how the city is like. This guide has never failed me. To me, it's a considerably better quality product than the usual travel guides and therefore highly recommended.Moon Mexico City (Moon Handbooks) OverviewFormer Mexico City resident Chris Humphrey provides travelers with an insider's view of the metropolis, from exploring the myriad historical sites packed into the world-famous Centro neighborhood to viewing the renowned paintings of Frida Kahloa, Diego Rivera, David Siquieros, and Jose Clemente Orozco. Humphrey also provides unique trip strategies, including Indiginous Past and Present, and for those with only a few days to spare, A Weekend in Mexico City. Complete with details on visiting the colonial village of Tlalpan, viewing the pyramids of Teotihuacan, or hiking to see Monarch butterflies in forest reserves, Moon Mexico City gives travelers the tools they need to create a more personal and memorable experience.

Michelin Green Guide Germany ReviewCustomer reviews of older editions of this guide are very complimentary -- and deservedly so! But sadly, the newer green guides are much less useful than their predecessors and this 2011 green guide is a good example of the newer editions.
I have been using Michelin green and red guides with great pleasure since 1961 for our annual vacations in Europe. I just counted the green guides we own -- 40, some of them dating back to the 1960s and 1970s if we haven't returned to an area since then. But the newest green guides are a disaster. They are full of color photos and hotel and restaurant recommendations -- but much of the detailed descriptions of the sights has disappeared. And some of the town maps and the sights themselves have also disappeared from this guide, including some sights that were rated one star in the previous edition.
Another problem -- this guide is now organized by area, instead of alphabetically by town, so I can no longer quickly turn to the location in which I'm interested but have to use the index to find its page number.
I bought the new (2011) edition of the Germany green guide because it has up-to-date information about opening times, entrance fees, etc. Fortunately, I still have my 2005 Germany green guide and will take it along on our trip to Germany to have the detailed descriptions and town maps. And I will no longer discard the older green guide when I buy a new edition!
Michelin Green Guide Germany OverviewPlan your trip with the newly updated Green Guide Germany. Practical information suggests when to go and what to see. Take a walking tour of Lubeck's old town, enjoy a biking tour of Berlin, or head for Moselle Valley's picturesque villages. Stop in a Dresden cafe or indulge in a stein at Munich's Oktoberfest. Color photos, illustrations, background information and address book help organize your journey. With the respected star-rating system, the Michelin Green Guide brings you to the heart of Germany. Use with Michelin Germany Map No. 718.

Frommer's Hawaii Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Full Size) ReviewIf I could give this book zero stars, I would.
This book gives the traveler no information on out-of-the-way, unusual, or even affordable places to visit, eat, and stay. According to this book, there are no cheap, non-chain restaurants to eat at near Waikiki Beach (false) and the only trail worth hiking in Oahu is the Diamond Head Crater (also false). We abandoned this book for Yelp and a map of Oahu, which provided much more interesting recommendations.
If you are a backpacker or a traveler interested in relatively unexplored places, get Lonely Planet instead.Frommer's Hawaii Day by Day (Frommer's Day by Day - Full Size) Overview
Hawaii Day by Day features hundreds of gorgeous color photos of the sights and experiences that await you.
Our author, a longtime resident of the Big Island, hits all the highlights, from Pearl Harbor to Haleakala to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. She's checked out all the best hotels and restaurants in person, and offers authoritative, candid reviews that will help you find the choices that suit your tastes and budget.
You'll also get up-to-the-minute coverage of shopping and nightlife; detailed walking tours; reviews of the best beaches on each island; special-interest tours that focus on history & culture, kid-friendly itineraries, romantic getaways, and more; and full coverage of all 6 touristed Hawaiian islands: Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kauai.

Explorer's Guide New Hampshire (Seventh Edition) (Explorer's Complete) ReviewThis guidebook is wonderful in showing the many personalities of New Hampshire. With over 500 pages on our Granite State, it reveals the little-known gems that abound here. I checked out a copy from our library recently to explore southwestern New Hampshire, and it was so useful I am ordering a copy. It has excellent in-depth descriptions of inns, B&Bs and restaurants, as well as full descriptions of outdoor recreation opportunities. The writing is crisp and informative, and there are numerous photos. Maps are not plentiful, but the maps that are included are helpful. Recommended for residents as well as adventurous travelers.Explorer's Guide New Hampshire (Seventh Edition) (Explorer's Complete) Overview

India (Lonely Planet Country Guide) ReviewI was going to India on my honeymoon and I bought both the Lonely Planet and Fodor's for the planing.
Came back from India about a month ago and ended taking the Fodor's for the trip, not the Lonely Planet. Why?
LP has a lot of very detailed info -mostly quantitative: prices, time tables, etc- that is very useful for planing your trip and is geared to users that travel without an itinerary. This is very good for travelers that are very price conscious, unstructured travelers, backpackers and doitallyourselfers that make decisions on the fly and hence need all of this very detailed info, missed the train to Agra, should I take a bus? Where? How much? The only bus stops at Shimla, should I stay? What is there to see/do?
On the other hand, Fodor's has info of a more quantitative nature, that is more useful when you have a more structured trip. What restaurants to visit, what hotel to stay at, etc. There is a big emphasis on the epicurean traveler, costs be dammed, you see it the way the book is organized, were LP talks about the eateries by zone, Fodor's talks about types of food, no matter were the place is, it is assumed that visiting the place is more important that going to the other side of town to do so.
Whenever I stuck to the Fodor's Choice or the Fodor's Recommends, I was gladly surprised by the quality of the service/place that was recommended, the best restaurants, best bars, best experiences, best hotels in every town, they are all there, I even surprised some locals.
At the end, you have to decide what type of travel you'll be doing and buy accordingly.

National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States, 6th Edition ReviewThis is an excellent guide to the fifty-eight national parks. It doesn't matter whether you are interested in week-long back-country hikes, overnight camping, a long hike in the woods, sight-seeing, or just driving through: this book is an in-depth guide to the parks, their history, their features, and what you need to see, bring, and know. The one-star review entitled "Not A Resource" is completely off-base. This book correctly notes that it is a guide to the national PARKS--not national historic sites or national lakeshores. My son and I visited Harper's Ferry this summer while we were biking the C&O Canal. I enjoyed Harper's Ferry, but it is a national historic site and NOT a national PARK. Isaiah and I also stopped at Abraham Lincoln's boyhood home in southern Indiana on our way from Saint Louis; I would recommend this site, too, but it is NOT a national PARK. Frankly, the author of that review should remove her post AND apologize to the National Geographic staff. This book is now in its sixth edition because it is that good. Buy it and pack it with you.National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States, 6th Edition OverviewFeaturing 375 color photos and 80 full-color detailed maps-more than any other park guidebook-this is the most comprehensive, up-to-the-minute book of its kind on the market today. A perennial favorite with more than a million copies sold in previous editions, it reflects National Geographic's century-long association with America's national parks system and its peerless reputation for travel expertise and cartographic excellence. The guide opens with an essay by Yellowstone authority Paul Schullery, a section on how to use the guide, and a national locator map. The parks are presented alphabetically region by region, with individual maps and geographical profiles. Colorfully illustrated descriptions offer tours tailored to the time available, whether it's an hour or a week, and tell visitors the best spots to enjoy hikes, spectacular vistas, wildlife, and more. An Information & Activities page provides practical advice on visiting-park contact information, camping and lodging, accessibility, pet restrictions, things to do, and special advisories. Excursions to nearby wildlife refuges, monuments, forests, and other areas of exceptional interest follow many of the park entries. From planning a trip to making the most of every minute, here's all the information anyone could want on the scenic national parks-the crown jewels of the park system-plus invaluable advice from National Geographic writers who know them well.

Michelin Green Guide Paris ReviewI have purchased several guides to Paris prior to my trip. They all were quite good, but in the end this was the only one I took with me, and I was pleased with my decision. My hotels were reserved well ahead of time and I was aware of various practicalities, e.g., how to use Metro and RER, where to buy groceries, etc. What I needed was a guide to various sites and a set of walking tours with maps. And this Michelin guide was perfect for that. The quality of the binding, paper, print, and maps is very high making reading the guide more pleasurable than some other guides I have.
I would definitely use it on future trips to Paris, and will be buying updated editions depending on how soon that will be.Michelin Green Guide Paris Overview
