Snorkel Bob's Reality guide to Hawaii ReviewWe stumbled into the Snorkel Bob phenomenon early in our first visit to the Kona Coast, and we were grateful for the no-poop attitude. We found a couple of lovely little restaurants, a terrific massage place, and even used some of the snorkel advice.
No, it's not a complete guide, but it helped us to avoid some of the standard-tourist pitfalls and to enjoy the place, not the prefab experiences offered by some of the land sharks.
And, yes--horrors--occasionally he mentions environmental and native-Hawaiian political issues. We think they're worth bringing up.

Frommer's Honolulu, Waikiki and Oahu (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewWe just returned from visiting Oahu in August 2006. We found that the "new edition" is at least 3 years out of date. It is clear that the author has not set foot on Oahu or visited Waikiki in quite a while as many of her resturant picks have changed hands, hotels don't offer services listed and the parks have all changed prices and hours of operation. We laughingly called it "The Book of Lies," for its inept and incorrect information. You would be better off seeking information from the local cabbies and street vendors. This book gives the traveler no information on out-of-the-way, unusual, or even affordable places to visit, eat, and stay. According to this book, there are no cheap, non-chain restaurants to eat at near Waikiki Beach (false) and the only trail worth hiking in Oahu is the Diamond Head Crater (also false). We abandoned this book for Yelp and a map of Oahu, which provided much more interesting recommendations.

But the Kindle edition for this book is a big disappointment. I downloaded it to the Kindle app on my iPhone. The table of contents is an incomprehensible list of subsection headings, not divided by chapter -- so, for example, if you're looking for a list of places to stay in Maui, there is no obvious way to find this information. And the chapters themselves contain no maps or other graphics, just page after page of type without clear headings. The Rough Guide to Hawaii ReviewRough Guide are the best travel books. They give a little history as well as details about where to stay, eat and travel for all price ranges - from the "on a budget" to the extravagant traveler. They also cover customs and are frank but humorous about it - like drinking, smoking, dress, what to expect - whatever! The only one that was not reliable at all was Rough Guide to the Dominican Republic. But otherwise, this and the 15 others I have used so far are fantastic, informative, cover everything for everyone's taste and whim in what they want to see, do, eat, drink, stay or learn and experience. They even give you general info like weather, money, politics, health, visas and prices for everything.
