The Rough Guide to Costa Rica 5 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Reviewbuy the lonely planet. the rough guide is a poor substitute.
this book is basically missing all of the most essential things that i look for in a guidebook. the maps are poorly done and lack detail. the maps also have very limited coverage. there is no pricing information, which means in order to compare places you have to take an extra step of actually calling to figure out how much they charge. the index is poorly organized. and it doesn't list distances from one place to another so you have to cross-reference a bunch of different travel times (usually only by bus, totally ignoring people who drive themselves) in order to get an estimate of travel time. i'm the kind of person who likes to create his own travel experience and using this book made me feel like i was groping in the dark at times.
maybe all of this is an effort by the authors to differentiate themselves from the lonely planet by making their guide a little "rougher." if that was their intent, they definitely succeeded. unfortunately for the authors, when someone is in a foreign country alone with only a guidebook to tell him where to stay, what to eat and how to get around, he needs his guidebook to be "comprehensive" and "accurate" rather than rough."The Rough Guide to Costa Rica 5 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Overview
Make the most of your time with The Rough Guide to Costa Rica, the definitive companion to this peaceful destination. The guide features practical tips for exploring the outdoors from trekking the lush cloudforest reserve at Monteverde to rafting down the rivers of Valle Central. There are plenty of practical tips on all the best accommodation, transportation, shops, bars and clubs and an insightful background on Costa Rica's wildlife, politics and culture. Central America & Mexico Handbook, 18th: The only travel guide to cover Mexico and the 7 Central American nations (Footprint Central America Handbook) ReviewFootprint does a great job covering this region of Latin America in a single volume. The pages are thin enough to pack a comparable amount of information as found in 5 different Lonely Planet guidebooks. The accommodation listings are succint but helpful, and the descriptions of the attractions are intelligently described. It would definitely be the book to bring for someone traveling in multiple countries. I have been disappointed with some of the Footprint guides for other regions of the world, but I loved their guide for Mexico and Central America.Central America & Mexico Handbook, 18th: The only travel guide to cover Mexico and the 7 Central American nations (Footprint Central America Handbook) OverviewFrom Baja California to the Darien Gap, this new edition of Footprint's acclaimed guide takes savvy travelers along the Ruta Maya, through beautiful colonial cities and sleepy villages, to deserted beaches and lush rainforests, while providing up-to-date recommendations for all budgets on where to sleep and where to sample tequila and eat tortillas, and the lowdown on the region's best fiestas. Updated annually, this is the most up-to-date guide to the region available.

The Rough Guide to West Africa (Rough Guide Travel Guides) ReviewAdmittedly, Lonely Planet's version is a couple years old now, but this Rough Guide is SO much better in terms of what to expect, how to get around, cultural aspects, what to bring, and a general cohesive overview of the region, it's sort of ridiculous. Lonely Planet's book is essentially useless compared to this. We're moving to West Africa for an extended stay, and this book has been helpful, informative, and even an interesting read. I'm glad that I waited for and then purchased this new release rather than just sticking with the guidebooks I had.The Rough Guide to West Africa (Rough Guide Travel Guides) Overview
The Rough Guide to West Africa is the most comprehensive and user-friendly guide to one of the world's hardest – and most rewarding – regions for travel, covering the 15 visitable countries from Mauritania to Cameroon in fifty percent more detail than its only competitor. Each chapter of the Rough Guide includes thoroughly researched hotel and restaurant listings, sections on everything from food and language to media and sport, and thoughtful background on the environment, culture, history, politics and music. The colour introduction highlights the region's attractions and touches on its great range of cultural and scenic impressions. Colour photo sections on Arts and Crafts and Fruit and Food Plants offer fascinating information and useful advice. More than 160 accessible and accurate maps guide you from the urban jungle to beaches and mountains. And an extensive index references every place mentioned in the guide.

The Rough Guide First-Time Around The World, 3rd Edition ReviewFrom visas to packing, from travel costs to the best places to visit, this book does an outstanding job in preparing a potential traveller for a long term international trip. I especially appreciated the "Basics" section which contained a wealth of internet resources.
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that this book is primarily geared toward young backpackers who want to travel the world on a super tight budget. Also the writer is British and his primary reading audience is European youth, among whom the 1 year RTW (Round the World) trip is almost a rite of passage. But there is also a much smaller but equally adventurous set of young American backpackers for whom the book would be just as useful. Personally, I began travelling on the cheap at age 18. But at the ripe old age of 37 I'm more inclined towards mid-range international travel. So sometimes I felt the writer's numerous suggestions on how to scrape by on pennies weren't 100% relevant. But at age 21 I would have loved his advice. Plus I'm so frugal by nature that I still kinda like it.
Overall it's hard to imagine a better book for the young backpacker or really anyway wanting to make a RTW trip.Highly recommended! The Rough Guide First-Time Around The World, 3rd Edition OverviewPlanning a trip around the world? Let "First-Time Around the World" get you started. Loaded with the very latest travel information, including all you need to know about round-the-world tickets to teaching and working overseas, this pre-departure guide will help get you make the most out of your ultimate journey. The individual country profiles highlight the best places to visit with country-specific websites and necessary budget information for your first time world trip. There are plenty of useful tips to help save you money, keep you safe and maximise your time on the road. The Rough Guide to Ireland (Rough Guide Ireland) ReviewThis was the 3rd "Rough Guide" I've used, and in my opinion they are the best resources for travel to new countries. It will guide you through Ireland with reliable information and a clearly explained background on everything from traditional sports and music to the country's history and literature. Lonely Planet Barcelona (City Travel Guide) ReviewI went to Barcelona recently, and in the planning of the trip I consulted four guide books:
Lonely Planet's Barcelona City Guide
Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Barcelona and Catalonia
Cadogan Guides Barcelona (Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls)
Time Out Barcelona
All of them were good. I took two with me: Lonely Planet and Eyewitness.
The reasons I chose those two:
LP specialises in listings, which seemed to be more up-to-date and comprehensive than either Time Out or Cadogan, It also had a good Excursions section which helped a couple of times when I travelled beyond the city. I also liked a couple of the walking routes they recommended. Information on matters such as public transport is comprehensive and detailed. I like the chapters on history, architecture and food as well.
I took Eyewitness because it unfailingly has a good quality map, which in my view is LP's downfall. Eyewitness always includes a Street Finder Index which LP does not, and LP often misses out on streets other than the major ones, which can be very frustrating, especially in a city like Barca where there are many alleyways. I never use Eyewitness for hotels - the information is scant and usually more expensive than my (more Lonely Planet) budget, but it has fantastic colour photos and cutaways of buildings, and illustrations which place buildings within their streetscapes. It's a nice book to read on the bus or train going somewhere.
Time Out's great strength was in helping to plan. It had a huge array of hotels, and if you were especially interested in nightlife, I would take Time Out. I was there primarily for a conference, and many of my evenings were organised. And I'm also night a great nightclubber, perhaps contrary to Barca lifestyle!! If you are - consider Time Out. Its maps were pretty good, but not comprehensive for the area I was staying in, beachside Barceloneta.
That is where the Cadogan guide excelled. Its maps were so good that I pulled them out of the book and took them with me. I would have taken the whole book, but for the weight in my suitcase! Its info about places and sights seemed accurate and comprehensive.

Lonely Planet Andalucia (Regional Travel Guide) ReviewI was traveling with three friends to Andalucia and we used the guide daily. The information that it gave on sites like the Alcazar in Seville or the Mezquita in Cordoba were invaluable in placing the monuments and cities in time, context, and importance. All of us, including the non-history-geeks of the group, loved the explanations and information on the sites, and someone was always asking "who had the book" at many points throughout the day.
The guide was very nice to have along when we were looking for places to eat. We ate at least once a day at restaurants that were recommended and we were not disappointed at any meal.
The map and distance guide at the beginning of the book were quite helpful in planning our trips as we stayed in the vicinity of Malaga and drove back and forth to Seville, Cordoba, and Gibraltar. They came in handy on the way back from Seville when we decided to detour to Ronda to see the Puente Nueve. The maps also helped us decide where to park once we got into a city or provide us with directions when we didn't have a larger, more detailed map available to us.
The only thing that we had a problem with was that the areas covered by the maps were too small for detailed driving instructions. However, it's a guide so that's to be expected. Pairing the guide and a GPS system would be ideal.Lonely Planet Andalucia (Regional Travel Guide) OverviewNobody knows Andalucia like Lonely Planet. Whether you're hunting for delectable tapas, exploring an Islamic palace or walking from village to village through groves of olives, this 6th edition is the ultimate companion to one of Spain's most exuberant regions. In This Guide:Tailor-Make the perfect trip with our hand-picked recommendations and inspiring itinerariesImmerse Yourself with local tips and insights to get you to the heart of the regionDetailed Maps and driving tours make independent explorations easy
