Fodor's American Southwest, 1st Edition (Travel Guide) ReviewWe bought this little guide as we were getting ready to visit the Keys for the first time. It served us so well- like a tour guide in my pocket! It takes you through all of the Keys, beautifully organized by the different islands, with maps that allows you quick reference to "key" places. We used it to visit the "off beat" places that many tourists miss but makes sure to guide you to the very popular attractions as well. Thanks to this little book, our reservations were made before we left and we were not disappointed. This trip for us was a short one, only 6 days, and without this guide, we would not have made the most out of the time we had. From places to stay, things to see and do, and historical references we felt totally oriented to the islands before the trip began. It made the trip easy, relaxing and a whole lot of fun!Fodor's American Southwest, 1st Edition (Travel Guide) OverviewFodor's. Explorer's Guide Yosemite & the Southern Sierra Nevada: Includes Mammoth Lakes, Sequoia, Kings Canyon & Death Valley: A Great Destination (Second Edition) (Explorer's Great Destinations) ReviewDavid Page's storyteller voice is clear and one you'll enjoy. For anyone looking to explore the Sierra Nevada - east and south plus Yosemite and all the way to Death Valley - buy this book. In-depth descriptions will guide you to all destinations off-road and on, from the lowest to the highest. The most beautiful sides of California and everything you'll need to get there and back.
All the history, geography and background to explore these incredible landscapes -- some of the other worldly. And inspire you to visit again and again. California has more than its share of National Parks, but none more exceptional than Yosemite, Death Valley, and Sequoia & Kings Canyon. David provides the essentials for first-timers or experienced travelers to these scenic wonders. Trails, lodging, restaurants, landmarks -- it's all there and more. You can use this as a guide, but just as easily read it as a first-person account.
That ribbon of Hwy 395, in and out of the Eastern Sierra, Mammoth Lakes, Mono Lake, and Mt. Whitney, it's magic. Every detail is revealed in the Explorer's Guide Yosemite & the Southern Sierra Nevada: Includes Mammoth Lakes, Sequoia, Kings Canyon & Death Valley: A Great Destination. I do wish fonts were larger and darker. Some of us who are visually challenged will be challenged all the more. There was a lot of ground to cover and this was the only way to get it done. This is the most special side of California and one I know well. And even better now with David's book id in my collection. Though some of my secreted places have been exposed. I like to share but some things I keep close to the vest!Explorer's Guide Yosemite & the Southern Sierra Nevada: Includes Mammoth Lakes, Sequoia, Kings Canyon & Death Valley: A Great Destination (Second Edition) (Explorer's Great Destinations) OverviewAwarded "Best Guidebook" by the Outdoor Writers of CA, "Best Travel Guidebook" by the Bay Area Travel Writers, and a Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation. The only complete guide to California's southern Sierra Nevada--some of the most stunning wilderness in North America--is better than ever in this revised, updated edition. Detailed reviews of lodging, dining, and recreation, plus outfitters, campsites, trails, and points of historic and cultural interest. More than 100 photographs by the best contemporary professional photographers, as well as from historic archives. Includes chapters on Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Mammoth Lakes, the Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra, and Death Valley."This is the definitive (as well as wonderfully eccentric) guide tothe immensity of the southern Sierra and Owens Valley. John Muir wouldbe pleased." --Mike Davis, author of City of Quartz and Ecology of Fear

National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States, 6th Edition ReviewThis is an excellent guide to the fifty-eight national parks. It doesn't matter whether you are interested in week-long back-country hikes, overnight camping, a long hike in the woods, sight-seeing, or just driving through: this book is an in-depth guide to the parks, their history, their features, and what you need to see, bring, and know. The one-star review entitled "Not A Resource" is completely off-base. This book correctly notes that it is a guide to the national PARKS--not national historic sites or national lakeshores. My son and I visited Harper's Ferry this summer while we were biking the C&O Canal. I enjoyed Harper's Ferry, but it is a national historic site and NOT a national PARK. Isaiah and I also stopped at Abraham Lincoln's boyhood home in southern Indiana on our way from Saint Louis; I would recommend this site, too, but it is NOT a national PARK. Frankly, the author of that review should remove her post AND apologize to the National Geographic staff. This book is now in its sixth edition because it is that good. Buy it and pack it with you.National Geographic Guide to the National Parks of the United States, 6th Edition OverviewFeaturing 375 color photos and 80 full-color detailed maps-more than any other park guidebook-this is the most comprehensive, up-to-the-minute book of its kind on the market today. A perennial favorite with more than a million copies sold in previous editions, it reflects National Geographic's century-long association with America's national parks system and its peerless reputation for travel expertise and cartographic excellence. The guide opens with an essay by Yellowstone authority Paul Schullery, a section on how to use the guide, and a national locator map. The parks are presented alphabetically region by region, with individual maps and geographical profiles. Colorfully illustrated descriptions offer tours tailored to the time available, whether it's an hour or a week, and tell visitors the best spots to enjoy hikes, spectacular vistas, wildlife, and more. An Information & Activities page provides practical advice on visiting-park contact information, camping and lodging, accessibility, pet restrictions, things to do, and special advisories. Excursions to nearby wildlife refuges, monuments, forests, and other areas of exceptional interest follow many of the park entries. From planning a trip to making the most of every minute, here's all the information anyone could want on the scenic national parks-the crown jewels of the park system-plus invaluable advice from National Geographic writers who know them well.
