Tell Them I Didn't Cry: A Young Journalist's Story of Joy, Loss, and Survival in Iraq ReviewLike a lot of people, I've been closely following the war in Iraq, and Tell Them I Didn't Cry brings a new and unique perspective the events in that country. Jackie Spinner's stories of her experiences in Iraq and the daily struggles she faces to report the news are emotionally compelling and highly captivating. In particular, I really enjoyed her descriptions of covering the battle in Fallujah and her stories about her friendship with Luma, one of her Iraqi colleagues--both of which helped me to understand why someone would choose to go to Iraq to bring the story back home to the rest of us.
One of the things that really makes this book stand out are the end-of-chapter essays written by the author's twin sister Jenny, in which she describes the struggles that she is facing on the home front struggling to come to terms with her sister's fears and her own. Together, Jackie and Jenny Spinner paint a vivid picture of what life in Iraq is really like for the journalists who are covering the story and for their families back home.

Claws ReviewI too admit that I am a Beta-reader for this book. I think that, if I'd seen this book advertised, I never would have picked it up. I too am a cat (and dog) lover and have an aversion to reading anything that discusses harming animals. BUT--
THESE ARE MUTANTS. These are not your regular domesticated cats. These are killers. I say, kill 'em all!
Ricky Sides has taken a tough subject and turned it into a very readable book. I didn't know what to expect as a Beta reader; I'd never done it before. I fully expected a poorly-written, error-laden manuscript that I'd have a hard time wading through, but I was pleasantly--and amazingly--surprised. It's a really good story. It moves along smoothly, it progresses well, and I was totally sucked into it and didn't want to stop reading till it was done.
At $2.99, this book is a bargain. Grab it while you can; the price is sure to go up once people discover just how good it is!
I haven't read any of Ricky's other books, but now I have to. I just have to. He's that good a storyteller.
And, Ricky, thank you so much for keeping the mutants from having kittens. That would have ruined it for me......Claws OverviewAlcorn Pet Food Corporation is working with an experimental cat food laced with hormones and appetite enhancers. The special food causes cats to add muscle, gain weight, and exhibit extremely aggressive behavior. When an employee threatens to expose the pet food as a threat to public safety, she finds herself out of work, her home ransacked, and all her carefully gathered proof missing. Meanwhile, animal rights activists release the cats involved in the testing because they are scheduled to be euthanized. These bigger, stronger, and more aggressive animals begin to prey on small game in the area. Then the ravenous cats turn their attention to people. Lovers, runners, hunters, dogs, deer, rabbits, normal cats, and even motorists begin to fall victim to the predations of these enhanced felines. An unemployed scientist, a small special ops team, a grieving father, a chief of security, and a homeless veteran join forces to try to prevent a catastrophe. When a murderer steals the secret formula that created the menace and sells it to eight foreign enemies of the United States, the stakes suddenly get a lot higher, because the most deadly biological weapon ever created has just been released. The genie is out of the bottle and the world will never be the same. To make matters worse, the scientist discovers that the first generation offspring will be even bigger and more aggressive, and then they learn that the food also affects dogs and rats.

Outcome, A Novel: There's more than a hurricane coming ... ReviewThis story had a nice interplay of various people and events which made me think of the movie Crash where multiple lives collide. Lots of variety here: a spunky pilot, a diligent doctor, a surprising surgeon, the grief of a police officer, a great dog, etc. I was hooked from the start with the double whammy of an aborted small plane takeoff and a woman and her dog racing against time to get off their beach. The dog is as personable as this author's dog in her last book and his plight as warmhearted. Nice read (and I learned some things!)Outcome, A Novel: There's more than a hurricane coming ... OverviewHurricane Ivan roars. Karen Puno plans and packs and scrambles to flee. The wind whips and sand blasts her car as she descends the beach bridgewith her Labrador Retriever. But up ahead, Karen has more to fear than the monstrous storm behind her. A week later, tension mounts in a cockpit in Kentucky and the weatherworsens. A feisty female pilot aborts her unusual takeoff, jeopardizingher passenger's task to harvest a comatose woman's organs fortransplant. Plagued with the Gulf Coast aftermath, a policeofficer is riddled with grief. In Peru, a worried husband receivesdreadful news and in Indiana, a deserving woman is given a secondchance. And in the seriousness of an operating room, an astuteanesthesiologist works behind the scenes while a surgeon is nearlynegligent. As divergent lives come together after Karen'saccident, they impact each other in permanent, intense, and heartfeltways, especially two college students whose paths cross due to theirmothers' fates. Together the teens discover true love, face thehurricane's devastation, and yearn to find the battered dog who escapedthe crushed metal pile into the blowing sand and gusty winds.

No Buddy Left Behind: Bringing U.S. Troops' Dogs and Cats Safely Home from the Combat Zone ReviewAs a soldier who recently rescued a mom and her puppies with the help of Operation Baghdad Pups, I can't wait to read this book!!! It's also at the top of my list for Christmas presents this year. What a GREAT organization to have worked with.No Buddy Left Behind: Bringing U.S. Troops' Dogs and Cats Safely Home from the Combat Zone OverviewThe love of a dog or cat helps heal soldiers' emotional trauma. One very special woman and program brings them back together after the war.No Buddy Left Behind is an animal book with a difference. It is not only about rescued dogs and cats, but also about U.S. soldiers trying to survive the horrors of war and readjust to life back home. It unveils the life-altering relationships American troops serving in the Middle East share with the stray dogs and cats they rescue from the brutalities of war. Overcoming monumental obstacles, Terri Crisp makes it her mission to save these wartime "buddies," get them out of danger, and bring them home to the soldiers who love them. So, how does someone get animals out of a country at war when normal resources are lacking and every step of a plan to transport animals could get you arrested, kidnapped, or blown apart? As Crisp soon learns, each rescue mission from first to last is a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants experience, and no animal is truly safe until its paws touch American soil. Terri and her team have saved the lives of 223 dogs and forty-two cats befriended by military personnel since February 2008—and No Buddy Left Behind finally tells this story.

Scout (The Puppy Place, No. 7) ReviewI love this book because me (12 going on 13) and my family foster dogs. And the author makes it sound exactly like it is in our house when we are fostering dogs. Only, we don't already own one.
Scout is an adorable little German shepherd, with a soft spot for helping people, the Peterson family realizes it will take a special person to adopt little Scout, but who will that person be? Scout has a talent for helping people, and it will have to be a person that will use that talent.
The only thing I wish this book had is Pictures, but at least it has a picture on the front. And it still so good it gets an A+Scout (The Puppy Place, No. 7) OverviewEven after Charles and Lizzie Peterson finally have their own puppy, they still foster other dogs and help them find the perfect homes.
Scout is a gorgeous German shepherd puppy and there two families are already lined up to adopt her. But when both families end up backing out at the last minute, the Petersons step in once again to save the day. Scout clearly has the skills to be a search and rescue dog, but can Charles and Lizzie find her a home that will help her reach her full potential?
