Pecan Gap: A Jake Somers Novel ReviewAs I read Pecan Gap by Don Castle, I couldn't figure out if I was reading a mystery, a murder mystery or a romance novel! This book has it all starting with Jake Sanders who is an ex-cop who owns a PI firm and is from Pecan Gap. Jake is investigating murders or friends and family as well as himself, as well as the mystery of the bones he finds which are then stolen. If you like true crime and mystery, you will like this book, it has it all. The book is very interesting and a good read.Pecan Gap: A Jake Somers Novel Overview

Missing Persons #3 The Venetian Policeman ReviewAfter reading the first and second mysteries in this series, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the third, and I am now waiting impatiently for the fourth. These books are really enjoyable, and I especially like the fact that they do not talk down to the teen audience they are directed at. True, I'm not in that teen audience anymore, but that didn't stop me from being thoroughly delighted with these books. I would highly recommend them as gifts for young teen readers.Missing Persons #3 The Venetian Policeman OverviewAfter assuming new identities and hitting the road to escape their wicked stepmother, New York City natives Sophie and Sam find themselves calling small-town Venice, Indiana, home. Venice is a far cry from New York&150which isn't always easy for the sisters&150but it's the perfect place for them to settle down and try to blend in. Scavengers: A Posadas County Mystery (Posadas County Mysteries) ReviewPosedas County is a wide-open range between New Mexico and the Mexican border and for the most part it is a quiet place. There are some areas that are patrolled rarely because there is nothing there. One day a pilot flies over the area and sees what she thinks is a body. She returns to base and the local authorities are on the scene almost immediately. A man is lying in the dirt, his faced so smashed in that they can't obtain dental plates.

Now that Bill Gastner is retired and the newly elected sheriff Robert Torrez is in Virginia taking a law enforcement course, the case is headed up by Under Sheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman. Even with her ailing and aging mother and her son down with the flu, Estelle copes with the investigation just fine until they find a second body buried in a shallow grave located a few miles near the first. Estelle thinks the two deaths are tied to together and Eurelio Scener, a person who acts like he knows more than he is telling, might have some answers but he has disappeared, perhaps involuntarily.

Anyone who likes to see an investigation played out from the beginning to the end will definitely like SCAVENGERS, a police procedural that has heart. Watching the Under Sheriff balance her home life with her work gives the audience an appreciation for the police performing duties that sometimes can be at the expense of their own families. Steven F. Havill continues to write excellent crime thrillers as his series keeps evolving with a true time line.

The Witness ReviewJosh McDowell is a renowned Christian apologist. I read his More Than a Carpenter as a teenager, and I heard him speak at a Christian conference. I knew he could make a convincing argument for the claims of Christ. But I wasn't sure if he could write convincing fiction.
The answer is yes, he can. The Witness starts out with a bang, literally, as security expert Marwan Accad's client is killed in front of him. Marwan soon realizes that not only is he a target, but he's also the prime suspect in his client's murder. As he travels Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East trying to uncover the truth, he endangers everyone he cares about.
The Witness's plot is engaging, and the story is well-written. I did figure out who the bad guy was fairly quickly, and that's the only complaint I have about the book. What I appreciated most was how seamlessly McDowell weaved apologetics into the plot. In some Christian fiction I've read, it feels like the author felt obligated to present the gospel but didn't really know where or how to put it. This results in a clunky and awkward story, and I (and I'm sure many other readers) tend to skim those parts. Perhaps because McDowell is so used to defending the faith he was able to easily integrate the Truth into this story without compromising the entertainment value.
Who should read it? Anyone who enjoys suspense.
I received this book free from Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.The Witness OverviewFrom Monte Carlo to Morocco to Egypt and into Petra, Marwan Accad is pursued by authorities for murders he did not commit. Tracked by advanced intelligence-surveillance technology, his every location is eventually found out, thrusting those he loves into danger. Nurtured by a bitter past that equipped him with what he needed for his company to thrive, Marwan Accad never looks back. Yet the way forward promises only uncertainty, and living each day is a lie in which corruption and greed play in the lives of man. For whose lie is he going through all of this? Even as Marwan races against time to find his pursuers and their motives, he must grapple with what is beyond his life, with what is eternal.

The Undead Kama Sutra (Felix Gomez, Book 3) Review"The Undead Kama Sutra" is Acevedo's third installment in the Felix Gomez series and while I have some minor quibbles, the overall effort shows growth and maturity in the writing and in the character development. Acevedo's Felix Gomez is an Iraq War vet turned vampire who has become a hard boiled private investigator in a classic noir sense. He lazily relies on his supernatural powers (hypnosis, stealth, etc.) to solve everyday cases and make a living while trying to balance his past as a human with his needs as a vampire.
Acevedo has created a plausible world of modern vampires that rivals that of Charlie Huston (see "Half The Blood In Brooklyn"). Both series portray the vampire world as coexisting in our modern world but in highly secretive fashion, with Gomez governed by and assisting, at times, the Araneum, a governing council for vampire behavior. While the texture and mood of their modern day vampire worlds are clearly different in the renderings of Huston and Acevedo, the vampire/human relationships and interactions and the philosophy, "laws", and governing structure underpinning their worlds are fun to unravel.
In this third installment, Felix is searching for the complete "The Undead Kama Sutra", a manual of sexual positions that promises great psychic benefits for vampires. This search ultimately teams him with Carmen Arellano, a sex driven vampire already deep into research on the manual. Their search is interrupted by the death of an alien who issues a cryptic warning to Felix to "find Goodman and save the Earth women".
This dying request launches an extended investigation that ultimately involves vampires, other extra-terrestrials, governmental and military conspiracies, a cosmetic industry conspiracy with aliens, a pretty darn good mystery, and some heavy discussion of sexual encounters that remain more talked about than fulfilled. Wow! If all that does not scare you off, then jump into the strange world of Mario Acevedo...it is a fun world to visit.
I enjoy reading the details of the rules and procedures for vampires living among the humans in Felix's life. For example, his joy at eating hot Mexican food laced with whole blood, or the various outcomes of his "fanging" a human along with how he controls the enzymes that have various functions in the process. Acevedo creates interesting fully fleshed characters and his plots are often unique to this genre. He still has problems with pacing at times, but that is becoming a minor quibble as his works matures. I recommend this series to fans of vampire literature or of supernatural noir. The Undead Kama Sutra (Felix Gomez, Book 3) Overview

Out of Season: Posadas County Mystery (Posadas County Mysteries (Paperback)) ReviewFor the past two decades, sexagenarian Bill Gastner has worked as an under-sheriff in Posados County, New Mexico. With only a few months to go, he eagerly awaits his upcoming retirement. Things are coming to the sheriff's department that forebode major change. His chief Estelle Rogers-Guzman is leaving office to move to another state. His best deputy plans to transfer to another office. Now his boss Sheriff Holman dies in an airplane crash.

The county supervisors insist Bill postpone his retirement and serve as the interim sheriff until the election occurs. Reluctantly, Bill acquiesces in their request. Bill begins inquiries into Holman's death. Pieces of a bullet are found in the body of the pilot. The National Transportation and Safety Board find evidence that a bullet hit the fuselage before splintering into the pilot. Pictures that the deceased sheriff shot show pastoral scenery. With the aid of the FBI, Bill plans to learn what was so important that two individuals were murdered to protect its secret.

Bill is a wonderful character, who, though weary, can physically and mentally keep astride with his much younger subordinates and peers. The linear story line cleverly hides the answer to the mystery until the end, but trying to guess why and what adds to the pleasure of reading OUT OF SEASON. Steven F. Havill keeps his tale simple yet difficult to figure out and that is the charm of the novel and the talent of the author.Out of Season: Posadas County Mystery (Posadas County Mysteries (Paperback)) Overview

Heartshot (Posadas County Mysteries (Paperback)) ReviewFrankly, I never expected to like Heartshot. As a Southern female reader, what did I care about an aging cop in a tiny Western town? But since the book was a gift, I dutifully started it and guess what - I got hooked!
Undersheriff Bill Gastner is widowed, his kids are grown and gone. A chronic insomniac, he rattles around his empty house, eats too much and smokes too much. The one thing he genuinely cares about is the little town of Posadas, New Mexico and its inhabitants. These days, he's worried that the newly elected Posadas sheriff has an agenda that includes pushing Bill towards early retirement and is understandably touchy about suggestions that he might be slowing down.
A Fourth of July town celebration turns to tragedy when a carful of teenagers speeds up to evade a police cruiser, loses control and goes over a cliff. While working the scene of the accident, Gastner and Posadas' lone detective, Estelle Reyes, discover a package of drugs amongst the wreckage. How did it get there? Which one of the upstanding kids might have had something to do with drugs? Posadas is close enough to the Mexican border that Gastner is not surprised by the presence of drugs in his town, but thought he had a better understanding of the town's youth. Is he losing his touch?
The townspeople are naturally upset, accusations fly and one of the bereaved parents has bought a gun. When the Sheriff suggests putting a young unknown officer undercover in the high school, Gastner has no better idea and reluctantly agrees. The situation quickly deteriorates and another senseless death occurs. Gastner feels personally responsible, neglects his health in pursuit of answers and ultimately puts his own life on the line.
One of the things I liked best about Heartshot was the relationship between the older Gastner and the younger, greener detective, Estelle Reyes. The author could have easily used the stereotype of grouchy misogynist/rabid feminist or gone the May-December romance route. Instead, I found it refreshing to note their mutual respect of each other's talents. Reyes' quiet, thoughtful approach to a problem complements Gastner's plodding, relentless style.
And I must say, I found the choice of murder weapon unique among mysteries I've read so far! (But I can't tell you, or I'd give too much away!)
I so enjoyed meeting Gastner that I have gone on to read the next two books in the series and recommend them all. But do read them in order, as the author builds on earlier events and you might spoil your own pleasure by skipping ahead.Heartshot (Posadas County Mysteries (Paperback)) Overview

The Last Detective ReviewCrais is a favorite of mine because he takes chances and seems to grow with his characters. For four years, fans have been waiting for a new Elvis Cole book -- and this tense, fast paced story will not disappoint many!
Be prepared for the darker tone we saw in L.A. Requiem; there is little for Elvis to wisecrack about; no one has brought him a case to strategically solve, instead he's vilified as the party responsible for the kidnap of Ben Chenier. Crais gives us strong dialogue and emotion, change ups in the story's point of view, some blind alleys and some down right insightful detective work.
Layers of Elvis' past evolve, and, for the first time, we see Joe Pike as vulnerable and unsure. Crais adds Carol Starkey, tough cop from "Demolition Angel" as the Juvenile cop assigned to the case. Starkey and Elvis are a potent mix.
True responsibility for the kidnapping is somewhat easy to guess, but Crais makes up for it by insuring that the story ends in a way that much of life does...everybody loses, but some lose more than most.
If there is a better writer in this genre today than Crais, please let me know who he/she is! Crais' work is outstanding...
Highly recommended, but more so if you've read previous novels in the Cole series. You can't invest as much in Elvis and Joe as characterized here, unless you've glimpsed the past. The Last Detective Overview

Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii ReviewThe television series character MONK continues with his quirks and crime solving in book form with MR. MONK GOES TO HAWAII. Mr. Monk afraid to be alone, when Natalie, his assistant goes to Hawaii to be in her best friend's wedding follows her there. In order to fly he takes drugs that had been prescribed some time back that changes his personality from stiff and Obsessive Compulsive to a wild and crazy guy. A side effect of the medication is that it takes away his powers of deduction, but while on it, he's a regular human being. Of course it wears off, and he is appalled at his own behavior. Swimming in a pool and with other people? Shaking hands with no wipes. Mr. Monk needs hand wipes after shaking hands, must have everything even (number of cans, chairs, room numbers), separates his food, etc. He is germaphobic. He is also a brilliant detective.
After the medication wears off, Monk is Monk, seeing clues, liars, and cheaters. As sharp as ever, he sees a crime when the local police write a woman's death off as an accident by falling coconut. Monk is sure she was murdered.
A television psychic is filming his show at the same hotel but who is this psychic Dylan Swift? And why does Monk dislike him?
Is Mitch (Natalie's deceased husband) giving Dylan messages from the other side for Natalie? Does Trudy (Monk's deceased wife) have a message for Monk?
You don't have to be a fan of MONK or to have ever watched an episode on television to enjoy this fast paced, witty, quirky, yet charming suspense. Mr. Goldberg has once again captured the nuances and idiosyncrasies of Mr. Monk and of OC (obsessive compulsive) sufferers. Mr. Goldberg makes us laugh as he takes us on Monk's wild Hawaiian ride solving numerous crimes. Only Monk could find a paradise like Hawaii to be a health risk, and barbaric -- roasting a pig in the ground? Mr. Goldberg gives us just enough clues to let us be MONK if we dare....I read this book in one sitting and loved every moment of it. I felt the tug of heart strings with Mitch and Trudy. I laughed, I was sad, I plotted who done it, but mostly, I loved it! An excellent escape, a great read.Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii OverviewSome people think Hawaii is paradise, but Monk knows that danger, like dirt, lurks everywhere. Look at Helen Gruber, the rich tourist who took a fatal blow from a coconut. The police say it fell from a tree, but Monk suspects otherwise. His assistant Natalie isn't exactly thrilled about Monk's latest investigation. It was bad enough Monk followed her on vacation, and now it looks like the vacation is over. Smooth-talking TV psychic Dylan Swift is on the island and claims to have a message from beyond-from Helen Gruber. Monk has his doubts about Swift's credibility. But finding the killer and proving Swift a fraud-all while coping with geckos and the horror of unsynchronized ceiling fans-may prove a tough coconut to crack.

Partnerships Can Kill: The Third Charlie Parker Mystery (The Charlie Parker Mystery Series) ReviewHalfway to a cozy, although not excactly Miss Marples, and it does have suspense and action. A great dog and a wonderfully sleazy accountant (he was my favorite character -the heroine is a CPA to compensate). Dialog always realistic but never crackles. Good on South-Western food. Best descriptions of office furniture since Chandler. I bought a bundle from Amazon's cheapo bargain list of authors I'd never read and this was the best.
