A Glint In Time ReviewThis review has a dual focus -- the book itself as well as formatting issues on the kindle2.
The science is interesting but relationships of the story feel forced. Our heroine: a young, attractive, intelligent young business owner, from a large city, has an attraction for an older man within hours of meeting him on a business trip a remote location in Alabama. They hold hands and walk on the beach. But then, she develops a love interest on the other male just a short while later on the same trip. She comes, she sees, she loves.
Other than some forced relationships and dialogue, the Kindle version is unacceptable. Wherever quotations were used, dingbats appeared. Then, during a key part of the book a time warp occurs...not in the story, but on the Kindle. A sentence begins with the characters in a conference room discussing technology and shifts mid-sentence to another scene entirely - an attempted kidnapping at another location. It appears that a page or two were omitted when the book was scanned. One conversation did not end and we do not know how they came to peril. In another spot, you read the same 4-5 paragraphs twice.
Overall, my experience with "Glint" was a little disappointing. The author would have benefited from a more attentive editor.A Glint In Time OverviewI'm thrilled with the way my new novel, "A Glint in Time" came out. Here is the premise: It is true that today, in university labs around the world, graduate students in physics are experimenting with freezing light and time. (Google the phrase Bose-Einstein).My one assumption beyond present science fact in this book is that a new technique gives experimenters the ability to send a small item to be sent back into time. All commonlaws of physics still apply... the farther back in time the less accurate.. great power is needed.. significant heating is takes place. So, if you could send a tiny white hot object back into time, what COULD you do with it? What WOULD you do with it. And, if you were successful in changing something, how would you know?(The paradox is that if you successfully changed an event, then it never happened, so you didn't need to change it.. so you didn't.)The action takes place in a US Air Force setting, in Florida, in the Pentagon, and around the world. There are good strong male and female characters who are easy to like. And, as you would expect, there are some bad guys who are easy to hate. The story is full of historical and place detail. It touches on the causes of the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, 911, and other major events in history. The action is swift, and you'll find the plot line very interesting. If you like military thrillers, if you like historical fiction, if you like alternative history, you will like this book.It also makes a great gift for anyone who might fall into those categories.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Pauline Frommer's Walt Disney World and Orlando (Pauline Frommer Guides) ReviewThis book really made my vacation at DisneyWorld. I'll admit I'm not a Disney 'fanatic'; I'd been once before and enjoyed it just fine, but hadn't thought about going back until this family reunion came up. I was put in charge of the DisneyWorld planning and bought several guidebooks -- this book was definitely the best.
It was clear that the author knew the parks inside and out, but he didn't seem to have 'drunk the Disney kool aid' if you know what I mean. For example, he pointed out rides that were disappointments and eating options that were overpriced, whereas the other guidebooks basically said it was all great, and gave you no caveats whatsoever.
I really appreciated the book's frankness and wonder if that's why it got those negative reviews from the folks who seem to go there over and over. Sometimes he was ironic about the parks too in a way that made me laugh out loud (never chuckled at a guidebook before).
I thought the book was very accurate. We ended up going the condo rental route thanks to this book (an option the other books barely mentioned but in this book there were a lot of details on it) and I have no doubt our group of 12 saved a good $2000 that way if not more.
I think this is an essential book for a Disney vacation.Pauline Frommer's Walt Disney World and Orlando (Pauline Frommer Guides) OverviewSpend less, see more. Wounded Earth ReviewI received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review. It is hard to find a story with a strong female protagonist who is intelligent, relatable, and likable. Larabeth is all of the above. I was immediately intrigued by her character and her past. Wounded Earth is a wonderful character driven thriller. The tension builds right from the start, there is so much more at stake than you think. From Larabeth's first strange phone call to the very end I was drawn in to Larabeth's life and the deviousness of Babykiller. The plot is well thought out and gets richer as the story develops, made stronger and more interesting as Larabeth's past is slowly revealed to the reader. I truly enjoyed reading this book, it was so much more than I expected.Wounded Earth OverviewLarabeth McLeod has beauty, money, several patents, a Ph.D., a successful environmental firm, and some very old secrets. When a man with the uncomfortable name of Babykiller begins stalking her, terrorizing her with stories of her darkest days in Vietnam, stories no one else knows, she feels compelled to fight back...until he exposes her most tender secret of all by threatening the daughter she has never met.She turns to private detective J.D. Hatten for help, breaking five years of separation and silence between quarreling friends. And then Babykiller shows his true capabilities. He is the head of an illicit business offering but one service--moving cargo worldwide for criminals who need their drugs or cash or smuggled goods shipped safely and anonymously--so he is capable of putting anything anywhere. He quietly explains to Larabeth, a well-known environmental executive, that he can even put defective gauges in nuclear power plants, and he will, just to get her attention. If she goes to the police for protection, people will die. Lots and lots of people will die. And one of them will be her daughter.Larabeth and J.D. are just a normal man and woman, up against a babykiller. But then, Babykiller doesn't know who he's dealing with...WOUNDED EARTH is the first thriller by award-winning mystery writer Mary Anna Evans, author of ARTIFACTS, RELICS, EFFIGIES, FINDINGS, and FLOODGATES, all available on Amazon in print, large-print, and audio editions.

The Officer's Wife (St. Martin's True Crime Library) ReviewOkay, I got it! Michelle was a bad lady, full of deceitful and murderous thoughts. She's the kind of lady we all love to hate. Good true crime story. But, reading this book is a lot like spending all day with my aunt Helen in Queens. I kept waiting for the author to write something creative to help move the story along, but it never happened. Bore, bore, bore! I just finished reading a similar story about another lady who conspired to murder her husband with her boyfriend (Dale Hudson's Dance of Death) and it was like riding a roller coaster. I couldn't put Hudson's book down. But with Fleeman's book, I couldn't wait to put it down. I assure you I won't be telling my friends about this book. Hey, I'm a generous guy, but two stars is all you'll get from me on this one.
The Officer's Wife (St. Martin's True Crime Library) OverviewA MAN IN UNIFORMHe was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. She was a psychologist in Fayetteville, North Carolina. On the surface, Marty and Michelle Theer appeared to be the perfect married couple. But no one knew of the double life Michelle was leading. Tired of spending one too many nights apart from Marty who was often away on his flight missions, Michelle turned to the Internet to meet men and relieve her loneliness. With each encounter, Michelle became more daring in her sexual escapades. But one man stood out among all the rest: former U.S. Army Staff Sergeant John Diamond.A WOMAN IN HEATThe more time Michelle spent with Diamond, the less she wanted to be with her husband. Then on December 17, 2000, Marty was gunned down on a street outside of Michelle's office building. Suspicion first turned to Diamond, and she watched him take the fall for a murder she had masterminded. When authorities went after her, Michelle vanished. For months, federal marshals hunted desperately for Michelle, who had resorted to plastic surgery to avoid the law. In 2002, authorities finally captured her.A CASE THAT SHOCKED THE AMERICAN MILITARY COMMUNITYFor three months, a jury would hear graphic testimony delving into the sordid details of Michelle's swinging sex life as the happy veneer of the Theers's marriage was quickly peeled away. But when it came time to decide Michelle Theer's fate, her own shocking actions would finally seal her doom...

Out There: The In-Depth Story of the Astronaut Love Triangle Case that Shocked America ReviewAs much as I like Diane Fanning and her earlier books this was a disappointment as was "Baby Be Mine". There were few if any interviews with family, friends, the victim, William Oefelein and co-workers, and certainly not with Lisa Nowak. There could not be because the book was written prior to courtroom proceedings. It appears that the author did extensive research on NASA and it strengths and weaknesses but that is not the reason I bought the book. I buy true crime for the backstory about the victim and the accused. That information can only be obtained after the trial is over. Unfortunatly this book was repetitive in its continuing explanations of the interworkings of NASA. I got it the first time it was explained, I didn't need it repeated more than once. I hope that the author will return to her excellent style as demostrated in "Through the Window".Out There: The In-Depth Story of the Astronaut Love Triangle Case that Shocked America OverviewLisa Nowak was dedicated, smart, and courageous--one of the first astronauts to fly a space shuttle mission after the horrific 2003 Columbia disaster. But that was before a fit of pure, primal jealousy landed her in an airport parking lot in Florida, where Lisa had a fateful, near-fatal confrontation with the woman believed to be her romantic rival.Did Lisa intend to kidnap--or kill--Air Force captain Colleen Shipman because she was involved with fellow astronaut William Oefelein? What was the nature of Lisa's connection with William: True love or dangerous obsession? As the details of Lisa's news-making journey unfolded--she donned a disguise, even wore a diaper during her 900-mile car ride to find Colleen--Americans couldn't help but wonder: Why?

Explorer's Guide 50 Hikes in Central Florida (Second Edition) (Explorer's 50 Hikes) ReviewI did a lot of research before buying this book to find a volume that had hikes close enough to me that I would be motivated to complete them all. I settled on 50 Hikes in Central Florida by Sandra Friend because it had the most hikes in my immediate area of any of the books I found. I also liked that this edition had just been released, and so should be up-to-date with any changes made to trails, etc. I was disappointed that Tenoroc, which seems to have been included in the first edition of this guide, was left out of this edition (Tenoroc was expressly called out in one of the reviews I read of this book, so I feel I could have expected to find it here).
My plan is to complete all 50 hikes in this guidebook over the next year (in no particular order other than how far I feel like driving that day and what extras they have to offer based on who is going with me). So far we've completed 2 of the hikes - Circle B Bar Reserve and Catfish Creek Preserve. Both hikes were accurately described in the book. The author gave detailed directions for the best hiking trail/path - it's not her fault I can't follow directions to save my life, at least not when the directions require me to turn the right way at the correctly colored blaze or notice a marker number when I'm busy looking at a snake sunning himself on the trail. Luckily she also provides maps in the book and gives instructions on where to find trail maps when first arriving at the park/preserve/trail/etc. When hiking Catfish Creek Preserve in Dundee, a hike that is as challenging as the author promises, we found the map exactly where she said it would be in the red mailbox at the start of the trail. That map helped us find our way back out of the preserve when I somehow misread the directions I'd copied from the book and got us lost.
Many of the hikes in the book are listed as under 10 mile hikes - not to worry if you are looking for longer hikes. The author has provided directions on how to negotiate the trails to get an overview of the area and hit the highlights. For example the trail the author marks in the guide book at Catfish Creek Preserve is only 3.5 miles, however there are many more miles of trails in the preserve which can be explored once you have completed her perimeter path. The trail she marked is perfect for someone who wants to get the lay of the land and catch highlights such as the statue erected for the founder of the preserve. The times listed in the book to complete each hike are generous and seem to be inclusive of a moderate amount of time spent enjoying the views. The hikes included have been selected to satisfy a wide variety of interests from wildlife viewing to beautiful vistas to extras such as indoor playgrounds for the kids and offer different terrains from challenging sandy hills to hardpacked (and in one case paved) trails.
Overall I've found this guide extremely helpful in discovering hiking trails in my area that I was not aware of, very descriptive of the trails and the extras that come with them (such as nature centers, monuments, etc.), and accurate in assessing degree of difficulty. This is a helpful guidebook if you are looking to explore a variety of hiking trails in Central Florida; it's a great way to get to know the area and to experience the natural beauty it has to offer.Explorer's Guide 50 Hikes in Central Florida (Second Edition) (Explorer's 50 Hikes) Overview

The Complete Walt Disney World 2011 Review"Twice the size of Manhattan, the 47-square-mile Walt Disney World is the No. 1 vacation destination on the planet. It includes four theme parks, two water parks, a sports complex, a shopping and entertainment district and 19 resort hotels. A visit here is not just an escape from day-to-day doldrums, it's a reawakening of that free-spirited, good-natured soul who lives deep inside you--the one your spouse married, the one you want your children to emulate. No other man-made vacation land so embraces creativity, optimism or a sense of wonder about the world." - From The Complete Walt Disney World 2010
Our first and only visit to Walt Disney World was in 2006, and oh, how I wish I had Julie and Mike Neal's annual guide for that trip! The good news, however, is that since 2007, the Neal's have published their fantastic annual guide not only for those who've never been to WDW and need to know what to expect, but also for those who want to revisit the wonders of the WDW.
A colorful smorgasbord of 550 color photographs, insider information, fun facts, event overviews, show snapshots, ride debuts/retirements, restaurants, hidden Mickeys, parades and so much more, The Complete Walt Disney World 2010 is the only guidebook to the parks and surrounding area you really *need* to have in your possession (although you may *want* more).
Right of the bat, the Neals tells us everything that's new at Walt Disney World, which is especially helpful for those who've been to the parks before. For example, Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen from Disney's The Princess and the Frog make their debut in the Magic Kingdom, as does Barack Obama in the all-new Hall of Presidents (he even has a speaking part!).
In addition to the gorgeous photos and fascinating facts, The Complete Walt Disney World 2010 includes:
*A quick, accessible overview on how to plan your trip
*Comprehensive information on Magic Your Way ticketing and Disney Dining Plan, including prices for various time frames
*The five biggest mistakes WDW newbies make (and how to avoid them)
*31 practical ways to save money (including free stuff at the parks, discounts and where to get coupons and saving codes)
*Navigating the parks with special circumstances (e.g. disabilities and children)
*Hour-by-Hour wait times for every ride and event
*Park Resources and prices (e.g. parking, lockers, ATM locations, etc.)
*Attractions at-a-glance including symbols for price range, fun factor, ride description, average wait time, length of ride/event, character meet-and-greets, etc., as well as mini-reviews (the Neals aren't afraid to say when something is cheesy, irritating or undesirable--but not in a mean-spirited way like in another WDW guide).
*Colorful, easy-to-read maps for each park
*Hundreds of Fun Finds, Fun Facts and Hidden Mickeys (for example, The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios fills 95,000 square feet with more than 60 Audio-Animatronic characters. The James Cagney robot wears one of the star's actual tuxedos, donated by his family.)
*Complete list of characters and where they'll be for photo ops and autographs
*Planned days in half-hour increments for those who want an organized day planner
*Fastpass information and return times
*In-depth overviews for each park (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom), as well as Downtown Disney and other recreational areas
*Restaurant descriptions, recommended fare, pricing and advice (for example, find out which restaurants are kid-friendly, which are noisy, which are pricey, etc.)
*Accommodations, including hotel descriptions, location, and pricing
*Special and seasonal events
*WDW telephone directory
At 352-pages, The Complete Walt Disney World 2010 is the finest guidebook to the parks and surrounding areas (I've bought all the popular ones, including the ones published by Disney). I have every edition of The Complete Walt Disney World 2010 (since 2007) and this outstanding guide by the Neals just gets better and better every year. After all, they've visited WDW over 1,000 times and go there at least once a week--experts, indeed!
So if you're wanting to visit Walt Disney World for the very first time (just you wait--it's an indescribable experience) and you're not sure which book will be the most helpful, accessible and informative, look no further: you want The Complete Walt Disney World 2010. It's not only good for those who want (nay, need!) the inside scoop on the parks, but also entertaining for the whole family with its eye-popping color photos, insider information, behind the scenes peeks and intriguing facts.
Highly recommended!
