The Lion ReviewNo spoilers here. John Corey, the ex NYPD homicide detective who now works for the Federal anti terrorism task force is the main character. This is DeMille's fifth John Corey novel (Plum Island, Lion's Game, Night Fall and Wild Fire). You do not have to read these novels to enjoy this one although DeMille does make references to events in those earlier books.
This story is set in NYC thirteen months post the 9/11 attacks. Corey is working alongside his wife Kate Mayfield an FBI agent. In a terrifying, suspenseful scene involving a skydiving trip, they encounter the Libyan terrorist Asad Khalil. DeMille presents the motivations of both Corey and Khalil; unusual for this type of thriller you can actually understand the roots of Khalil's terrorism. Events move along quickly following the initial meeting. The action is centered in the metro New York area and exploits the difficulties the federal/state/local agencies have had cooperating and sharing intelligence information. Corey stands above the bureaucracy and has a singular focus on bringing down the terrorist. The characters in this novel are engaging, funny and sharply drawn. Corey is non-stop with the wisecracks, I find them funny and occasionally laugh out loud funny but I can see how some readers might be annoyed by the frequency of these comments. I think you either like the Corey character or you don't.
This is a top-notch action thriller. Differing from some of DeMille's earlier novels, this one is tight and well edited coming in at around 400 pages. The novel gathers in the reader with a strong opening, the plot is well organized and believable, the ending a little abrupt. I think DeMille fans will be pleased with this installment in the John Corey series and no doubt staying up late to finish this thriller. The Lion Overview

Dead or Alive ReviewThe Amazon description has the book at 848 pages, but my copy, purchased at retail, is 950 pages. And--as with all the other Clancy books after Red October--I was the first one in line, and read it through on the first day. Harry Potter fans have their vices too, so I'm told.
"Dead or Alive" is in most respects exactly what you expect from Clancy--globe-trotting special agents whose names are now familiar. Exquisitely researched, down to almost mind-numbing detail on everything from internet protocols and encryption procedures, to the operation of weapons systems, and the layouts of neighborhoods half a world away.
It is a terrific book, and will be embraced by Clancy fans all over. It falls somewhat short of five stars for several reasons. Without giving away too much of the plot, I found the big targets in "Dead or Alive" to be implausible: why not go after Chicago or LA, given the ultimate objective to kill as many people as possible? Why target a huge South American oil refinery, when all of East Houston will do just as well? Just me, though.
But the second objection was what I consider a glaring, and most uncharacteristic mistake by Clancy. In providing background on Iranian army moves along the Iraqi border, he describes the Iraqi Shi'a population as a minority, and subject to persecution by the Sunni majority. In fact, it's the other way around. 80% of Iraq is Shiite, but Saddam Hussein was a Sunni, which is the primary reason the Sunni countries in the Middle East--which is all the others except for Iran--almost uniformly opposed his removal. It was unimportant to the plot, but I'm surprised that it survived what was probably double- and triple-checking by the editors, and no doubt by Clancy himself.
The Clancy books are superb, each for different reasons: "Red October" for naval and submarine operations; "Cardinal" for espionage tradecraft; "Clear and Present Danger" for small-unit combat operations; "Debt of Honor" for the workings of the financial markets, and so on. "Dead or Alive" doesn't have quite the intrigue those books do. And it is perhaps unfair to Clancy that he himself has set such a high bar with his previous work, that "Teeth" and "Dead or Alive" can't quite get to the same level that his previous works did. The technological detail is evident, as is the character development. But the sense of dread and foreboding and emotion that was conjured up before just isn't there. John Clark going after a drug ring that use prostitutes as drug mules (Without Remorse), or a psychotic setting off a nuke during the Super Bowl (Sum of All Fears), or another developing a strain of Ebola that is released in a dozen cities at a time (Executive Orders)--those books simply don't allow the reader to put them down. Also in those, he did a great job of developing the characters of the victims--the women used by the drug gangs, the traders and portfolio managers whose world was being turned upside down for reasons they didn't understand, the Secret Service agents who sacrifice their lives to protect a nursery full of toddlers, traveling salesmen whose insides were being ripped apart. They were deeply emotional, thrilling and exciting. "Dead or Alive" is very good, but not as good as those.
All that said, I'm already looking forward to his next one.Dead or Alive OverviewFor years, Jack Ryan, Jr. and his colleagues at the Campus have waged an unofficial and highly effective campaign against the terrorists who threaten western civilization. The most dangerous of these is the Emir. This sadistic killer has masterminded the most vicious attacks on the west and has eluded capture by the world's law enforcement agencies. Now the Campus is on his trail. Joined by their latest recruits, John Clark and Ding Chavez, Jack Ryan, Jr. and his cousins, Dominick and Brian Caruso, are determined to catch the Emir and they will bring him in . . . dead or alive.

Act of Deceit: A Harlan Donnally Novel (Harlan Donnally 1) ReviewHarlan Donnally was a former San Francisco Police Detective who was retired on disability after being shot on the job.
He's happy running a small cafe in Northern California but, as the story begins, he promises a dying friend to find the friend's younger sister, Anna, who he placed in a home when she was five-years-old.
Tragically, Donnally finds that Anna was killed years ago and her alleged killer was never prosecuted because he was found to be incompetent.
Because of a situation concerning Donnally's father, Dopnnally feels the need to find truth and searches for answers about what happened in the 1970s in the Berkley community of anti war protests and drug culture and what could have led to Anna's murder.
Donnally is on a mission to help his deceased friend and deliver justice that is long overdue. In this, he's the lone voice demanding that Anna's murder not go unpunished.
Donnally is able to find the accused killer, Charles Brown, and brings him to court, only to have a 'do gooder' organization claim that Brown is the victim. This makes Donnally wonder if there is more to this case than he first considered. Could some powerful person be hiding behind Brown's craziness?
Donnally's search takes him to places that neither he nor the reader could forsee. This freshness in plot is dramatically described and realistic. He's the type of investigator who doesn't give up and employees some creative measures to get answers.
I found this story to be very entertaining and look forward to seeing more excellence from the author, Steve GoreAct of Deceit: A Harlan Donnally Novel (Harlan Donnally 1) OverviewFrom the author of Final Target and Absolute Risk, here comes the first book in a thrilling series featuring a compelling new hero, former San Francisco homicide detective Harlan Donnally. With Act of Deceit,Gore enters the crime fiction domain of Harlan Coben, Robert B. Twice a Spy: A Novel ReviewEvery now and then, something comes along that you just can't get enough of. I'm thinking and hoping that readers will feel about the same way about the books Keith Thomson has put out. Because while I enjoyed "Once a Spy," I really, REALLY enjoyed "Twice a Spy," and thought his second effort was better than his debut! Among authors to talk about it are Christopher Reich, Chuck Hogan, and Lincoln Child, all with great things to say about this fresh, new talent.
Well, once again, we find Charlie at the racetrack to get things underway, and that racetrack is in Geneva, forty miles from Gstaad, where they've been staying. And with little to no warning, Alice finds herself kidnapped, and Charlie finds himself in trouble again. But the task for getting Alice back should be simple. That task is to simply find some ADMs (atomic demolitions munition) in a place called Martinique. No big deal there, right? Just call upon his Dad, Drummond, make sure he's in his right mind, then everybody can be safe and go home. That sounds like a plan, right? With Charlie and Drummond, such a plan is manageable, yet never remains so simple.
This is a world where you barely know who you can trust, especially for Charlie and Drummond. Your pilot could be talking about the simplest of pleasures, like eating ribs and enjoying a Bud beer, and for all you know, he could be a spook! And while trusting people is one thing, staying safe and alive is another matter.
Keith Thomson once again takes us to a place where the suspense is justified, and the adrenaline is fuel laced, and the hits keep right on coming! What hits me is that it isn't exactly so far-fetched that it could never happen. Terrorism can come in all shapes and sizes, and when you least expect it. Thomson isn't afraid to open up such possibilities, and he keeps the pages turning while doing so. And in the end, he does it so well that he has me starving for more! I'm hoping he cranks another one out just as good, just as quickly! Thanks again, Keith!Twice a Spy: A Novel Overview

Keys to the Kingdom ReviewSenator Bob Graham is long-time, honarable public servant who was two-time Florida governor and a veteran member of the US Senate. He served as chair of the influential Select Committee on Intelligence and previouly authored a great factual book, "Intelligence Matters" (published in 2004). Reading that book, I found it an amazing journey, well written and a very thorough account of recent American history -- and felt concerned after reading it that perhaps we were not doing enough to prevent future terrorist attacks. Senator Graham was quite specific in his recommendations for tightening security to further protect these United States.
It's obvious that Senator Graham knows a lot about external threats and the terror attacks on the USA, and the potential threats to the USA. He's a very good writer, so when I saw this new book on the shelf I picked it up. Wow! What a read...so this is a novel, fiction. Maybe, maybe not. This is a very powerful book, a page turner, hard to put down.
The book took five years to produce, and the subject matter is believable, plausible, surely possible. Sure, the intelligence community looked it over before publication and passed on the contents, so no real state secrets are revealed. But if just a fraction of what Senator Graham has written about is true - well, pick up the book for yourself and decide. Very serious matters involving the security of our homeland are involved -- and new light is shed on the September 11th events.
This book is fast-paced, action-packed and flows beautifully. Like Nelson DeMille? Robert Ludlum thrillers? This book fits well in that genre.
No doubt this will be a great summer read for many folks and part of the enjoyment is Senator Grahman's writing about certain people (and events) which will "ring true" for you, even if they are fictional characters. Amazing "facts" keep being unveiled.
The people and events depicted are fiction...right Senator Graham? Congratulations to you on a first-time, first rate suspense novel. Keep them coming, even if it takes another five years!
Keys to the Kingdom OverviewShortly after an explosive op-ed piece about the 9/11 investigation appears in the New York Times, its author, former Senator and Co-chair of the 9/11 Congressional Inquiry Commission John Billington, is murdered near his Florida home.
Enter Tony Ramos, ex-Special Forces operative and former aide to Sen. Billington and currently a State Department intelligence analyst. Billington, having sensed the danger he faced, has left Ramos detailed instructions for an investigation into suspected Saudi complicity in 9/11. Ramos, in conjunction with Billington's daughter Laura, uncovers a shocking international conspiracy linking the Saudi Kingdom to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.
Despite efforts to derail their investigation, whose scope encompasses Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, Ramos and Laura discover that the Kingdom has recently provided bin Laden and al-Qaeda with three nuclear devices, two of which are successfully detonated by the terrorists overseas. But they were just a warm up to the grand finale. The third device, Ramos learns, will be detonated off the California coast.
Now Ramos and a team of Special Forces must race against time to prevent al-Qaeda from unleashing nuclear disaster on American shores, and beyond.

Choke ReviewIn the novel CHOKE, Woods displays the main character, Chuck Parish, desperate and eager for a new job. Little does Chuck know that he will soon be mixed up in the biggest scandal of his life. Parish soon finds it extremely difficult trying to prove his innocence to the police and at the same time trying to figure out who the real culprit of the crime is. Woods defines the word page-turner in this excellent novel that will leave the reader guessing until the end. CHOKE is a great and easy read that will intrigue and leave the reader spellbound by the time he or she is finished. These are just a few of the many reasons that I give this book all of the five stars and highly recomend it.Choke Overview

Santa Fe Edge (Ed Eagle Novel) ReviewThis by far is the worst of Stuart Woods' novels. Nearly all previous characters are thrown in for name purposes only. The book goes nowhere and makes you wonder why it was even put out. I have all of his works and am usually pleased with the product. Feel very cheated on this one.Santa Fe Edge (Ed Eagle Novel) OverviewLawyer Ed Eagle returns-and so does his past. Santa Fe attorney Ed Eagle has recovered from his encounters with Mexican organized crime and his ex-wife, Barbara-who's much more dangerous. Now a mysterious new client has come his way, one who may shed light into some dark corners of Ed's past...and put him in danger once more.
