The Best American Travel Writing 2004 (The Best American Series) ReviewAs with any compilation of anything, whether or not this volume truly represents the "best" of its chosen subject is a matter of fruitless dispute. Pico Iyer's introduction, describing a supposed theme in this year's offerings of a certain melancholy or weariness to American travel writing as a genre, rings hollow; while the field of publications from which the submissions were gleaned is pretty limited. But once you get past those minor difficulties, this book presents an enjoyable variety of missives from American writers who have traveled to both welcoming tourist attractions and unwelcoming trouble spots where the increasingly bad reputation of America is highly obvious. There are a few self-indulgent clunkers about breathless "discovery" here (those by Heather Eliot and Joan Didion come to mind). But the collection does offer many surprises, such as Adam Kopnik's character sketches of New York City bus riders, or Richie Chevat's droll narrative of his completely typical and predictable family vacation. The great John McPhee travels cross-country with an independent trucker, while Mark Jenkins, Kira Salak, Paul Salopak, and Patrick Symmes report enthrallingly from the darker hellholes of third world war zones and disaster areas. If you're bored with typical travelogues of quaint tourist traps and scenery, you'll get a little of that here, but the best essays in this collection show that Americans traveling around the world these days are much more likely to find trouble and darkness. The Field Stones of Umbria ReviewThis is a delightful and funny story of a couple who embark on a new life in beautiful Umbria. Nina Hansen Machotka's wonderful way of describing the culture, the people, the country and of course the food and wine of Umbria, combined with gorgeous color photographs makes you want to go and book the next flight to Italy. The Field Stones of Umbria OverviewWe had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to do something crazy, so...We decided to sell everything in California, leave behind Silicon Valley and the University of California and move overseas to a small, isolated valley where time seems to stand still. We bought and reconstructed a ruined farmhouse, but rebuilding a farmhouse is only a small part of the bigger picture. The real stories are about Italy - the land, the seasons, the storms, the food and wine, the history, culture and art, the festivals and traditions, the field stones, and above all, the people. Join one couple on their amazing journey to a new land as they learn that the small moments in life can change you forever. Nina Hansen Machotka has worked as a technical writer and marketing communications writer for 30 years. She has published academic articles and technical manuals, and she plans to write several novels. Nina resides in Umbria, Italy, with her husband, the painter and writer, Pavel Machotka.

One More Day Everywhere: Crossing 50 Borders on the Road to Global Understanding ReviewI am a voracious reader. I've read probably 30 books, fiction and non-fiction in the last few months. This book was the most exciting. More than a travelogue, Glen Heggstad is at least an equal to Paul Theroux in describing his encounters with different people in strange places. I pre-ordered the book from Amazon, so I received my copy on the day it was released. It was fascinating reading! The colored photos of his trip were a bonus. I'm also an avid motorcyclist, having ridden at least a quarter of a million miles in my 75 years, covering most of this continent on two wheels. But reading about Glenn's adventures made me wish that I was young again. My son-in-law grabbed the book from me when I finished and my cousin Bob, also a biker, wants to borrow my copy when the son-in-law is finished. I advised them to get their own copy, but they can't wait. So, buy this book. You won't be dissappointed. As a side note, I don't think that Glen would mind if I told you that all royalties are donated to international aid organizations dedicated to building schools in the developing world. One More Day Everywhere: Crossing 50 Borders on the Road to Global Understanding OverviewIn 2001, martial arts–trained biker Glen Heggstad began a journey from California to the tip of South America on his motorcycle and made it as far as Colombia, where he was kidnapped by local rebels and held captive. Undeterred by more than a month of traumatic incarceration, the "Striking Viking" finished his trip after being released. Three years later he set out into the world on his bike again, this time searching for truth on his own terms in a world that had become strangled by a climate of fear. Starting his trip in Japan, he traveled through Siberia, Mongolia, Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia, and Africa, stopping in more than 30 countries to deliver his message of the real United States, as he knew it. Unique stories and gritty adventure fill this quest for new sights and insights amongst extreme temperatures, knee-deep mud, bureaucratic roadblocks, health problems, and loneliness.

Plane Insanity: A Flight Attendant's Tales of Sex, Rage, and Queasiness at 30,000 Feet ReviewI bought this book on a layover in Phoenix and didn't put it down until I was finished. As a very frequent business and personal traveler, I've seen many of the "nightmare" passengers described with such wit and humor by Mr. Hester.
It's always amazing to me how flight attendants are frequently treated like sub-humans by passengers, and how many people seem to lose all sense of tact and personal dignity once their boarding pass is taken. Having witnessed air rage, carry-on's the size of Texas, drunks, brawls and a million other human failings, reading Mr. Hester's flight attendant perspective confirmed what I've always suspected - they deal with a LOT, they're in a thankless position, and they're never appreciated until some heavy turbulence hits.
HIGHLY recommended, whether you're a frequent traveler or not - the humor is universal.Plane Insanity: A Flight Attendant's Tales of Sex, Rage, and Queasiness at 30,000 Feet Overview

The Travel Detective Flight Crew Confidential: People Who Fly for a Living Reveal Insider Secrets and Hidden Values in Cities and Airports Around the World ReviewI will call this book TD2, a sequel to the blockbuster, "The Travel Detective." Supposedly, the tips are submitted by air crew members (pilots and attendants), although the text appears in first-person format with Peter Greenberg as the author. TD2 has 370 pages of comments and tips on where to shop, dine, and visit in a couple dozen domestic and international cities; 24 in U.S. and Canada, 25 overseas. The section for each city has airport tips and city tips. A section with honorable mention cities (5 U.S. and 13 overseas) includes more listings.
Like the first book, the first item I looked up in the Index was incorrect; a misspelling in this case. I tried to not let that influence my impression of the book. Detectives are usually meticulous with their work and uncover/reveal useful information. Like the first book, however, the secrets in TD2 are few and far between. TD2 is just a listing of places to shop, eat, and get serviced. By the way, there are an inordinate number of "best" manicure and massage spots. If you crave the inside scoop on the best U.S. manicure spots, as suggested by a few flight attendants, then I suggest TD2. There are better choices for travel information, however. For instance, follow the suggestions of each city's freebie paper, with annual "bests" selected by the readers (residents).
TD2 is useful for those who desire to follow in the footsteps of air crew members or craves air crew recommendations for dozens of cities around the world. Anyone who does travel to dozens of cities would likely find little use for TD2 and would consult other sources for tips and advice. It is worth checking TD2 out from your local library.
Reviewed September 2002 by Charles McCool at LowerAirfares.comThe Travel Detective Flight Crew Confidential: People Who Fly for a Living Reveal Insider Secrets and Hidden Values in Cities and Airports Around the World OverviewThe author of the New York Times bestseller The Travel Detective brings you insider travel secrets only pilots and flight attendants know. Pilots are notoriously frugal, and flight attendants are underpaid and on a budget. They may hit one city four to six times a month, but they are there for only twenty-four hours (or even less) each time, so they always know where to go to get the best value for their money. In The Travel Detective Flight Crew Confidential you'll find: • great shopping (furniture in Atlanta, silk in Bangkok, leather in São Paolo)• great services (medical care in Paris and inexpensive manicures in Tokyo)• great food and drink (hidden ethnic restaurants in London, and the bars with the best attitude and cheapest drinks in Key West) • secrets to navigating the world's airports during layovers• what to do and what never to do, what to seek and what to avoid You get tips in crew members' own words—good, bad, or ugly—that you won't find anywhere else. Opinionated, often controversial, but always helpful, The Travel Detective Flight Crew Confidential is a resource no one who flies can afford to be without.
