Hanging Up ReviewI was looking for a light-hearted page turner and found one in Hanging Up. Colorful characters and the split-chronology device kept what could have been a dull storyline alive. These three sisters seemed very human in their struggle to balance independent lives with responsibility and in finding compassion for their difficult father. Sure, it's not literature and definitely has a Meg Ryan-movie flavor, but this is a satisfying read if you're looking for a warm, contemporary story and a few good chuckles.Hanging Up Overview

The Best American Travel Writing 2004 (The Best American Series) ReviewAs with any compilation of anything, whether or not this volume truly represents the "best" of its chosen subject is a matter of fruitless dispute. Pico Iyer's introduction, describing a supposed theme in this year's offerings of a certain melancholy or weariness to American travel writing as a genre, rings hollow; while the field of publications from which the submissions were gleaned is pretty limited. But once you get past those minor difficulties, this book presents an enjoyable variety of missives from American writers who have traveled to both welcoming tourist attractions and unwelcoming trouble spots where the increasingly bad reputation of America is highly obvious. There are a few self-indulgent clunkers about breathless "discovery" here (those by Heather Eliot and Joan Didion come to mind). But the collection does offer many surprises, such as Adam Kopnik's character sketches of New York City bus riders, or Richie Chevat's droll narrative of his completely typical and predictable family vacation. The great John McPhee travels cross-country with an independent trucker, while Mark Jenkins, Kira Salak, Paul Salopak, and Patrick Symmes report enthrallingly from the darker hellholes of third world war zones and disaster areas. If you're bored with typical travelogues of quaint tourist traps and scenery, you'll get a little of that here, but the best essays in this collection show that Americans traveling around the world these days are much more likely to find trouble and darkness. Bud, Sweat and Tees : A Walk on the Wild Side of the PGA Tour ReviewEntertaining, bawdy but sometimes poignant look at two very complicated lives that intersect on the golf course. The serious, introspective side of the book is balanced by the off-the-course exploits of drinking in the clubhouse and partying in strip bars. Alan Shipnuck expands on the humorous themes in golf that he writes about in his...column. His youthful, energetic style is perfect for a holiday read.Bud, Sweat and Tees : A Walk on the Wild Side of the PGA Tour Overview

Lonely Planet By the Seat of My Pants (Anthology) ReviewA good collection of travel stories. A lot of variety. Almost every story leaves you wanting to read more by that author. Many stories leave you thinking. The collection is a perfect companion on a solo trip, because the stories are short but interesting. When I finished the book, I didn't want to leave it in a hotel room. But I can think of several people who would enjoy it, so I guess I will end up buying more copies. Which I will be happy to do. (Not a big deal, but ... I wish the short bios were at the end of the stories and not at the beginning. I don't care about the author until I read the story. Many bios had a little twist that did not make sense until you read the story.)Lonely Planet By the Seat of My Pants (Anthology) Overview

Writing Los Angeles: A Literary Anthology (Library of America) Review"definitive" is a an overused adjective... but this volume is indeed just that. ulin's winning (and sometimes surprising) selection of material captures the breadth and depth of a literary milieu artfully and evenhandledly. (ulin must be uniquely well read and/or uniquely familiar with his material - some of his choices, e.g. robert towne's intro to chinatown screenplay, are fun just to consider in a potentially crusty dusty Lirbrary of America anthology). forget the heavy intellectual (and physical!) weight of this tome -- this is no door stop or boat anchor, its a joyous sojourn in the searing sun. brevity, clarity and wit!Writing Los Angeles: A Literary Anthology (Library of America) Overview
