Travels in Siberia ReviewI also read the excerpts in the New Yorker and was very anxious to get the complete book. I was not disappointed. This is easily one of the best nonfiction books (or books of any kind, for that matter) I have ever read. I am always wary about using the overworked word "masterpiece," but I truly believe this is one. Frazier takes us on a wonderful journey: his gradual discovery of Russia through its literature, history and by meeting several native Russians in New York; his deciding to visit the country with Russian friends; his efforts to learn to read and speak the Russian language; and his first trip to eastern Siberia by crossing the Bering Strait from Alaska to Chukotka. The longest journey he takes is by van with two Russian guides across the entire length of Siberia in 2001, arriving at the Pacific Ocean on September 11th. He returns to Siberia in 2005, traveling from Yakutsk to the village of Oimyakon, "said to be the coldest place on earth outside Antarctica," and along the Topolinskaya Highway to the see the abandoned prison camps of Stalin's Gulag. His last visit is in 2009, when he travels by himself to Novosibirsk, Siberia's largest city. Throughout the book, Frazier's descriptions of the forests, the steppes, the taiga, the mountains, the rivers and lakes, the cities, the villages, the monuments and outposts, as well as the horrific mosquitoes and the often questionable food, are simply riveting. He meets a truly remarkable assortment of men and women from all walks of Siberian life, learning how they survive, and often thrive, in such a difficult, unforgiving place. He recounts tales of many figures, both famous and obscure, from Siberia's incredible past: Genghis Khan and the Mongol hordes, the revolutionary Decembrists of the 1820s, exiles like Dostoyevsky and those who died in the horrific Soviet prison camps, Czar Nicholas II, Rasputin, Rudolph Nureyev, and even Yul Brenner. And like all great writers of nonfiction, Frazier sees things that others would miss and makes discoveries that will take your breath away; he is always looking for the unobvious and finding the most fascinating wherever he goes. Consequently, we are treated to a unique portrait of an amazing place by one of our finest writers. Ian Frazier has written a great, great book.Travels in Siberia Overview

The Officer's Wife (St. Martin's True Crime Library) ReviewOkay, I got it! Michelle was a bad lady, full of deceitful and murderous thoughts. She's the kind of lady we all love to hate. Good true crime story. But, reading this book is a lot like spending all day with my aunt Helen in Queens. I kept waiting for the author to write something creative to help move the story along, but it never happened. Bore, bore, bore! I just finished reading a similar story about another lady who conspired to murder her husband with her boyfriend (Dale Hudson's Dance of Death) and it was like riding a roller coaster. I couldn't put Hudson's book down. But with Fleeman's book, I couldn't wait to put it down. I assure you I won't be telling my friends about this book. Hey, I'm a generous guy, but two stars is all you'll get from me on this one.

They Called It Pilot Error: True Stories Behind General Aviation Accidents ReviewI was lounging in the FBO killing time when I started thumbing through this book. I was patiently waiting for several level 3-4 cells to pass over the airport so I could be on my way. I'm an instrument-rated, multi-engine pilot. Like most safety-conscious pilots, I regularly read NTSB accident synopses, not out of morbid curiosity but in the hopes of learning something new from the mistakes of others. Cohn's book had an interesting title and it didn't take long to get drawn into one rather vivid account of a Cardinal picking up ice on an approach into Charleston. I bought the book and tucked it away in my bag with the intention of reading more later.
Wish I hadn't wasted the $20! This book has several key problems. First, it is a work of fiction. The author claims that the accounts of pilot error are 'based on fact' and are 'carefully' researched, but since no real names, locations, (or facts?) are given, it is impossible to determine how much of the book is really fiction. The author also claims to have 6,400 hours under his belt, but his aviation terminology and basic aeronautical knowledge are so deficient that I have serious doubts as to the veracity of that claim. Furthermore, to the best of my knowlege, the author never really provides his credentials; is he a commercial pilot? CFI? Pilots are skeptical people by nature; our lives depend on it. I have my doubts about the legitimacy of Robert S. Cohn, master pilot.
Cohn thinks that "oxygen concentration levels" (?) are lower at night, and that this contributes to hypoxia. Clearly, Cohn is not familiar with the Aeronautical Information Manual, which is a basic bible for every pilot -- ranging from student to a commercial, instrument-rated pilot. Ironically, Cohn attacks the FAA for not requiring pilot applicants to more thoroughly demonstrate a knowledge of day/night oxygen requirements/recommendations and how to combat hypoxia on their checkrides. Cohn consistently refers to the attitude indicator (artificial horizon) as the "HSI" in one amusing passage. No aviation editor could have missed these glaringly erroneous references, which leads me to believe that Cohn wrote and edited his own book. That is suspicious in and of itself. Cohn also likens stall entries to 'intentionally slamming the brakes on in your car,' as though it were a dangerous and useless exercise; yet, later in the book, in a fictionalized tale wherein a private pilot stalls his ice-laden aircraft, his 'automatic response to release back pressure on the yoke' probably saved his (imaginary) life. Is this guy really a pilot? I have a hard time believing it.
This book is a platform for some of the author's ill-conceived notions that the FAA should allow ATC to supercede the Pilot-In-Command's authority in the aircraft. Both ATC and pilots are well aware of their responsibilities, and the system produces millions of safe flights per year. Perfect? No, but the real problems are not where the author is pointing his fingers - the problems are technology and congestion, not bumbling pilots running amok in the skies.
A student pilot could poke this book full of so many holes that it would never be airworthy. As a work of pure fiction it is mildly entertaining; as a soapbox for anti-general aviation propaganda, it is a) poorly researched, b) embarassingly inaccurate on basic facts, and c) unconvincing at best.They Called It Pilot Error: True Stories Behind General Aviation Accidents OverviewHuman factors are reportedly responsible for 90% of all general aviation accidents and incidents. Robert Cohn hopes to reduce that astounding figure with this book. Drawing on completed NTSB investigation findings on actual accidents, many of which proved fatal, Cohn sheds light on serious flaws in both pilot procedures and FAA rules and training requirements. He examines how and why a variety of normal human frailties adversely effect pilot performance, a subject rarely addressed by the FAA.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Informant: A True Story ReviewOn the rare occasions when the banal details of corporate crime are uncovered, developed and prosecuted, the inside story is sometimes difficult to believe. Even more often, these stories, particularly those involving complex financial chicanery, fail to survive the conversion to film or print.
An obvious exception is "The Informant," Kurt Eichenwald's extraordinary new book about the Archer Daniels Midland Company price-fixing scandal in the mid-1990s. Mr. Eichenwald, an award-winning journalist at The New York Times, has balanced a cast of a nearly unimaginable characters with meticulous reporting and sourcing built on endless of hours of government tapes, documentary evidence and interviews.
Mr. Eichenwald's masterfully constructed narrative describes how ADM, the self-styled "Supermarket to the World," conspired with international competitors to corner food additive markets. The book focuses on Mark Whitacre, the wildly contradictory former ADM executive whose secret cooperation with the FBI apparently was intended to hide his own crimes. As Mr. Eichenwald writes, the book is about the "malleable nature of the truth," and how nothing in the ADM case was necessarily what it appeared to be. Along the way, the story is told in a way that "lend[s] temporary credence to the many lies told in this investigation," according to Mr. Eichenwald. In the end, the book accomplishes what few of its kind have: it has woven an otherwise tedious collection of technical and legal details and deceptions into one of the best tales of corporate crime in the past 20 years.
As the federal government found in its development of the ADM case, it's difficult to humanize corporate schemes, whether in civil or criminal litigation, or in the news or entertainment media. Mr. Eichenwald not only overcomes this obstacle, he has succeeded in producing a book that reads like a thriller. At one point in the book, in fact, a few of the characters even question whether Mr. Whitacre is acting out scenes from a John Grisham best-seller, "The Firm." Mr. Eichenwald also is fortunate to inherit an amazing cast of characters that includes not only Mr. Whitacre, the Andreas family, and high-level law enforcement agencies but also ADM's political network -- which at various times has included Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bob Dole, Dan Quayle, former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney, and powerful Washington and New York law firms, among others.
My admiration of the author emanates in part from his reporting of the Prudential-Bache financial scandal in the early 1990s, both in The New York Times and in his book "Serpent on the Rock." As a part of the legal team that successfully represented 5,800 victimized investors in civil litigation against Pru-Bache, I believe Mr. Eichenwald was unequalled among journalists in his command of that subject matter. Even then, where "Serpent on the Rock" succeeded nicely in chronicling the Pru-Bache scandal, "The Informant" excels.
I believe that this book puts Mr. Eichenwald into the elite company of Jonathan Harr ("A Civil Action"), James B. Stewart ("Den of Thieves" and "Blind Eye"), Ken Auletta ("Greed and Glory on Wall Street"), and Bryan Burrough and John Helyar ("Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco").The Informant: A True Story Overview

The Anatomy of Motive : The FBI's Legendary Mindhunter Explores the Key to Understanding and Catching Violent Criminals ReviewDouglas has trod this ground before, but never so well as this book. It's my favorite of his writings. Some critics claim that Douglas is unbearably arrogant about his work, but with his track record, who can blame him? Criminal profiling has got to be one of the most fascinating subjects; a science combining intuition, detective work, and common sense.
Douglas gives overviews of different types of killers: serial, mass, spree, and tells how they differ from each other. Those profiled include Andrew Cunanan and the Tylenol poisoner. Douglas also profiles two of the most intriguing killers, in my opinion, John List and Charles Whitman. Two more different people could not exist, and yet they both resorted (chose, in Douglas' opinion) to murder. Douglas main refrain is that these people, through a combination of physiological and psychological factors, environmental conditions, and situation stressors, choose to take the course they do. That is, lots of people may have a brutal upbringing and negative life situations, but do not kill people. So, it is a choice, and not a compulsion they cannot avoid (as Douglas puts it, none of these killers would murder while a uniformed policeman stood nearby).
At the end of the book, Douglas gives us four scenarios and gives us an opportunity to figure out whodunit. If you've been reading carefully, he says, you should be able to tell. I got three out of the four, so I guess I'm headed for the FBI academy!

Seduced by Evil: The True Story of a Gorgeous Stripper-Turned-Suburban-Mom, Her Secret Past, and a Ruthless Murder ReviewThere are three main reasons why I consider this to be better than the average true crime book. First, the author writes skillfully--there are no awkward passages or unnecessary padding. Second, there is a good balance between background, details of the case, and description of the trial. (Too often true crime writers linger over the gruesome aspects of the case, such as the crime scene and autopsy reports, and divulge irrelevant information about the principle characters, and either skip over the trial itself or offer pages and pages of redundant testimony). And third, the author takes a neutral attitude toward law enforcement--the investigators' mistakes aren't glossed over, but at the same time the author doesn't indulge in hagiographic treatment of the police.
This is a fairly straighforward, chronological account of an interesting case set in Alaska and the two trials that resulted.
