These Precious Hours ReviewI just finished reading These Precious Hours, a great book by an underappreciated author, Michael Corrigan. Corrigan has the gift of the great Irish storytellers. I've read a couple of Corrigan's stories before, but most were new to me. I had different favorites along the way, but the last story, "Return of the Exiles," was perfect. The ghost of Corrigan's late wife haunts every page, along with a trio of witches, and a few other spectres here and there. All in all a good read! These Precious Hours Overview"These Precious Hours" is a collection of related and interconnected stories concerning loss and recovery. At the end, many of the characters meet. Declan Mulligan has lost a wife and visits Ireland to connect with a remote past. Dexter Flanagan has lost a beautiful woman to another but writes a great love song. After a personal tragedy, Sean Dineen joins his ailing ex-wifeto see the wedding of their son in Paraguay. ABOUT THE AUTHORMichael Corrigan holds an MA in English from San Francisco State and attended the American Film Institute. He worked with several theatre artists including Sam Shepard and Peter Coyote and was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize for a story, "Free Fall." Idaho State University Press published his grief memoir, A Year and a Day, dedicated to his late wife, Karen. "These Precious Hours" is his fifth book.

Second Watch ReviewOfficer Clausen's second book is just as good as his first, "First Avenue," but in a different way. Here he writes not one, not two, but THREE very sympathetic and believable female characters (rare for a man). He also devotes a few chapters to the interior monologues of Daniel, the 8-year old central character of this story, and these are rendered with sensitivity and insight without condescension. He even creates a character who is homeless-by-choice, whom he neither vilifies nor glorifies. These are difficult tightropes to walk, and Clausen dances fearlessly across the rope.
The Seattle locations are so accurate that I recognized most of them immediately before he even named them. I think I've even met some of the background characters who work there!
The story is a tough, gritty crime novel which has at its center some crimes which are not easy to watch transpire, so this is not a lightweight or casual book. It is, however, a very well-crafted novel which is at least as good as his first.
That's high praise indeed.Second Watch Overview
