The Third City: Chicago and American Urbanism (Chicago Visions and Revisions) Review"The Third City" is on the ROROTOKO list of cutting-edge intellectual nonfiction. The book interview of Professor Bennett ran here as the cover feature on December 1, 2010.The Third City: Chicago and American Urbanism (Chicago Visions and Revisions) Overview
Our traditional image of Chicago—as a gritty metropolis carved into ethnically defined enclaves where the game of machine politics overshadows its ends—is such a powerful shaper of the city's identity that many of its closest observers fail to notice that a new Chicago has emerged over the past two decades. Larry Bennett here tackles some of our more commonly held ideas about the Windy City—inherited from such icons as Theodore Dreiser, Carl Sandburg, Daniel Burnham, Robert Park, Sara Paretsky, and Mike Royko—with the goal of better understanding Chicago as it is now: the third city.Bennett calls contemporary Chicago the third city to distinguish it from its two predecessors: the first city, a sprawling industrial center whose historical arc ran from the Civil War to the Great Depression; and the second city, the Rustbelt exemplar of the period from around 1950 to 1990. The third city features a dramatically revitalized urban core, a shifting population mix that includes new immigrant streams, and a growing number of middle-class professionals working in new economy sectors. It is also a city utterly transformed by the top-to-bottom reconstruction of public housing developments and the ambitious provision of public works like Millennium Park. It is, according to Bennett, a work in progress spearheaded by Richard M. Daley, a self-consciously innovative mayor whose strategy of neighborhood revitalization and urban renewal is a prototype of city governance for the twenty-first century. The Third City ultimately contends that to understand Chicago under Daley's charge is to understand what metropolitan life across North America may well look like in the coming decades.

The Civil Engineering Handbook, Second Edition (New Directions in Civil Engineering) ReviewThis is an incredible reference book for any civil engineer. The price may appear a bit high but for the amount of information you are getting one could argue it is actually cheap! This is the most inclusive handbook I have ever used. The Civil Engineering Handbook, Second Edition (New Directions in Civil Engineering) OverviewFirst published in 1995, the award-winning Civil Engineering Handbook soon became known as the field's definitive reference. To retain its standing as a complete, authoritative resource, the editors have incorporated into this edition the many changes in techniques, tools, and materials that over the last seven years have found their way into civil engineering research and practice. The Civil Engineering Handbook, Second Edition is more comprehensive than ever. You'll find new, updated, and expanded coverage in every section. In fact, more than 1/3 of the handbook is new or substantially revised. In particular you'll find increased focus on computing reflecting the rapid advances in computer technology that has revolutionized many aspects of civil engineering. You'll use it as a survey of the field, you'll use it to explore a particular subject, but most of all you'll use The Civil Engineering Handbook to answer the problems, questions, and conundrums you encounter in practice.

Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture ReviewIn this book, the reader is exposed to the integrated building concept through the exposition of theory, and the presentation ofindividual case studies. The case studies are organized into seven categories: Laboratories, Offices, Airport Terminals, Pavilions, Residential Architecture, High Tech Architecture, and Green Architecture.
The author states, "What gravity is to structure...ecology is to Green." Through the case studies, icons of modern architecture, located all over the planet, are examined via an analysis of their systems. Through this vehicle, the reader learns from the masters.
Each case study starts with a project description accompanied by a fact sheet. Program is broken down into client, brief, site, and climate. The case studies are enriched with biographical information on the individual architects. The analyses continue with details of intent, critical technical issues, etc., and conclude with a discussion of the success of the different aspects of the project.
To quote the author, "this book shows how case studies can be used to understand the integration of building systems and how inquiry into integration contributes to architectural success."
A mastery of the concepts in Leonard Bachman's book can arm the architect with valid thought processes to free his/her design intuition from the constraints prevalent in early 21st century construction management.
This book serves both as a reminder of ancient regional responses to climate and site, and a preparation for understanding the symbiotic building technologies now being built by world class practitioners.Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture OverviewAn "anatomical" study of building systems integration with guidelines for practical applications
Through a systems approach to buildings, Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture details the practice of integration to bridge the gap between the design intentions and technical demands of building projects. Analytic methods are introduced that illustrate the value, benefit, and application of systems integration, as well as guidelines for selecting technical systems in the conceptual, schematic, and design development stages of projects.
Landmark structures such as Eero Saarinen's John Deere Headquarters, Renzo Piano's Kansai International Airport, Glenn Murcutt's Magney House, and Richard Rogers's Lloyd's of London headquarters are presented as part of an extensive collection of case studies organized into seven categories:

Laboratories
Offices
Pavilions
Green Architecture
High Tech Architecture
Airport Terminals
Residential Architecture

Advanced material is provided on methods of integration, including an overview of integration topics, the systems basis of architecture, and the integration potential of various building systems. An expanded case study of Ibsen Nelsen's design for the Pacific Museum of Flight is used to demonstrate case study methods for tracing integration through any work of architecture.
Visually enhanced with more than 300 illustrations, diagrams, and photographs, Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture is a valuable reference guide for architecture and civil engineering students, as well as architects, engineers, and other professionals in the construction industry.

Splintering Urbanism: Networked Infrastructures, Technological Mobilities and the Urban Condition ReviewThis explores the sociopolitical causes and ramifications in the development of modern infrastructure. But due to continual stating and restating of simple points, a reader loses track of what the authors are attempting to train his attention on. With all the research the authors have done on the subject matter, you might expect that; but it could take you a year of poring over this to get the full thrust of this. It certainly isn't concise.
The books real problem is the writing style. The text is a hybrid of bureaucratic and academic writing, defensively constructed to obviate charges of ambiguity or assumption. Here's a typical sentence:
"Thus we could argue that the supplementation of state forms of collectivised infrastructure development that supported the modern ideal with privatised regimes that need to attract international finance capital seems very likely to support the splintering of integrated and bundled networks into a myriad of individually financed and managed infrastructure projects."
You can go a few pages before encountering a sentence that hasn't been overworked like this. Torpid.
The other big problem is it's design. What you get out of it will depend on whether you can overcome the disruptive format. Just when you've finally bit into a passage of that writing, a new heading in boldface interrupts both the text and your concentration. This occurs once or twice a page for 400 pages. It isn't helpful. Is this a book, or is it six hundred short articles? Frequent sidebars also induce reader distraction.Splintering Urbanism: Networked Infrastructures, Technological Mobilities and the Urban Condition OverviewSplintering Urbanism makes an international and interdisciplinary analysis of the complex interactions between infrastructure networks and urban spaces. It delivers a new and powerful way of understanding contemporary urban change, bringing together discussions about:*globalization and the city*technology and society*urban space and urban networks*infrastructure and the built environment*developed, developing and post-communist worlds. With a range of case studies, illustrations and boxed examples, from New York to Jakarta, Johannesberg to Manila and Sao Paolo to Melbourne, Splintering Urbanism demonstrates the latest social, urban and technological theories, which give us an understanding of our contemporary metropolis.

Forever Open, Clear, and Free: The Struggle for Chicago's Lakefront ReviewHere is the story the subtitle suggests: Chicagoans gradually realized that the lands fronting Lake Michigan were more than mere wastelands to be utilized variously by industrialists and conventioneers, and this realization led citizens from A. Montgomery Ward down to the plainest of the plain to do battle with a series of regimes which seemed to have a very odd construction of the phrase, from the city charter, "forever open, free and clear". It is the people, not the government of Chicago, whom we should thank that parts of Grant, Jackson, and Lincoln Parks are still "open, free and clear".
Beyond her immediate theme, however, Lois Wille has written an excellent concise introduction to the history of Chicago, which will especially appeal to those who approach history from the viewpoint of non-conformism. And in a city like Chicago, you're either part of the Machine or a non-conformist.
Lois Wille was a colleague of Mike Royko, all the way from the Chicago Daily News days. She has all of his creativity and productive skepticism, and, in her own way, did just as much to worry and afflict the destructive establishmentarians who by fair means and foul seem to wind up governing the City of Chicago.Forever Open, Clear, and Free: The Struggle for Chicago's Lakefront OverviewOf the thirty miles of Lake Michigan shoreline within the city limits of Chicago, twenty-four miles is public park land. The crown jewels of its park system, the lakefront parks bewitch natives and visitors alike with their brisk winds, shady trees, sandy beaches, and rolling waves. Like most good things, the protection of the lakefront parks didn't come easy, and this book chronicles the hard-fought and never-ending battles Chicago citizens have waged to keep them "forever open, clear, and free."Illustrated with historic and contemporary photographs, Wille's book tells how Chicago's lakefront has survived a century of development. The story serves as a warning to anyone who thinks the struggle for the lakefront is over, or who takes for granted the beauty of its public beaches and parks. "A thoroughly fascinating and well-documented narrative which draws the reader into the sights, smells and sounds of Chicago's story. . . . Everyone who cares about the development of land and its conservation will benefit from reading Miss Wille's book."—Daniel J. Shannon, Architectural Forum "Not only good reading, it is also a splendid example of how to equip concerned citizens for their necessary participation in the politics of planning and a more livable environment."—Library Journal

Insiders' Guide to Williamsburg 16th: and Virginia's Historic Triangle (Insiders' Guide Series) ReviewThe Insiders Guide to the historic triangle badly needed this updating, especially in the area of restaurants and shopping; so many have closed and new ones opened.
This is a very satisfactory guide, and unless you really want all the historical minutia that the individual Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown guides will give you this is all you need. The Williamsburg chronology goes up to 2007 and Queen Elizabeth's visit, but other listings are more recent.
This guide does not go into as much detail as its predecessor in describing day trips farther a field, but if you are going even into the Hampton Roads, Newport News area you really need a Virginia guide anyway. With that said it puzzles me that there are listings done for as far away as Virginia Beach, Smithfield and Tangier Island, but yet it leaves out Gloucester, (except for one mention of a daffodil festival), which is just across the river from Yorktown and played a key part in the battle and still has a charming colonial area and restaurants with river views.
A big improvement is the listing are price guides for restaurants and hotels, a change from the last edition. There are telephone numbers, addresses and web sites for the listings. Also appreciated is the honesty in evaluating one of Williamsburg's well known shopping destinations: Williamsburg Pottery Factory and Outlets which has gone downhill in recent years, but some tour operators still include it on their stops.
One thing I wish was made clearer is the distinction between the Yorktown Victory Center and the National Park Center and the same situation at Jamestown. I know many visitors have visited the Victory Center at Yorktown and the Jamestown Settlement instead of the National historic site centers and thought they were at the real setting, which they aren't. There really should be clearer guidance both at the locations and in the guidebooks.
Maps are clear and information on modern attractions such as amusement parks, the arts, military sites retirement, health care and media are given. It's a worthwhile guide for anyone visiting the area.Insiders' Guide to Williamsburg 16th: and Virginia's Historic Triangle (Insiders' Guide Series) Overview

The Architect's Studio Companion: Rules of Thumb for Preliminary Design ReviewThis book is designed to help architects in their design of new buildings. Spedifically, the book is organized about the common building codes in place around the United States. The intent of the book is to minimize the time that an architect need spend on checking building codes themselves so that he can proceed to working on the design of the building.
The book establishes a simple system of seven steps to help the architect in his initial design effort.
The first step is to determine the Building Code and occupancy, then check as to what types of construction are permitted by the code, move on to a preliminary structural design, consider using daylighting, plan for mechanical and electrical systems, determine building code requirements for egress and accessibility, and finally parking.
By having all this informaion at your fingertips a great deal of time can be saved. The Architect's Studio Companion: Rules of Thumb for Preliminary Design OverviewThe architect's favorite handbook-more informative and easier to use than ever! The Architect's Studio Companion is the laborsaving design resource that architects and builders have relied on for years. Parking Structures: Planning, Design, Construction, Maintenance and Repair ReviewI would agree with everything the previous reviewer said about the book with the exception of the last sentences regarding architects and engineers.
