Karen's Kite (Baby-Sitters Little Sister) ReviewSynopsis: The story starts off with seven year old Karen Brewer going to school. At school, Ms. Colman teaches the class about mechanical flying things and tells them that they would take a field trip to the airport. She also brings a guest lecturer Hank and his pet canary Sassy. During their field trip at the airport, Ms. Colman asks the students to select one partner, and Karen chooses Hannie. No one choose Natalie Springer, a shy little girl who sits next to Karen, and Ms. Colman assigns Leslie to be her partner, which Leslie hates because she wants to be partners with Pamela.
After their fun field trip to the airport, later in class, Ms. Colman talks about the mechanics of kites and Mr. Mackey the art teacher, announces that they would be holding a kit flying contest on Friday, and whoever's kites stays up on the sky the longest will win a gift certificate to Mrs. Moody's Kite Store.
Later, Natalie receives the bad news that her grandfather is ill, so her parents ask Karen's mother if Natalie can stay with them. Karen doesn't have a problem with having Natalie stay over, and tries to be as nice as she can to her because of Natalie's situation. But Natalie decides to be a difficult guest to Karen, when she takes a lot of time making a snack for herself instead of playing with Karen and Nancy, commenting on how gross Emily Junior is, getting Karen into trouble by trying to fly themselves by jumping from high planes, and leaving the tub running and overflowing in the bathroom and placing the blame on Karen. Karen gets angry with Natalie, but in school, when she tells her friends about it, they support Natalie instead of Karen. Then the kite flying contest turns into a disaster when Karen's kite pushes Natalie's kite to the ground, making Karen look bad again. Can Karen fix her reputation and be friends with Natalie again?
Review: I really liked reading this book. As someone who is really interested in aviation and the mechanics of flying, I thought this book introduced some good concepts about how birds fly. I also enjoyed the storyline of Natalie and Karen's relationship.
I really disliked Natalie in this book. I know she was going through a hard time with her grandfather's situation, but she could have acted more civil as a guest in their home. I felt that Karen did the right thing be telling Natalie the error of her ways, even if it was a little harsh. Probably the only part of the book that I thought could have been written better was towards the end, when Natalie somewhat figures out that she behaved badly and apologizes to Karen, only because I thought it did not sounds sincere enough.
However, overall I enjoyed reading this story. The illustrations by Susan Tang add really well to the book, and I especially enjoyed the ones where Karen and Nancy are waiting for Natalie to finish her sandwich, where Karen gets angry at Natalie in the bathroom, and when Karen admires Sassy in the classroom.
Overall, this was a fun book to read, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes the series.
Karen's Kite (Baby-Sitters Little Sister) OverviewWhile Ms. Colman's class makes kites for their kite-flying contest, Karen gets into a fight with her best friend, Natalie, and Karen tries to make up with Natalie and win the contest.

The Civil Engineering Handbook, Second Edition (New Directions in Civil Engineering) ReviewThis is an incredible reference book for any civil engineer. The price may appear a bit high but for the amount of information you are getting one could argue it is actually cheap! This is the most inclusive handbook I have ever used. The Civil Engineering Handbook, Second Edition (New Directions in Civil Engineering) OverviewFirst published in 1995, the award-winning Civil Engineering Handbook soon became known as the field's definitive reference. To retain its standing as a complete, authoritative resource, the editors have incorporated into this edition the many changes in techniques, tools, and materials that over the last seven years have found their way into civil engineering research and practice. The Civil Engineering Handbook, Second Edition is more comprehensive than ever. You'll find new, updated, and expanded coverage in every section. In fact, more than 1/3 of the handbook is new or substantially revised. In particular you'll find increased focus on computing reflecting the rapid advances in computer technology that has revolutionized many aspects of civil engineering. You'll use it as a survey of the field, you'll use it to explore a particular subject, but most of all you'll use The Civil Engineering Handbook to answer the problems, questions, and conundrums you encounter in practice.

American Normal: The Hidden World of Asperger Syndrome ReviewAs an adult Aspie, I found Osborne's portrayal of Asperger's Syndrome to be tedious and tendentious. Even though the condition may be somewhat amorphous, there is a clear distinction between Aspies and non-Aspies. The otherness is what defines Asperger's Syndrome. Osborne attempts to raise the question regarding our very conception of normalcy and the long running theme of the book is the idea that perhaps everyone is on the spectrum in some way or another. That is, despite all its weirdness, there is nothing all that abnormal about Asperger's Syndrome. The message is hopeful in that it opens the gates to social acceptance, but I do think that he tends to underplay the severe problems that autistic individuals have in integrating into society.
However often it gets told, the story of the Aspie getting humiliated and then fired from a job, drifting downwards as he claws at any available opportunity, getting fired again, and again, before finally reaching a dead end, is perhaps THE story about Asperger's Syndrome. Geniuses have always been exceptions. Whilst it is heartwarming to think that men like Glenn Gould and Thomas Jefferson may have been autistic too, such trivia provides only a false sense of comfort to the 99.999% of Aspies who do not possess those extreme talents. What hope is there for the Aspie who does not possess the savant like skills in music? How many of us will ever turn out to be like Einstein?
Parts of the book had been published in the New York Times Magazine and as befits anything that is published in that august newspaper, the writing is of a high standard. However, Osborne writes as a man who is a professional writer. It is apparent that he has honed his craft and has learned how to reach for the metaphors and the similes. But the style feels a little too commercial, and the words often a little contrived.
Of the many and growing publications on Asperger's Syndrome, I would say that "American Normal" is perhaps one of the better offerings. Books written by Aspies tend to be wooden and excessively direct. Books written by parents of Aspies are usually too homely and thoughtlessly hopeful. Books written by the researchers are typically too specialized to be of any use to the lay reader. While I do sincerely believe that "American Normal" fails to shed any real insight into the lives and tribulations of an Aspie, it is useful for those who are beginning to apprehend the mysteries of the autistic mind. One should probably not be too critical of those who write of enigmas.American Normal: The Hidden World of Asperger Syndrome Overview

Where There Is No Comfort, Seven Days in Ethiopia ReviewJuliann Troi writes of her work with International Crisis Aid in Ethiopia, helping some of the most desperate people in this world.
She takes the reader through her days there, sharing her experiences and reflections about what she finds, as well as the disturbing disparity between her life in America, and the lives of the human beings she helps. She introduces the man responsible for the project, Pat Bradley, and tells of his story and his remarkable accomplishments there. Running on little more than human love and compassion, he has saved the lives of countless children and helped many more.
Juliann Troi's words are underlined by startling images from her days there, vivid photographs of the people of Ethiopia, current patients, some of the healthy children successfully saved from suffering by the ICA, and the local homes and surroundings.
The sometimes heartrending, sometimes funny human stories she tells brings the reader into a world in which people joyfully smile in spite of suffering that would undo a Westerner.
This unusual and passionate work serves as a reminder to us all of how much we take for granted as privileged residents of the industrialized nations. It is a plea to open our hearts to the suffering of the less fortunate in the world, and a reminder that we do wrong to forget them.
I heartily recommend this book, which provides an amazing window on a seldom-travelled part of our world.
Where There Is No Comfort, Seven Days in Ethiopia OverviewWhen Pat Bradley, president of International Crisis Aid (ICA), asked Juliann Troi to write an article to promote awareness of the life-saving work his nonprofit organization was doing in Ethiopia, Troi realized it couldn't be done from her office; first-hand experience was needed. Knowing that Pat's work focused mostly on life-and-death situations in places where no one could easily go, guaranteed a difficult trip. Gathering her courage, she left her family and comfortable home to embark on a journey that forever changed her and the way she saw the world. Troi spent a week in and around Angacha, a small village south of Ethiopia's capital, bringinghope to a desperate land Where There Is No Comfort. During that time, she helped ICA's team feed the starving, heal the sick, and reach out to young girls recently freed from sex slavery.Troi found that millions of Ethiopians suffer unspeakable hardships, yet exhibit an amazing resilience and strength of character as they struggle to survive. This inspirational snapshot of life in Ethiopia will open your eyes and touch your heart.Juliann Troi lives in Edmond, Oklahoma, where she is president/artisan of Golden Seed Arts and Media, Ltd. Her home-based business allows her to express her creativity through art in all forms, while writing gives wings to her dreams. She hopes that through Where There Is No Comfort, readers will realize that it's never too late to do something unexpected, even extraordinary.Publisher's website: http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/WhereThereIsNoComfort.html

A Sudden Silence ReviewThis book was awesome. As a teenager reading this book it really opened my eyes more to drinking and driving. It is such a terrible thing in our world today and Eve Bunting describes feelings very well. The way she added suspense, trajedy and justice was just great. I think this book is a must read.A Sudden Silence Overview
