The Tower Of Babel: NASA's Great Endeavor ReviewThe Tower of Babel, NASA's Great Endeavor takes the reader on a first-rate adventure into the future of space travel and habitation and explores some technological advances here on earth that will dominate the 21st century. The events and the world the protagonist, Magnus Kolden, experiences are highly believable, relevant, and politic. NASA survives the "Dark Ages" of the early 20th century, with Magnus, "Magic" as his friends call him, at the helm speeding to Mars and beyond. The author strives for realism and goes to great lengths to help us embrace the characters' and our future by interweaving pages of scientific, aeronautical, engineering, mathematical, and medical details into the plot; thereby, propelling us warp speed and with confidence into the future. The characters are well developed and compelling. The mood throughout the book is tense--fraught with uncertainty, assassins, terrorists, political races for power and domination, secret meetings, threats, dangerous characters, natural disasters, and some surprises.
Magnus is a scientific genius, who from an early age has been inquisitive and who has embraced projects that will benefit mankind as a whole; however, at times, he is arrogant, naive, emotionally disciplined to extremes, dismissive of environmental detractors, and thus, is often dangerously short-sighted in his eforts to gain worldwide notoriety for himself and for the United States in a space race that is center stage in this story. He cowardly blames God for setbacks he encounters in his pursuits and even at times, places himself on the same pedestal, a scary thought considering his genius and his involvement in great scientific feats that could possible change the course of history and could have far-reaching consequences. In the end, however, it is John, his berst friend and NASA peer, who grounds and "frees" Magnus.
The story is intriguing and deals with no narrow concerns, but rather with thought-provoking questions that the characters and the reader must ponder. I say, "Kudos" to the author.
