with an optimistic heart. Because in order to accept Goldstein's arguments, we must believe we are capable as people to do things differently---and more successfully---than we have in the past. And, in light of the recent
BP blowout and on-going oil hemorrhage, it is clear that we must do things differently.
The author challenges us to re-imagine energy efficiency as an energy resource. This leap of understanding is

Energy efficiency means delivering an equal level of service--or an improved level of service--to consumers for
less energy expended. The "invisible energy" in the title is precisely the energy not used to produce the desired
services. An example would be the energy technology to illuminate a room with 30 Watts that previously was lighted by 300 Watts. The 270 Watts saved is energy efficiency--a 90% reduction in energy previously expended.
Goldstein shows how energy efficiency can be the foundation for the creation of new industries through technologicalinnovation, producing more jobs, reducing energy costs, creating a new market for consumers, and increasing competitiveness.
