A Conspicuous Quiet ReviewA revealing book about the dicotomy of a family's loving relationship, from mother, father and son, all dictated by the events that take place in the Iraq War, and how each reacts to it consequences. It leaves one to wonder what the 43rd President of the United States was thinking when he acted more like a "King" than a President. After you read the last page, you begin to wonder how many years all Americans will have to pay, not only financially but the mental anguish that so many have to go through when faced with the burdens of the War that only a few in our Heirarchy wanted, and yet thrust upon us so many of the middle and lower class to carry out the saber of War. A GREAT READ. The Threat Matrix: The FBI at War in the Age of Global Terror ReviewI, too, heard the NPR Diane Rehm interview with this author yesterday. I downloaded the sample and immediately started reading it. I just downloaded the book on my Kindle and can hardly put it down! I'm not a fan of nonfiction books, but this reads like a better-than Tom Clancy book. The memories of the Germany-hosted Olympics where the Israeli athletes were mowed down by Palestine terrorists and then the Southern Airlines terror of having to fly back and forth from USA to Cuba are fully described in the early chapters of The Threat Matrix. What an awakening to terror from the "gangsta" days of J.Edgar Hoover!! This book is going to fly off the shelves and into the Kindles when the accolades get out!

The Company We Keep: A Husband-and-Wife True-Life Spy Story Review
Dayna and Robert Baer were in the CIA's clandestine service. The first half of the book is a bunch of spy anecdotes from their work on Hezbollah-related issues from Morocco to Central Asia, mostly in Bosnia and Syria. These are good stories, connected by the common set of policy targets but not really tied together in a narrative. Some seem to be heavily cleaned-up by CIA censors, and (perhaps as a result) the chronology is somewhat jumbled. Still, they're good stories.
They get to know each other on a mission in Bosnia and eventually become a couple. There's enough information about parents, former spouses, and Robert's kids to make clear the personal costs of the CIA life. When they leave the agency, their recognition of those costs drives a number of personal choices, which then become the focus of the book. The transition here is very rough, and doesn't really cohere - - in part because they're living well despite having no apparent career, though Robert in particular has a lot of good connections in shady places.
It all comes together in the third part of the book when they settle down, get married, and decide to adopt a child. At that point the book is no longer a spy story.
Those three different parts make it hard to evaluate the book as a whole and its audience. They both write well, but in eerily similar styles - if I were to read a random page I wouldn't be able to tell whether Robert or Dayna had written it. If you want some rip-roaring spy stories that then coasts into something rather different, it's an enjoyable, fast read.The Company We Keep: A Husband-and-Wife True-Life Spy Story Overview
