California Screaming: A Novel ReviewNot the most sympathetic character you'll ever meet, Kevin embodies all that is glitz and glam about the party boy scene. Materialistic, and not just a little shallow, our hero cuts a wide swath through the gay world of West Hollywood.
By turns truly hilarious and truly sad, Doug Guinan succeeds in winning the reader over, creating characters at once pathetically jaded and ultimately redeemable.

The Secret Keeper: A Dick Hardesty Mystery ReviewThe Dorien Grey series of books are set in a slightly earlier time, in an anonymous large (due to the availability of public transport often referred to)city. The Private Eye genre is approached in a low key, calm manner, that makes the instances investigated realistic. Other gay detectives don't seem to worry about paying the bills, of if a client will pay, which is quite charming and a nice change. The detectives home life issues are also woven into the story in the secret keeper,which revolves around the antics of a spoilt,well to do family.
The whole series slowly builds the charachers and their close friends to a likeable crew you would wish to know. Dicks life develops and changes as the series progresses, and he matures from a bar hopper keen on one nite stands to someone who has to act as a 'grown up' at all times around the small child that becomes part of his family.
I have enjoyed these books, and The Secret Keeper: A Dick Hardesty Mysteryreally recommend the series as a whole, but I should advise you that 'sex, drugs and rock and roll' aspects of gay life are not covered here!!
The Secret Keeper: A Dick Hardesty Mystery Overview
PI Dick Hardesty listens with polite interest to his partner Jonathan's stories of his days working for 90-year-old multimillionaire Clarence Bement, helping the old man tend his garden. But when Bement is found dead, an apparent suicide, Jonathan is adamant that the old man would never have killed himself, a theory also held by Bement's grandson, Mel Fowler.

When Mel hires him to investigate, Dick learns Bement's lawyer also died mysteriously barely a week before Bement. He finds himself immersed in a world of greed and familial dysfunction, searching for a missing new will, and Jonathan becomes the target for someone who believes the old man entrusted him with a secret Jonathan is not aware he has.

The Virgin Billionaire's Wedding ReviewReading the first book, I didn't realize how closely it was related to other movies... but reading this second book was almost a gay version of The Proposal with Sandra Bullock. After the first few scenes, I knew what was coming because I had seen the movie. It was so hard to read. The only difference was that Jase and Luis were in love from the start... but every situation, issue, and even some lines felt right out of the movie. The author could have done so much more to make a funny story out of the Tennessee-New York Luis interacting in Alaska... it could have been great.The Virgin Billionaire's Wedding Overview
