Karen's Kite (Baby-Sitters Little Sister) ReviewSynopsis: The story starts off with seven year old Karen Brewer going to school. At school, Ms. Colman teaches the class about mechanical flying things and tells them that they would take a field trip to the airport. She also brings a guest lecturer Hank and his pet canary Sassy. During their field trip at the airport, Ms. Colman asks the students to select one partner, and Karen chooses Hannie. No one choose Natalie Springer, a shy little girl who sits next to Karen, and Ms. Colman assigns Leslie to be her partner, which Leslie hates because she wants to be partners with Pamela. After their fun field trip to the airport, later in class, Ms. Colman talks about the mechanics of kites and Mr. Mackey the art teacher, announces that they would be holding a kit flying contest on Friday, and whoever's kites stays up on the sky the longest will win a gift certificate to Mrs. Moody's Kite Store.
Later, Natalie receives the bad news that her grandfather is ill, so her parents ask Karen's mother if Natalie can stay with them. Karen doesn't have a problem with having Natalie stay over, and tries to be as nice as she can to her because of Natalie's situation. But Natalie decides to be a difficult guest to Karen, when she takes a lot of time making a snack for herself instead of playing with Karen and Nancy, commenting on how gross Emily Junior is, getting Karen into trouble by trying to fly themselves by jumping from high planes, and leaving the tub running and overflowing in the bathroom and placing the blame on Karen. Karen gets angry with Natalie, but in school, when she tells her friends about it, they support Natalie instead of Karen. Then the kite flying contest turns into a disaster when Karen's kite pushes Natalie's kite to the ground, making Karen look bad again. Can Karen fix her reputation and be friends with Natalie again?
Review: I really liked reading this book. As someone who is really interested in aviation and the mechanics of flying, I thought this book introduced some good concepts about how birds fly. I also enjoyed the storyline of Natalie and Karen's relationship.
I really disliked Natalie in this book. I know she was going through a hard time with her grandfather's situation, but she could have acted more civil as a guest in their home. I felt that Karen did the right thing be telling Natalie the error of her ways, even if it was a little harsh. Probably the only part of the book that I thought could have been written better was towards the end, when Natalie somewhat figures out that she behaved badly and apologizes to Karen, only because I thought it did not sounds sincere enough.
However, overall I enjoyed reading this story. The illustrations by Susan Tang add really well to the book, and I especially enjoyed the ones where Karen and Nancy are waiting for Natalie to finish her sandwich, where Karen gets angry at Natalie in the bathroom, and when Karen admires Sassy in the classroom.
Overall, this was a fun book to read, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes the series.
