Disclaimer: I am his brother. But I also was a technical journal editor for many years, and I am a voracious reader who will not hesitate to stop reading a poorly written book. This book is a true gem. Even though I had seen most of this material before, I simply could not put it down after he sent me a copy. I probably lost 3 hrs of sleep for 4 nights polishing it off! Wow! And the same thing happened to my new wife when she read the book!
I saw most of these chapters before they came out in the book. John would send one a week (in highly decorated envelopes no less!) to my previous wife as she was progressively dying from ALS. We were in stitches reading each of the chapters. It helped her (and me) to ease her passing.
In Lyle, John captures the soul of the klutz that all of us know and are endeared to. And any one of these incidences could be our own. And the devilish imagination behind each vignette is amazing. [Or did each REALLY happen to my slightly klutzy brother? - I doubt it, since many are completely over the top]. The wit is very dry, but it greatly works. And much is so tongue-in-check.
I thought so much of this book that I bought a dozen just to give out to my college colleagues. While I would have come out ahead by just sending brother John a check equal to royalty rather than buying this many, I would have missed hearing everyone chuckle and saying "Hey, I know this guy Lyle!!!?!."
Do yourself a favor (and my brother, a favor in passing) - buy and enjoy this wonderful little collection of humorous vignettes. If you have ever tripped over a trash can or spilt coffee, this book is not only for you -- it might be about you!
