Bloodstone Heart Review3 1/2 Stars
Ms.Tolles latest addition to her Blood Series, Bloodstone, takes us from Oregon to California, to Connecticut. Josh, a friend of Darby's, searches for help against an evil vampire.
Josh Brennan is a loner, a young man with the unusual ability to hear others thoughts, and has to either go out into the night where it is quiet or wear earphones to drown out the noise. One evening Josh bumps into Darby's old friend Melanie, causing her to slip. He grabs her arm and peace along with quiet calms him. Melanie is able to read people through touch, and finds that Josh is able to read people's thoughts. Intrigued in spite of her normal shyness, Melanie allows Josh to walk her home then gives him her phone number.
On the way back to his apartment Josh notices something small glittering at the end of a dark alley. He stops to pick it up. Thoughts from a distraught and evil vampire bombard him, and before Josh realizes it he is attacked and dragged into the alley. A vampire throws Josh onto a wooden pallet but as the vampire falls onto Josh, he cannot avoid the broken piece of wood Josh is holding. The vampire is impaled and dies while Josh runs for the safety of his home. Josh realizes he now will have to deal with the knowledge that vampires are real, but will soon face a future that will bring more vampires and werewolves into his and Melanie's life.
As with the first three books in this series, I have enjoyed this book as well. I will admit there were a few details that caused the flow of the writing to become out of sync. One was some of the characters would say "et al" at the end of their sentences. Maybe this is a local thing? Then there is a reference to a television show from the 70's, Alice, when Melanie goes into a diner named Mel's Place. Since this is a book geared towards Young Adults I don't believe that most will understand this reference. In addition, Josh and Melanie are separated for most of the book after briefly being together. This isn't a big concern but it is part of the plot, making it harder for the reader to believe the "I love you's" between these two characters at the end of this book. There is no real build up of a relationship that would bring them to the realization of love.
Finally, Josh is being chased by another evil vampire, but there is little of this in the book until the last couple of chapters. There is a brief appearance of this new vampire at the beginning of the book, and then in the last few chapters of the book. Several chapters of the book is dialogue, explanation of events of the previous books and travels of Melanie as she acts as a decoy to keep the vampire from going after Josh.
Ms. Tolles ended Bloodstone with a cliff hanger causing me to believe this book is a bridge from her previous Blood books to the next book in this series. I'm glad she is apparently going to bring us another book into the series. Even with the issues I've found, I've enjoyed reading beyond where most books leave off, the daily life after `Happily Ever After'. Ms. Tolles does a wonderful job of showing the gifts that Josh has. If this book had more interaction between the new characters, Josh and Melanie, along with more conflict with the vampire chasing them, it would have been more of a story and not as much of a bridge in this series.

Bloodstone Heart OverviewJosh Brenner is a good looking guy with an extraordinary talent he thinks is a curse - He's telepathic and he can't find the mute button, so he lives in solitude only coming out at night. But Josh isn't the only supernatural out and about this cold March night, because when Josh returns from his midnight run to the store to avoid people, he runs smack into a hungry agitated vampire looking for something and Josh is in his way.??Horrified by what he's seen and barely escaping with his life, he confides in a woman he barely knows, but has an instant connection with. When another vampire shows up looking for the first, Josh and his friend Lanie find themselves running for their lives and head to Oljone, California where a friend of Lanie's from college has helped her with a supernatural problem in the past. ??But when they get to California with the vampire hot on their trail, they find Darby, Lanie's college pal, has moved to Massachusetts in search of her vampire boyfriend Devon. Luckily Darby's sister Rowan and Devon's vampire brother, Blake, step in and help Josh and Lanie as best they can.??The four work together along with Dean (a werewolf) and his girlfriend Sally (a witch) to figure out this crazy mystery. What does this determined vampire want and why? And is he willing to kill for it? As this mystery unfolds, so do other darker mysteries. Will they figure things out in time before someone is killed? You'll just have to read it to see!
